What's funny about what many (not all) on the port board are saying is that nobody else agrees with them. The consensus in the media is Nas is worth a lot. Hutchy saying Butters wouldn't be enough is just one example.

No logic or intellect applied whatsoever to most of the drivel posted in their Nas thread.

The consensus is Nas is now one of the best, and therefore most valuable players in the comp. Nobody else is arguing that.

You are so undervaluing Whitlock right now.

I like Georgiadies but he's not a magnet mover with what we already have. No point upgrading a Sharman type from a B- to a B+ if our ball movement completely drops away due to losing our midfield/half back star.

Bergman was very average after signing his extension. Went from an exciting proposition to very meh quickly. We'd probably consider him but I wouldnt want to be building the deal around him.
He’d need to be steak knives

Yes Nas has hit his straps this year and we all want him to sign, but that list above is full of talent AND tenacity. We drafted them, they’re all young and couldn’t give 2 shits about how unsuccessful our history is. They want to win and I’m of no doubt they will.

Ive been through all the stages of grief about nas without even knowing if he’s leaving for sure but if he does I’ve come to realise that I’ll still be pumped to see that squad roll out and develop.

Jeez imagine being any other player at the saints right now, yeah cheers everyone for noticing our effort over the last year screw us right.

We’ll be more than fine, even if we take hinterland drive of the rebuild rather than the highway we’ll arrive at the destination.

Doom and gloom about the future is getting so old, I’m excited no matter what the outcome of this heinous saga is. Good luck to him and good luck to us.

For the sake of discussion

You could say the same about how St Kilda fans are trying to play down Butters value recently too.

Let's not kid ourselves, Butters has been one of the best players in the competition for the past 3 years.

How do you rationalise that he is suddenly worth so much less than Nas?

In my opinion, nas and Butters are now at very comparable trade values. They are both probably top 5-10 players in the comp. So you're really spliting hairs at this point.

The only thing that gives Butters slightly more value is that he's in contract, and he has displayed he can play at this elite level for a few years now

As for the post above that claimed Nas is worth 2x Butters.. I simply have no words

I'm not interested in what you think. That's the point. I'm talking about the general consensus out there vs what the majority of posters on your board are saying. I'm not saying Butters isn't a very good player, but right now, ask most people who they'd take... Nas or Butters. The consensus in the media seems to be Nas is worth at least as much as Butters, yet your board laughs it off like it's a ludicrous proposition. It's ridiculous.

It's bizarre as well especially if Butters seeks a trade back to Vic, which is seeming likely, in the year before he is a restricted free agent.

Obviously if Butters refuses to go to us or another Victorian club, he can't be forced to considering he is under contract. But I mean if he goes to us or another Victorian, it will be your main avenue to do a deal with us.

There is also nothing stopping us going to Adelaide and seeking a better deal if Nas seeks a trade. All he wants to apparently do is get back to SA, not specifically Port. If we say to him the only way we can get you to SA is via Crows, because they are offering us a better deal, I doubt he will risk the PSD etc.

Yeah it's a fair point but seeing as there's no way Butters is coming to Moorabbin, not sure it's really super relevant

I think the trade (if it were to eventuate) could see a team like Hawthorn/WB paying a high cost to get Butters now.

Those picks would go to you, and Nas to us

Still a lot of water under the bridge at this point though. For all we know clubs might not pay up for Butters this year, knowing they could get him as a free agent next year, with only salary cap instead of picks

Yeah, but Doggies only have 10+28, that wouldn't be enough for Butters and on-traded wouldn't be enough for Nas so still a very tough deal to do. Maybe they give you 10+28+2026R1 and you give us 10+26+28+2026R1 (Dogs)+2026R1 (Port) but given both of you would be expected to do well in 2026 with your new acquisitions, can't see those R1 picks being valued super highly.

Genuine question, if that's the case where Butters isn't traded, where are you getting at least two high top 10 picks?

Yep there isn't a real clear solution to this trade, as some have suggested it could get ugly

Honestly I've got no idea. I'm worried the club would be far too keen to give away our 26/27 futures if they can. Which I suspect will be decent picks based on Ports current list profile

I don't see a nice way through this without Butters being involved in some way
