That he is one of the best Crows player of all time but clearly not in the league of the others, last few years hasn't been his best but doesn't discount what he archived before then.

I 100% agree. Its a bit old now this sorry playbook this we like to play when we want to move senior players on years before they expire.

Why jump the increase to $200K+ and make him the highest player on the list, offer him $50-$100K more and a longer contract then and there is news he want to come back home. Rankine and Dawson are the only 2 players who should be at $1M+ and unlikely we will be in a bidding war with Port Power like what happened with Lukosius last year unless they loss a player like Butters who is supposedly only on $800K.
His manager would laugh us out of the room.

Who is uprooting themselves and moving clubs and states for $50k? We'd be ridiculed for suggesting it.

What if the rumours are correct he truly wants home to be with family and friends, money then becomes secondary because wherever he plays he'll be well paid for his services.

neither but both are around the top 10 which is a massive achievement and should be respected.
I'm just curious which player people rank higher.

They've both had quite similar careers in terms of accolades, longevity, contract annoyance, performance in latter years, etc

Sloane for mine.

Rory (Laird) was a very good player, particularly across half back.

Sloane at his best was a better, more important player.

Sloane was the heart and soul of the team. An utterly fearless competitor.
I have him well ahead of Laird who is a good player, but I fear became more of a stat padder in his later career.

I did say $50-100K and it's still $50-100K more than their offer if he does want to return home so he isn't really moving states, over 7 years that will be $350-700K.

I agree but I think you could make a case that Laird has performed at a good level for longer.

From 2015 to 2019 he was a great player in defense and achieved two All Australians and a B&F. Then he performed to a good level in the midfield for a further 3 or 4 years and won two more B&Fs in that role (albeit a much weaker side). Eight top 5 B&F finishes.

Sloane was great in the midfield between 2012 and 2019, AA, two B&Fs and six top 5 B&F finishes. Missed a chunk of 2018 through injury. He did fall off a bit a few years after Dangerfield left.

I would still have Sloane's peak giving him the edge over Laird's consistency

Hopefully St Kilda has another stinky season. North Melbourne too. It will be easier to prise players away if their club is a laughing stock like Carlton were.

We are hopefully on the up but not yet anywhere near the stage where good performances have been pushing up wage demands. And about to lose Tex, Smith and hopefully O'Brien who would all be on decent coin so should have room to make trade plays.

LOL
You've chosen a strange hill to die on.
No, I really like the guy.

I just think we should be realistic about what he'll cost.

$1m+ and two firsts (or a top five pick), with maybe something back.

There's no debate if you just assume you're getting a player for pennies in the dollar. But he won't, so we should discuss it realistically. He'll cost similar to Rankine.

And Lairds contract ends next year too.
Salary shouldn't be a problem.

If we got Goad and NWM there's not too many holes in the list anymore.
