Just saw news on Walsh let’s hope they manage this star properly sick of them Rushing players back just cause they want to play it’s not in anyone’s best interest especially not the player get them 110 % then integrated them back gradually

I’m more than happy to see if wright can steady this ship and put us back to being a dominant respected club like he did at the other 2 clubs whether he believes he should be here or not
I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of us supporters not happy with some moves but hopefully their the right ones
I don’t want to be waiting another 20 yrs waiting to be respected

If there is no chance of making the finals in 6 weeks, then it would make sense to put Walsh in cotton wool til the start of the preseason.

So you don't think it a concern that across 15 years, every single player drafted by Carlton has either been good enough to win an All Australian, or played less than 100 games for the club (well, 107 if you count Fisher)?

And that even if you add in reasonably large number of players that we traded for aged under 22, you can only add one more player (Plowman) to the list of 100+ game players.

Who are the players who will 'no doubt' end up reaching that mark? De Koning will get to exactly 100 if he plays every game this year and will then likely leave. Beyond that we currently have:
  • Cottrell (68 games) = 50/50 to get to 100, and I'd be surprised if he got to 150
  • Ollie Hollands (54 games) = will probably get there

I think pretty clear evidence that we have a real issue in developing role players. I don't know whether that comes back to drafting players, or development once they get here, or whether we just don't value those types of player enough (ie: we let Kennedy, Stocker, Fisher, SPS all go) but it seems a real concern to me. Either players show enough to become stars, or they give us a few years at best, but never settle into providing us long term stability.

It has a real impact on list management as well, because instead of drafting and developing our own core of good role players (a la Geelong), we have had to rely on getting B graders from other clubs, at higher cost (both in draft capital and salary cap) - players like Williams, McGovern, Martin, etc. We've had more success in recent years with Newman, Hewett, Acres but it's still a harder road than that taken by the successful teams.

Let’s remember he was touted as a generational talent and he showed it early but then ? Injury cartonised overplayed nit managed correctly I don’t know
This is just my opinion of what I have observed by his body language and the constant barrage of crap everyone keeps banging on about his body .
I think it’s 50/50 mental and body
Thats why I think he’d explode elsewhere to our detriment

Daniher injury problems started when the fitness boss left Essendon. Surprise surprise guess who was at Brisbane and got his body right again?

This was clearly an issue for a while, but hard to say if it still is.

Certainly since Austin has come in, both our recruitment and development has improved. A criteria like 150 takes 8-10 years in the system to reach. Since Austin has come in, Hollands is the only top 15 pick we've recruited, and he looks every bit a 150 gamer.

Our picks in the late 20s, early 30s have actually done quite well against their peers. Pick 30 would be at best a 1 in 3 chance of making it at the level. Motlop and Cowan, injury permitting, should play 100+ games. Binns is unlikely but has an opportunity to prove himself with Walsh out and Lord into the middle. Lord looks to have firmly entrenched himself in the best 22. A few later selections like Carroll, HOK have shown a heap of promise.

We're probably 2-3 seasons away from assessing whether the changes we've put in place are actually working, but signs are pointing in the right direction.

Yes our issue is we can only develop All Australians... 🤔

JSOS, Cowan, Lord, Ollie, Elijah, Cottrell, Cincotta, Durdin, Fogarty, TDK, Kemp and Boyd will all no doubt reach 100 games for us if they aren't traded for, ruined by injury or get themselves into trouble. All AFL quality players despite us not being able to develop players.

I heard we looked at him but deemed he would just be too hard to get across the line. That plus he doesn't fit our preferred player criteria. He's got too much heart and mongrel, he works too hard and can play too many roles.

I don't think we are a mile off it but definitely need to increase the quality of our outside runners and small forwards....with a bit of imagination (and good development) we could look something like this (as a starting base) in 2027:

Lachie Cowan - Jacob Weitering - Jack Silvagni
Josh Lindsay - Harry O'Farrell - Oliver Florent
Sam Walsh - Adam Cerra - Jagga Smith
Cody Walker - Charlie Curnow - Flynn Young
Jesse Motlop - Hudson O'Keefe - Corey Durdin

Reilly O'Brien* - Patrick Cripps - Miles Bergman

Cooper Lord - Ollie Hollands - Harry Dean - Billy Wilson - Brodie Kemp

Of course it is. We have about half a dozen 'stars' who either have chronic injury concerns or who are dispirited and choose when to show up. The bulk of the rest seem to have been chosen as kind of 'auxiliary' who have few tricks but won't ask too many questions.

We need a shake up and all people can do on this thread is talk about which 'near thing' we can poach from another club and how long a player such as Cottrell's contract should be.

Cincotta has played 36 games and turns 29 this year... He might have 3 more full seasons uninterrupted but that's unlikely.

Elijah... who knows with him...

Ollie looks a lock.

Cottrell... well that caveat about being ruined by injury... it's likely he will get to 100 but he's never played 20+ games in a season.

Fogarty will probably be delisted or thrown in a steak knives trade.

Durdin is in his fifth season and still in and out of the side despite how poor our small forward talent is. If he gets there, it's not because of how good a footballer he is, rather, he gets picked because we haven't got enough talent with our small forwards.

TDK won't be traded, unlikely to be ruined by injury or 'get himself into trouble'... he'll be gone as a FA...

Kemp 49 games in 6 years... his games tally has already been ruined by injury, he might still get there.

Cowan should get there, although it is worrying how injury prone he is already... Tassie might also come calling for him...

JSOS already has 125 games under his belt...

Lord is likely to get there. Boyd is too but he still isn't a lock these days to be selected which is worrying for him...

So, there is def doubt with some of them...
 
Hypothetically, if we have a top 10 compo pick, which small would you consider trading that pick for?

I’d love to go after Weightman or Lohman

Scenario 1: TDK accepts stupid money from St Kilda (ie. TDK's decision is financially motivated)
- 1.a - Carlton elect not to match, get Band 1 compensation.
- 1.b - Carlton elect to match, TDK elects to stay (given he's still getting stupid money), TDK remains a Carlton player and our salary cap is munted.
- 1.c - Carlton elect to match, TDK elects to leave, a trade has to be negotiated (if no agreement reached, TDK's call on either revert to 1.b or nominate for the draft).

Scenario 2: TDK accepts a moderate deal from Geelong (ie. TDK's decision is lifestyle- or success-motivated)
- 2.a - Carlton elect not to match, probably still get Band 1 compensation.
- 2.b - Carlton elect to match, TDK likely still wants to leave (given his decision was not financially-motivated), Geelong still want him, a trade has to be negotiated (if no agreement reached, TDK's call on either staying or nominate for the draft).

Scenario 3: TDK accepts Carlton's offer (ie. TDK's decision is loyalty-motivated)
- 3.a - TDK remains a Carlton player.

Your guess is as good as mine as to which way it goes, but those are the various ways it potentially plays out.

Callum Ah Chee is uncontracted, wouldn’t need a top 10 pick and adds heaps to our list.. keep pick 10 and draft Noah Hibbins Heargreaves

When a club matches, I thought player was obliged to stay (under restricted free agency rules).

We need a dangerous, attacking small forward.

We need a medium tall marking forward like an Ah Chee, Fritsch type who are strong in the air but also good on the lead. X-factor type.

We need a half back with a weapon of a kick to set up play.

If we can prioritise these three list holes and have a relatively healthy run, then the team is still more than good enough to challenge.

As much as we need those...

The midfield mix should be prioritised...

Once we lose TDK and have to rely on Pitto, 31 yr old Cripps and Hewett... we are really going to struggle big time...

Don't we have Cerra, Walsh, E.Hollands, Smith and Lord on top of Cripps/Hewett? Have the Camporeale's developing with Ben the inside mid long term replacement for Cripps/Hewett. And then Walker hopefully joining the club the following year as a father-son. I'm all for adding another midfield option but think you are leaving out quite a few names there.

On a relatively small body of work, Hibbins-Hargreaves certainly looks a top prospect, wouldn’t be against that. Would probably prefer Lindsay, but likely gone before our pick.

Some on here would be amazed what the right two draftees or trades would add to us (game plan dependent)
