Looking at the entirety of their career, would you say Rory Sloane or Rory Laird is closer to "best Crows player" status?
Sloane best was better.

Laird for longevity.

I'm just curious which player people rank higher.

They've both had quite similar careers in terms of accolades, longevity, contract annoyance, performance in latter years, etc

I think Sloane then Laird as Laird is more your soldier midfielder but Sloaney was your gut running player who really lead the way. Sure he fell away in his later years but in his prime he was definitely one of the biggest stars of our side.

Reckon Laird played at his highest level much longer than Sloane. Sloane’s best was better, or had greater impact, but he really didn’t deliver it for too long.

One area we are stacked in is HBF, so stacked someone like Nanks probably won't get a look in.

An extra pick...imagine if we had an extra pick, could have addressed our ruck issue.

when it comes to list management the club had its reasons. They arent idiots its not one guy with a thumb up his arse, there is a whole group that sit there accessing the squad and where to make improvements at the end of every season. Im telling you, this is probably the one area clubs spend more time on than anything else. Its also an imperfect science. But they clearly had their reasons as to why they kept smith on. It can easily be as simple they didnt rate anyone else in the draft other than our first two picks. So build a bridge and get over it.

Roo, Nicks and Adam Kelly are the key components of the list management group. Think about that.

I think they were painted into a corner - breaking his contract would have cost more than they thought it was worth (or were able to do).

And yet Ogilvie mentioned leading up to the draft how deep it was but unfortunately they didn’t have any list spots. In fact everyone said how deep it was.

Nicks got him to his trigger and the club didn’t have the heart to not go through with it.

He had his manager go public about nearing the trigger and then Smith after he reached it saying how he definitely wanted to go again. No way our weak corporate culture can handle delisting a long serving player in those circumstances. Players like Lynch and Dougie forgot to follow the Thommo game plan, when you do, you remain.

One of the deepest drafts quality wise in recent times, more like it was a loyalty thing with Smith having been a very good player and looking on from the outside a very good clubman.

Hodge and Lewis were both good players and clubmen
Just stating what I see it as looking in from the outside, no way I'd have given Smith another contract unless it was strictly a 1 year deal to nurture our young blokes in the SANFL as a leader with the proviso he would only play AFL if we were desperately short of options.

It's clear Brodie has coaching aspirations after he finishes his playing career given his involvement with the SANFL U18's program and the Crows AFLW program. Personally unless he really lights it up I think he plays a lot of SANFL this year.

My understanding is that they didn't have any choice about giving Smith a new contract - it may even have been just a continuation of his previous contract. Once he hit the games trigger there was nothing they could do, other than paying him out - and that wasn't an option due to the money they'd brought forward from future years (allowing us to make offers to ANB, Cumming & Peatling).

Now, you can argue that they shouldn't have selected him for the game which triggered the contract clause, and I wouldn't disagree - but their hands were tied once that happened.

Given you think they had clear reasons for keeping Smith, can you list them?

I need a laugh

I agree but I think you could make a case that Laird has performed at a good level for longer.

From 2015 to 2019 he was a great player in defense and achieved two All Australians and a B&F. Then he performed to a good level in the midfield for a further 3 or 4 years and won two more B&Fs in that role (albeit a much weaker side). Eight top 5 B&F finishes.

Sloane was great in the midfield between 2012 and 2019, AA, two B&Fs and six top 5 B&F finishes. Missed a chunk of 2018 through injury. He did fall off a bit a few years after Dangerfield left.

I would still have Sloane's peak giving him the edge over Laird's consistency
I’d say their playing ability was quite neck and neck, but if we’re considering where they rank among our greats, there’s two factors that edge Sloane above Laird

  • He’s a far better leader and significant clubman
  • Unfortunately for Laird it’s completely circumstantial, but we were far more competitive as a club through Sloane’s peak. Laird was great 16 and 17 yes, but was mostly a gun during the club’s lowest period.

If Smith wants to be a coach, make him out sanfl captain & he can be the on field coach.

Should only play AFL if we have plenty of players unavailable.

Hey I acknowledge its hard to understand the reasons, so we shouldnt fight about it. All I am saying is list management is an area they would have sat down and really do their homework. Clearly Smith is wanted for depth. We have a habit of wanting break glass in case of emergency senior players where possible, it seems to be the philosophy of the club. Plus when I talked about the draft, some clubs feel they have enough young players and will seek to build ready to play depth. So sure, there was some talent in the draft but the club felt we didnt need it. Its not a first for any club to overlook talent at the draft.

Plus I imagine some of the thinking from the club was we have had no depth for years so lets maximize it. Is it a good philosophy who knows. They clearly will make their own decisions.

The only way we get depth now is to put games into the right players. Smith could have been made our SANFL captain like Wright was.

In the best draft, with the best depth in years, we went in with 2 selections (well one because one was a F/S) because we couldn't act like this was a business and not a social club. We have not succeeded for a long, long time and this was an opportunity to say the club comes first...
