You and Aussierules will get along like a house on fire!

Do you have a tl,dr version? Serious.
LOL, fair enough. Was something I needed to get off my chest!

The TLDR is that AFL journalists are not meeting basic journalism standards when reporting on contract negotiations. They are clearly repeating information being spoon fed to them by player managers who have direct financial interests in the outcome. The journalists don't declare where they are getting the information from - they give the player managers anonymity - and they don't independently verify the information from a second source before reporting it. Which is journalistic malpractice at best, and at worst is a form of corruption. And it has become such common practice nobody even notices anymore.

  1. Anonymous sources. In standard journalism practice you don’t grant your source anonymity unless there is a really good reason. And the reason can’t be just because they want you to. Usually there has to be repercussions for the source if they are named. If a player manager tells you that a player they represent is getting lots of offers from different clubs, then it is obviously in their financial interest for you to report that. In that circumstance the manager should never be granted anonymity in the media coverage. Either the manager comments on the record, or you don’t print the story. The only reason you would give a player manager the option of anonymity is if they were telling you something that could harm their own interests - say commenting on a story about performance enhancing drugs, for example.
  2. Sole sourcing. Standard practice is you need multiple sources for a story. ESPECIALLY if the sources will only comment off the record. So if a player manager says they are fielding interest form club X and club Y, you need to confirm the story with those clubs before reporting it as fact. Otherwise you shouldn't print it - certainly you shouldn't report it as fact.

Mostly agree but it's not quite that simple. The list managers play the game along with the player managers. So Windy's manager goes to a couple of random list managers and says "hey mate I need you to take a look at Marcus, if a journo asks say you're considering him please". Everyone knows what's happening but it's no skin off the nose of the other random list manager - in fact it's good for them to be seen as chasing other players - so they say "ok sure" and that way they're a direct source for the rumour.

Geelong have been playing finals for the past 20 years and a lot of that was top 4 finishes. They already have the core in place, we dont hence topping up with cast offs now is way too early in our development curb in my view.
Create your best 23. Include TDK Ryan and Aleer.

Makes it absolutely tough to do with some names others would think should be in that side plays magoos

100% agree.

Macrae was recruited to keep the midfield ticking over as the younger generation comes through to replace.

He has fulfilled that and more - plus we don't know the work he has done off the field to teach the youngsters with his professionalism and craft.

I think it's a great sign if Macrae starts to be pushed out of the middle.

But the opinion that he is cooked is just so far from being accurate that it should be called out.
I don't think people know how important Macrae has been this year in the development of our young at training. He is always working with them, talking, directing, coaching.
He doesn't get talked about like Wood however he is an invaluable mentor to the kids.

I am chiefly concerned how Dodson gets seniors time with TDK incoming. TDK isn't worth the coin but he costs nothing in trade so i am just ok with it. Can also see the TDK contract blowing up in the clubs face if he doesn't perform strongly.
It’s fine to keep Dodson in the 2s to develop his craft

If we land TDK, we also have more flexibility to manage Marshall whose body is beyond its prime. Keep him cherry ripe for finals. Also, one of them is bound to miss a few games here and there

3-5 games next year for Dodson is my prediction which is a good return for a 2nd year ruck

I’ve blanked out the last couple days due to poor health and return to Blake Acres reunion at RSEA

The juggernaut has truely risen

Agree, i attribute a lot of what i see from Box, Garcia and Windy with their improvement this year to Macraes arrival. He is invaluable.

Well to be fair to Acres, he never wanted to go in the first place. But at 29yr 10mth, contracted till end of 2027, that would seem to be most unlikely that we would. I like him as a player though.

Besides we more need another quick inside mid if we want to "move the dial". It would be exciting if Hall could become that player as he was dynamic in that last quarter against the Dees.
You would only look at acres if you weren’t committed to Brad Hill and Mason Wood next year.

I always thought recruiting an A grade mid to rely on was the only way to get our midfield up to standard

Turns out recruiting an A-grade leader to teach the entire midfield group to rely on each other could be even better

Exactly, the has shown promise early. But the likes of Billings, Dunstan, Acres, McCartin, Goddard and Gresham all showed promise early. You don’t stop recruiting talent just in case the youth become stars years down the track.

I think TDK is more like the Jason Blake type, who was a valuable player for us- can be swung into attack or defence, and the ruck to patch holes when needed.
