This seems like a very "hindsight is 20/20" take. We needed a midfielder with Smith's traits far more than another HB which was probably the area where we had the most depth in the team. Newman getting injured and then Jagga doing an ACL can't be used as the reason why we should have got Houston instead.
we took it for long-term approach

If rumours are true that Curnow is out for 6 to 10 weeks, we should have selected Mcmahon. Last week Kemp and Jsos the other forwards didn't play. Lemmey is not near it. Will we play Okeefe?
Don't think we need to. How many clubs genuinely play with 2 big key forwards? Give H the forward line and surround him with our smalls.

Parade College, have won the Herald sun shield comp in the senior and Junior boys consistently the last 5 years

We (I'm a proud Old Paradian) have always won/done well in the ACC and HS shield comps. Sadly, we lost a few good ones when the like of PEGS offered scholarships (Cotchin). Its ridiculous that we don't do more with Parade (old Collingwood area), especially seeing that Melbourne City (Man. City) have tipped in money for upgrading facilities and player pathways, strong area!

Sad Baby GIF

Silver lining team wise is there's opportunity for the other young guys to try and get there way into that spot. Lord, Binns (a winger, but a spot in the team is available and it doesn't have to be a midfielder), one of the Camp boys, Moir.

There's more opportunity now for someone else to put their hand up as the point of difference amongst the group.

If McMahon didn’t impress during the train on period with our club, what makes you think he would during the AFL season proper?

Exactly. Why pick up a bloke that may be the 6th option in his position? Especially when he hasn’t impressed at all

You are spot on. I mean, the Lions lost a key half back flanker to an acl and replaced him with a veteran who became an All Australian. Then they lost a mid sized tall forward to an ACL and unearthed a young key position forward in his first year on the list. And they also lost a defender to an ACL who can play small and tall and rejigged things around so the remaining guys could cover. There was even enough space to bring in a small forward who had been on the list for some time without having made a real impact who then went and starred as the season unfolded.

We have the pieces on our list to be able to fill the gaps.

My mates kids go there, he says most of the side plays for Northern Knights, they have a strong basketball program too, there is a African kid playing basketball there that the Knights had been trying to get across but he is going to America to play college basketball.

We don’t really have any KPP’s in the seconds who can step up.

There is no perfect formula, but there needs to be a better balance

SOS was more risk reward types, which is hit and miss, also was poor with later picks, when there was obvious no brainers late in the draft.

Austin has been generally been more conservative, but also trying to rectify some previous poor decisions

I have no doubt Austin will pivot, but the timing has to be now
Austin also benefiting from some of the home runs of SOS. SOS may not have been perfect but he built the list from nowhere to competitive. He cops it in the neck alot around here.

Austin is OK but needs to be bolder.

This is rubbish. SOS nailed about 5 picks in 5 years. It has only been since getting rid of a lot of the high picks SOS brought in that we’ve gotten better. As well as our investment in and nailing of SSP and MSD players over the last 3 or 4 years

They've had a more balanced approach to drafting, trades and list composition.

We have lots of depth at one position because of all the picks that have gone into small forwards.

When one third of our list are small forwards, depth at other positions is compromised.

Maybe one of the reasons that we didn't take him is that those rumours aren't true?

I would ask whether we are currently trying to cover a KPP? Yes… there is Charlie. But plenty of other sides make do with essentially one key forward.

On the Brisbane example, they lost a midrange tall (McCarthy) and covered him with a KPP. So it wasn’t a like for like, but they fashioned a way to make it work.

Just because we’ve lost a type of player doesn’t mean the coverage has to come from a similar type. The good clubs can make do.

I'm pretty confident that our playing group is a lot more resilient than a lot of posters on here and are looking forward to getting the season underway knowing that we have a strong list and can do some damage

Clearly losing Jagga was a major gut punch but we'll cover a first year kid. Might give more opportunities to Elijah on ball (which will give Moir opportunities) Cooper Lord or Ben Campo when he's back.

We've got this. Any team that runs out behind Crippa will play with pride and passion.
