Lol nah, he's being massively underrated. He's a top 3 general defender in the league and has an absolute wand of a right peg. We should be doing everything possible to get him

He's too old to do anything 3-0, we have to be smarter than that. If he had chosen us, maybe, but those whose arms we have to twist to chose us - we shouldn't be overpaying in terms of picks especially when they are 28 next season. 24, sure, but not 28.

Port Adelaide is refusing to deal with Carlton over Dan Houston, with the Power angry at what they perceive to be Blues arrogance in early negotiations.

In talks between the clubs fed through Houston’s management, Carlton has stated it intends to keep its pick 11 for this year’s draft while trading a future first round selection to a third club.

The Blues then want to send that third club’s first rounder to the Power, with uncontracted goal-sneak Matt Owies also raised in Houston trade discussions.

But Port powerbrokers say that is delusional when it comes to a 27-year-old two-time All-Australian who is contracted for three more years.

It’s understood Melbourne was happy to trade to first round picks to secure Houston before the Demons were engulfed in their latest crisis.

Yet the interest in Houston remains strong among rival clubs. Sources said North Melbourne was set to launch a major bid to bring Houston to Arden Street, with Alastair Clarkson playing a typically hands-on role.

Ultimately, Port Adelaide is highly unlikely to sanction Houston’s release for anything other than a strong return given it doesn’t own a first-round pick in one of the best drafts in years.

The fact Port have missed lost out to Adelaide for Isaac Cumming and are set to lose to Collingwood for Harry Perryman also complicates matters.

This isn’t viewed as an Alex Neale-Bullen situation given Houston’s motivation for moving to a Melbourne-based club is largely motivated by a Melbourne-based girlfriend. He has also stated his love for Port Adelaide and his teammates.

But if Houston is steadfast on getting to Carlton given his friendship with Jack Silvagni and working relationship with Michael Voss, there is a lot of work to do.
"Friendship with Jack Silvagni" is a definite red flag.

So they're furious that Carlton haven't offered up their #11, but by all reports we've apparently offered up our future 1st?

Why would PA be furious with Carlton for not offering up their #11 when they have a guaranteed 2025 top 5 pick on the tab-- oh.
My guess is because he's told Port it's only Carlton he want to go to and Carton aren't willing to deal in good faith and we have offered overs if the rumour is correct.

Trading back our pick 2 and getting Houston and another first rounder sounds pretty appealing.

Say we traded pick 2 for Gold Coast’s picks 6 & 12. Sending 12 to Port and taking Armstrong in the draft looks great, but Port probably don’t accept that.

Alternatively we could send the pick 6 to Port and we probably still get Shanahan at pick 12. Do we lose much there? Some even rate Shanahan above Armstrong.

This is all based on Houston actually wanting to come to us though, which I’m still highly sceptical of.

Regardless of the reason for leaving, surely it weakens Port's hand a bit that he wants out.

He's contract for multiple years and it's not a dying family member so no it's the opposite. Port don't need to trade him and shouldn't unless they get overs.

That’s how dumb David Noble was - he let that go ahead. JHF looked like a naked mole rat and it certainly didn’t help the situation.

Yeah, it really has the feel of humiliating punishment

The way I see it, we need to have 3 picks in the next two years top 15.

If one of those goes for Houston we are still taking two picks inside top 15.

Currently have 2 and F1

Have to split 2 and if port want one of our picks this year we play the game of either bringing that F1 into this year and bank on a bounce and try and grab two players to come through together, or we hold and see where we end up. Personally I think we look at trying to get back into this years and have a crack at two blokes together.

Like others have stated put the cash forward for balta next year and don’t overspend draft capital on daniel. We’ve always got 2026 F1 to play with if we want to get back in for next year

Reckon it’s more likely he just stays at port tbh.
Agree, I think it's Port pushing our name in the media and telling Houston management, go get a real deal from Carlton and unless they come to the party he has a choice between staying and going to North.

The only similarity is Port.... they are words apart as players and Polec came to use with a foot that needed to be severely managed

Polec also came to us on the back of a great season at Port. He was one of the highest rated wingman in the comp the year prior to coming to us.

I’m not opposed to Houston, I am just cautious as the club could have massive egg on its face if we give up next years top pick for a half back flanker that doesn’t significantly shift our results.

Yes the draft isn’t perfect, but with the analysis these days you could be potentially giving up a player next year that could drive long term success.

Yes people want wins, but let’s not buy wins at the expense of the future and get back into the mid table black hole that plagued the club before the fall.

Sounds like Houston has no interest in us.

Don't say you weren't all told. We are just a pawn in this one.

Gotta say, it's pretty hilarious the different negotiation styles.

Carlton: Houston speaking to Carlton regularly. Not picking up the phone to Port. Not trading Pick 11.

North: Houston hardly spoken to North. North are offering F1.

A fourth rounder for Darling
A third rounder for Parker
And a top 25 pick for Caleb ****ing Daniels!

These guys will be off the list in 2 years and our 2024 draft class is all but wiped.

The off season is going to be harder on my sanity than the regular season.
If we give up a pick in that range for Caleb Daniel, I’ll just about pack it in…

Reckon it’s more likely he just stays at port tbh.
He's backed himself into a corner a bit. His story thus far is - I want to come back to Melbourne. Club doesn't matter.

If he then chooses Carlton it looks like he want's to not only get back to Melbourne, but also to be at a team that's pushing now. Then sounds like it wasn't just coming back to Melbourne at all.

Either way, I like that we've just gone - here's our F1. You all (Blues, Port and Dan/his management) discuss and we'll be here ready to deal if all parties are happy to. Otherwise we'll move on.

Very different look to a few of our more desperate Hail Mary's at other players over the last decade.

Swans exit meetings today/tomorrow?

Should get Parker and/or konstanty news then

Caleb Daniel is a future 3rd (pick around 40) at most considering his salary
