I just don’t see the club having that much faith in a player that hasn’t played game yet and looks to need a fair bit of development and a player that’s played three times in two years two of those appearances being as the sub. Especially with Adams gone I think the clubs wants a midfielder that can step in if any of our starting mids, especially Mitchell go down. So far Macrae hasn’t shown he can do that and Allan is more chance of playing on flank than in the midfield at AFL level.

I also don’t see Eyre as a need unless we move Frampton to ruck depth.

I think Macrae has done more than enough at VFL level to give confidence he can step up if needed. He built strongly into this season following a disrupted preseason. His issue became a lack of opportunity, not preparedness. Maybe Adams departure changes that dynamic.

I think people are underestimating Hustwaite quite a bit. Not saying I would absolutely take him with one of the 2 SSP spots but he is a lot better than being spruiked

Anyone who has followed the VFL side knows what Hustwaite offers to that team. His 2023 VFL B&F the exclamation mark on his time with us. I doubt anyone is underestimating him by questioning his potential via the SSP.

Jen, which way do you think they'll go with the current train-ons?

I’ve no idea really. It’ll be a tough one. Just depends what they are looking for. It’s still early days. Let’s see how the players fare when all the senior players are back next week
A lot of it is drills atm so hard to get an idea who is impressing. A few of them have shown moments

Maybe we will select a player pre Christmas and one post Christmas? Given there are two openings.

Signing a player in the first SSP period reduces the number of potential train-on players by 2

Not buying it. I don’t see the benefit of playing him ahead of either Fin or Allan. It’s not like he’s a proven ball winner at senior level who can step in and fill the void if Titch goes down.
With Adams gone, we're a midfielder less on the list than last year. We might have liked the balance. If Macrae for example is being earmarked for the 22, we'll be pretty light on depth.

It's not about your level of excitement.
Fly and the coaching staff are just trialling him.
I remember you being an Oleg disliker as well.
Leave it up to fly and Co.
Wait a minute... you mean this forum doesn't get to decide?!?

My post on an opinion based forum is about exactly that. Point me to where I've expressed an opinion on what the coaches think.

Point me to where I ever said I disliked or liked Markov. Your problem is just a plain lack of comprehension. I said his disposal by foot was deplorable. It was, stats supported that. He fixed it, shame some moronic BF posters can't discern the difference. I'll leave it there as yet again you prove you're not worth my time.

How about we let them press their claims at training, and see how they go in the trial matches.

They know what the deal is.

The deadline is mid feb. think it’s before practice games begin. So may have to rely on match sim

I don’t think we’d have two midfielders training on if the club was confident on our current group of reserve midfielders stepping up at AFL level.
Or we want depth knowing that we’ll have retirements and bodies are slowing down. Chances are we have two to compete for one spot.

I think you're right. I have found this photo of a man playing the harmonica who could be my father.

We do look similar as you can see below

Are we though? Or have we just opened opportunity at senior level for those who weren't getting that midfield opportunity? Lipinski, Macrae, McInnes, Allan, Harrison or Carmichael for example. Even McCreery's potential to progress into more midfield time. We've also added HDM who is listed as a midfielder, even if he takes time.

Even harder if you're not AFL quality
Same argument could have been made with Checkers and a number of others who were overlooked in their teens but came into the AFL system and flourished.

He has put together a couple of strong seasons in the VFL. He may not get on the list, and ultimately may not make it if he does get on, but to just right him off now is premature.

Yes we are. Demattia is likely to play a Bianco role. No one for Adams. It's one less mid on the list at this stage. 2 really, as Draper was supposedly a mid, but I'm only mentioning AFL relevant ones as it's about us having less depth in the positions.

I think he’s done enough to put him in the frame but you wouldn’t want him as your only inside depth.

Yeah sure lmao. His disposal is crap blah blah blah.
Admit it. No idea at all.

And you are worth my time? Sheesh. TF for that.

So many opinions on players that many I suspect knew nothing or very little about a couple of days ago.

So many opinions about who should get a spot after two relatively meaningless training sessions with half the squad.

How about we wait until we have a solid block of training in the new year, and perhaps the odd scratch match, before we start beating each other up about which players are or are not worthy of the last few spots on the list.

Otherwise it is going to be a very long and tedious preseason. Thank Christ we won the flag.

Like Nick Daicos you mean who took all of a season and half to transition into the senior midfield? Like McInnes who played predominantly as a forward at VFL level and in all his senior apprearances? Like Allan who started his VFL on a wing before moving into the guts?

Draper was I think recruited as a potential mid but he rarely got midfield rotations over his time with us as I recall it. Played mostly off HB as I recall it. Close as he generally got to starting centre square was a wing this year.

Adams was playing predominantly as a forward throughout 2023 though. Just saying.

Trying to think it was this year or last, but after they got him fit, in the 2nd half after half time, he would get some centre bounce rotations and be played as a mid, and looked good. Just moments where he had something. Just a shame it wasn't more consistently.

I’d say Schultz replaces Adams. I’m not sure how this changes anything for Macrae‘s selection.
Don’t get me wrong, I really want to see Macrae be given a real crack to play as a midfielder, just not sure how he slips in/ who he displaces in the starting 22 just yet.

McCrae has to just force his way in or make it count when an opportunity arises.

If he’s good enough, he’ll get his chance
