We still get our academy boys this year and have plenty of time to ensure we do over the next couple of years.

But sure, "mortgaged the next three years" certainly sounds a lot more damning than that.
This is serious. I am not being flippant.

Swans have basically flipped the coin. All in.

No regard to the ongoing health of the club. Just short termism.

Hope we can redeem ourselves.
The ramifications of the 2022 and 2024 GF are still felt to this day aye... in the back of the minds a select few had to go, you just felt it was a matter of time. The papers were stamped today, regardless of cost.

You can argue that making the GF is hard and it is, but how they lost left a big bitter taste in peoples mouths

I like positive players.

I think Hayward has been way underrated. He is a brilliant medium forward, very skilled, a great mark and crumber, very intelligent and very crafty. We do not have a like for like replacement. What he means to the culture of the club is also underrated.

I find it hard to imagine that Charlie is going to generate the same level of passion and excitement after scoring a goal as Wilbur did

Sad to see Will go but have you watched Charlie kick a goal for Carlton before?

Yah... any of them a key defender and ready to play now? No... then we're screwed

That’s why we got Serong and Carmichael should play very early by the way. Kyle could too. Not as convinced on King as most

God I wish people would stop saying this (even in jest).

How about we bring in recruiters to actually address the issue.
For too long our recruiting/list management has been rubbish, no sign it's changing.

For example if we pick Shanahan in last year's draft and see his development in 2025 would we be giving up Hayward and 3 Firsts for Curnow (and later picks)?

We have mortgaged our future on a 29 KPF with a long well paid contract.

Massive mistake IMO.
I agree with what you're saying, the club do need to get someone in that can draft. But we have no control over that, so until then, humor is how I deal with it.

A bit OTT

Hayward and florent arent going to win us a flag

They disappear at best of times

Florent couldnt get a game this year and its not like we missed him that much

We looked pretty good in 2022 when hayward was out in the 2s

Everyone that wants us to keep the first rounders - when do you want us to contend? In 5 years when Heeney retires?

We arent winning shit with just Amartey and McDonald

My source was right in the end 😅 no WA players in discussions, unexpected player floated (Rowbottom), Swans being confident on getting Curnow all along, recently contracted players being in discussions (contracts signed just last year) and GC never really being interested.

Can add a few more things now.

  • We had chats with Petracca's management, but were priced out.
  • Never spoke with anyone in regards to Oliver
  • Did speak with WCE about trading down for an earlier pick, but got priced out.
  • We spoke with many players in the landscape (mostly defenders/ dynamic forwards), were confident on our midfield for next year. (Apparently this is common for clubs, but we were very proactive this year).

What am I missing? Most people seemed comfortable with Pick 11, 2026 1st, and Hayward for Curnow and pick 42.

In addition to this we do a slide of our 2027 1st to Carlton's 2027 2nd and get pick 31 this year too. It guarantees we can get our academy kids. Now everyone is throwing the toys out of the cot?

tl;dr

Worth taking a genuine crack at a premiership as opposed to a) sitting in the middle of the pack with no realistic path to premiership contention or b) going further down the ladder and being 5+ years away from premiership contention.

My 2c on the overall trade period and strategy.

I'm of the belief that there's not really much point being in the middle of the competition, in purgatory and nowhere near realistic premiership contention. The question always has to be what's the most realistic route to a premiership. It's clear that even if you are glass half-empty on the list, it would still be too good to finish in the bottom 4/6 next season to allow us rebuild the list with top draft picks. So to do nothing (if you accept that the list was not good enough to contend next season) would be to consign us to another finish in the 6-12 range. With the looming potential of Warner leaving and Heeney/Grundy getting old (for a team reliant on its' stars) that could leave us closer to bottoming out right as Tasmania enter the competition, which would frankly be a disaster.

So that leaves the option of accelerating our bottoming out by trading out players with currency now, and trying to amass a lot more draft picks in the next two seasons. It probably means not re-signing Warner and maximising his value now with a trade. Perhaps it means the likes of Hayward and Florent are traded regardless. All in all, I'm not sure the last two seasons could justify such an approach. Melbourne took about 3 years before they gave up on their list and opted to reset. Perhaps that was one year too late, but I still don't think we are there.

The flip side, if you take a glass half-full view on the list (which is where I sit) - this is a team that has the majority of its best players in their prime or about to enter it in the next two seasons. Two grand finals in the last four seasons. Clearly they took a step back last year, which is probably accounted for by a combination of (i) a new coach, (ii) injuries to key personnel, (iii) lack of talent in key positions (KPF/KPD) and (iv) the mental impact of two GF beltings. I think there's strong reason to believe that we can improve or have addressed all of these issues in the off-season.

The aggressive, win-now approach that has been taken I think is a reasonably calculated gamble. You can never guarantee yourself a premiership with any move, too many moving parts. But for 2026/27, it's unlikely that any of our first round picks would contribute in a meaningful sense. Whereas Charlie Curnow has the potential to kick 120+ goals over the next two seasons, and make life easier for the rest of our players in the forward half. Of course he has to go out and do it, but I think the potential upside of the move makes it justifiable.

There’s also “first” rounders and there’s whatever this year is. Then we hopefully bounce back and it’s a top 4-6 finish that’s pick 16 plus. The third first is just a pick slide

People are reacting to 2027 1st without considering that it's highly likely with Tassie's picks that that's a pick in the 20s at the earliest, possibly late 20s / early 30s after FA compensation.

How do they help the KPD position? Not the height, strength or skill set. Did you read my post?

We have enough defenders confident Andrews or Snell could play early

Carlton rep said, they feel they got three firsts and another one in Hayward. That annoyed me because if that was their take, the previous deal would have been "3 firsts" oner being Hayward for Curnow and a 2nd rounder.

Admittedly as well bedford was confident on Curnow the entire time in the thread and knew a different player manager.
