So you have just decided that we are not ready to contend now?

After making a prelim without our best player, and a young improving list?

Good on you.
The point of the argument is-

What were our off season goals list wise.

Just admit it hasn't gone to plan.
Not every thing has to be yes we won.

We could still have picked up a couple of players yesterday. If we have great.
We'll still be hitting every gun mid next off season for a reason.

I already have may times.
Not try and trade for the Bombers captain. Was a terrible idea. They were just never going to do it.
Ok, not trade for merrett. Even though we needed to improve our midfield and he offered himself to us.

Then who were we meant to go after? What would you have offered?

Going into this off season desperate for gun mids and coming out with none is a fail no matter how we spin it.

IF Nairn and Schubert turn out to be gun players then our 2025 off season can be salvaged from the ashes. (I'm optimistic they could be in time)

If they don't and Sharp is then it gets even worse.

Sorry, but that's just facts.
I think you may lack understanding in what a FACT actually is.

This is nothing but a rant, that’s a FACT.

I didn't watch Sharp but guess what?

We had that pick in our hand at one point.
FACT
I love that opinions have gone and been replaced by everyone’s facts! I have one can I play???
We had pick 10 at the start of the year because Hawthorn is 10th alphabetically and we ended up with pick 10 at the start of the draft so our season was pointless from a draft perspective. FACT.😂

What I find intriguing re Sharp is how even the Dees overlooked him after just losing Petracca and Oliver 🤔

Taylor dropping to their pick was too good to be true for them. But Pickett was an interesting choice.

I suppose their midfield unit will be built around Kozzie, Langford, Rivers and Lindsay, with Viney helping out.

Yeh I find this quite interesting actually.

And Essendon didn't even pick him with their first two picks.

A few clubs having multiple looks at this kid and saying no, or not yet, including the club that drafted him.

FACT

I think Richmond (Grlj), Essendon (Farrow and not matching on Sweid) and the Dees (Pickett) all showed that the whole thing was completely unpredictable.

There was no way we could reasonably assume Sharp was going to last to our pick leading into the draft.

The club were gutted we didn’t land Merrett or an A Grade mid this off season. That is true, it was absolutely the priority. But nothing has changed in the past month regarding this fact and it has nothing to do with what we did or didn’t do in the draft so not sure why you whinging bout it now.

I think they knew Melbourne didn’t want Sharp and were interested in Farrow so it made sense to leave him until pick 9.
What ever way you look at it, moving from pick 9 to pick 10 reduced the players we wanted being available, which most likely was always going to be the case.. That wasn’t the smartest trade ever made but MM did some great work last night.. I’ve said before, draft night is the night MM works his magic..

Not bringing in a gun midfielder was a failure on the club's part - there's no denying it, regardless of what the staunchest posters will claim.

But we were still going to be relying on Mackenzie, Butler and Ward to take another large step in their development anyway - so we might as well throw them the keys and make the most of the situation.

IF Day is able to spend some time in the middle, and the young midfield group all develop, then it's not the worst result given we've snagged 2x F2 and 2x young high-upside talents. In fact it's a great result IMO. The only question is can this midfield take us to a flag - as Brisbane and GCS's is simply overloaded with talent.

On a side note - interesting that Essendon drafted three midfielders (Farrow may take time to move into the middle), all the while having Zerrett, Parish, Caldwell, Durham, Martin (inj), McGrath and Tsatas on the list. I can see Zerrett and Parish being given alternative roles if Sharp and Robey are ready to play early.

Melbourne were never going to select Sharp in a long term midfield that already includes Langford. Difficult to play them together at the same CBA.

It pains me to say but the Dons played it very well. If it were a different team between their 2nd and 3rd picks such as the Hawks I suspect they would have taken Sharp then Robey and left Farrow on the board then taken whoever was left of him and XT.

They were no doubt concerned that another team like Adelaide would try to trade for Sharp, which they did and were lucky Melbourne held firm.

Jeez glad we didn't select Xavier Taylor. Just said he got rinsed at Crown last night on SEN.

Edit: Okay apparently that means losing money. I didn't think I was that old.
I hadn't heard it either, but I assumed it meant losing lots of money...

What did you think it was? Drugs or alcohol?

Moving from Pick 9 to Pick 10 also got us Pick 22 (another 1st round selection) because Essendon wanted three first round picks for Merrett. At the time of the trade it was a smart trade. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Midfield is the last area they need more depth it's probably their strongest area. They didn't go after someone like Schubert because they believe Archer May and the other young key talls that played this year will develop further. They may even be going past guys like Parish.

The best thing to do as a supporter is just to move on. Didn't agree with the choices? Too bad, can't go back and make different ones - best thing to do is support the choices we did make and wish the best for the players we picked.

Dwelling on failures or missed picks or whatever else doesn't give you any success.

I feel better today (I was so confused yesterday), a mate of mine is involved in football development at Central District, and he feels we couldn't have selected two better lads. I've been reading posts that they would be trade bait to secure Butters, but as much as I'd love to have Butters, I'd be very disappointed if that were the case. Let's hope they are both a vital part of future Hawthorn success.
