Not to mention, at the back end of his contract, we pumped it up. There is no way the Blues could have offered him the $$ we did.So $100k

Sloane best was better.Looking at the entirety of their career, would you say Rory Sloane or Rory Laird is closer to "best Crows player" status?
I'm just curious which player people rank higher.
They've both had quite similar careers in terms of accolades, longevity, contract annoyance, performance in latter years, etc
Like Smith for instance, we moved him on...no wait, we got him another contract

so its not like we had the depth to force him out. if we delisted him all it would have got us is an extra pick we wouldnt have used.

Absolutely correct. His contested posession % is WAY lower. But it does show what his weapons are!
Yeah its not like an excellent South Australian prospect who plays in a position of desperate need for our team slid into the 50's or anything..
One area we are stacked in is HBF, so stacked someone like Nanks probably won't get a look in.
An extra pick...imagine if we had an extra pick, could have addressed our ruck issue.
when it comes to list management the club had its reasons. They arent idiots its not one guy with a thumb up his arse, there is a whole group that sit there accessing the squad and where to make improvements at the end of every season. Im telling you, this is probably the one area clubs spend more time on than anything else. Its also an imperfect science. But they clearly had their reasons as to why they kept smith on. It can easily be as simple they didnt rate anyone else in the draft other than our first two picks. So build a bridge and get over it.
I think they were painted into a corner - breaking his contract would have cost more than they thought it was worth (or were able to do).when it comes to list management the club had its reasons. And yet Ogilvie mentioned leading up to the draft how deep it was but unfortunately they didn’t have any list spots. Nicks got him to his trigger and the club didn’t have the heart to not go through with it.
One of the deepest drafts quality wise in recent times, more like it was a loyalty thing with Smith having been a very good player and looking on from the outside a very good clubman.when it comes to list management the club had its reasons. Just stating what I see it as looking in from the outside, no way I'd have given Smith another contract unless it was strictly a 1 year deal to nurture our young blokes in the SANFL as a leader with the proviso he would only play AFL if we were desperately short of options.Hodge and Lewis were both good players and clubmen
My understanding is that they didn't have any choice about giving Smith a new contract - it may even have been just a continuation of his previous contract. Once he hit the games trigger there was nothing they could do, other than paying him out - and that wasn't an option due to the money they'd brought forward from future years (allowing us to make offers to ANB, Cumming & Peatling).Just stating what I see it as looking in from the outside, no way I'd have given Smith another contract unless it was strictly a 1 year deal to nurture our young blokes in the SANFL as a leader with the proviso he would only play AFL if we were desperately short of options.
It's clear Brodie has coaching aspirations after he finishes his playing career given his involvement with the SANFL U18's program and the Crows AFLW program. Personally unless he really lights it up I think he plays a lot of SANFL this year.

I’d say their playing ability was quite neck and neck, but if we’re considering where they rank among our greats, there’s two factors that edge Sloane above LairdI agree but I think you could make a case that Laird has performed at a good level for longer.
From 2015 to 2019 he was a great player in defense and achieved two All Australians and a B&F. Then he performed to a good level in the midfield for a further 3 or 4 years and won two more B&Fs in that role (albeit a much weaker side). Eight top 5 B&F finishes.
Sloane was great in the midfield between 2012 and 2019, AA, two B&Fs and six top 5 B&F finishes. Missed a chunk of 2018 through injury. He did fall off a bit a few years after Dangerfield left.
I would still have Sloane's peak giving him the edge over Laird's consistency
If Smith wants to be a coach, make him out sanfl captain & he can be the on field coach.Just stating what I see it as looking in from the outside, no way I'd have given Smith another contract unless it was strictly a 1 year deal to nurture our young blokes in the SANFL as a leader with the proviso he would only play AFL if we were desperately short of options.

Given you think they had clear reasons for keeping Smith, can you list them?
I need a laugh

Hey I acknowledge its hard to understand the reasons, so we shouldnt fight about it. All I am saying is list management is an area they would have sat down and really do their homework. Clearly Smith is wanted for depth. We have a habit of wanting break glass in case of emergency senior players where possible, it seems to be the philosophy of the club. Plus when I talked about the draft, some clubs feel they have enough young players and will seek to build ready to play depth. So sure, there was some talent in the draft but the club felt we didnt need it. Its not a first for any club to overlook talent at the draft.
Plus I imagine some of the thinking from the club was we have had no depth for years so lets maximize it. Is it a good philosophy who knows. They clearly will make their own decisions.
I’d rather notRoo, Nicks and Adam Kelly are the key components of the list management group. Think about that.
