More likely to work in high pressure games in fact imo. Get the ball to ground inside 50 and take marking interceptors out of the game. Then let your small forwards get to work and dominate. It’s no coincidence that it’s uncommon for talk forwards to kick big bags of goals in grand finals. Often small forwards and goal-kicking mids do the damage. High pressure with taps and knock-ons and ground ball gets that lead to goals are more the norm
The value of Talls is winning games to get into finals - agree they have less influence in finals. But you won’t get there without them.

Structure won us the flag ie adding a like for like with Frampton replacing McStay.
Going small wouldn’t have negated Andrews.
I don't think anyone is suggesting that another tall isn't required down there to replace Dan & help Checkers & consequently bring the ball to ground for our smalls. It's just that we need not rely on that tall to get our goals. Our smalls can do that.

So yeah, it's definitely required for structure.

So the dilemma now is can Johnson be the KF. Vastly different style of fwd compared to McStay.

Guess we'll find out, have no doubt the mc have spoken to Ash and the squad about it or will if they haven't.

What the strategy will be should be fascinating.
Definitely AJ's time to shine & make the most of this opportunity. Big positive is that he's come back super fit & strong.

I was thinking more along the lines of kicking the ball into open space rather than to pack contests and letting the mosquito fleet get to work
Kpf's are a thing of the past somewhat. Nowadays it's the mobile forwards. We are pretty well set up in this regard.

I mean that the club specifically chose Dan because we didn't want a completely dominant forward. We wanted a player to provide a contest. We can do that through Frampton, Cox, Cameron, freddy and Steene if it really concerns you about our lack of height. We went with Frampton to curb Andrews, very different to what you're suggesting. I would love McStay in the side next year but I seriously doubt we can't win the flag without him

We "chose" Dan because he was the only KPP on the market and within our price range.

Frampton is a shocking forward. Krueger is not giving you any aerial contests. Steene is a VFL kid. Cameron massively struggled in the forward line... Cox sometimes gives contests, sometimes he's non existent.

It's going to be a massive issue in 2024, Fly will have his work cut out.

There aren't any KF currently in the competition that take heaps of contested marks in pack situations. The best ones are leading forwards. In a fast moving game style like ours, we don't really need a KF who's a certain height. We have 2 really good lead up forwards in Johnson and Reef. I still think that this will play in our favour. We will be even more unpredictable and versatile next year, while we pick off all the other teams Key Forwards because they will be so predictable, a bit like this year.
We just need talls to provide a contest when the defence is set. It's flipped in terms of skillset. You want classy kpds who mark it consistently and grunt kpfs who bring it to ground and take an occasional clunk.

Nah. They don't star in finals, but they're more important because there's more kicks to a contest. They matter in terms of providing a contest and bringing it to ground.

Hey Jen, which one of Hustwaite and Bytel do you think the Pies will take? Either of them impressing in match sim?
Its really hard to tell, given the match sim is barely that given the small amount of players. But I've seen more of Hustwaite in the match sim than Bytel (who seems to be playing forward- not one of the starting mids that I could see)
Once the seniors are back on Monday, we may get a better idea

Glass half full. I love your work.

Yeah, you'd think we'll need to be a bit patient.
Or at least not expect answers in week one!

(You're so tactful, Jen).

Dan only played 14 games in 2023, and whilst he was good, we still found a way to win the flag without him.

Obviously it would be better to have Dan. But with him going down so early, the coaches have plenty of time to work on strategy. Personally, I think this represents a tremendous opportunity for Johnson. He could be the big improver.
