Given the threshold to trigger band 1 compo was supposed to have gone up, and the fact Brisbane salary cap must be pretty tight, I can’t see a world in which what Brisbane have offered legitimately triggers band 1 compensation. Plain as day this one will be a manufactured priority pick.

That is how it used to work. Not anymore

When a team was good previously, think early 2000's Brisbane, the cap was tight but they would still get good players - ie Caracalla - on only low money. But what then happened was young emerging stars were squeezed out for money (see Headland or Gram). Thus the cycle begins again at the bottom after the flag

With academies and f/s, this doesn't happen. Not only is there is a pipeline of elite young players arriving - think Ashcroft x2, Fletcher, Marshall and now Annabel. But more importantly they stay on lower money because they are already attached to the club. That means teams like Brisbane can still land top end talent on good money (Allen) while drafting and retaining young talent like a bottom 4 team.

Essentially they get to double dip because not only do they get access to players they never should be able to, but these kids ALSO have an inbuilt loyalty to stay. That helps your salary cap in the long term, while the carrot of immediate success works short-term. Meanwhile we are in a s^t-fight to get access, which requires being sh1t. But even then we still have to build that connection post draft, and the price gap between retaining talent and poaching talent is not as wide (see NAS). That's part of how the rich teams get richer and the gap widens

Even when Northern teams make mistakes with their cap, they can just offload the consequences with a pick (see Bowes or Atkins), because the order of picks in the open draft is meaningless to them. They draft on points. Meanwhile we draft on position. It is a two speed system. The access should be the benifit of an acadamy. Not access and a discount!

Unless you get incredibly lucky like the Dogs (with Darcy, West, Croft, Ugle-Hagen, Sanders, Libba etc etc), or you have a point of difference like Geelong (location) or Collingwood (sponsorship), teams like us will continue to struggle. It is also why figures like Hill and Wood are so important to us

Can't see a world where Marshall is at the club next season. Obviously, he will stay if we don't get good draft capital but I think the club and the player benefit from the move. If we get a first-rounder, I reckon we give Marshall a thank you handshake.

On one hand, there's no point in having Marshall and TDK in the same team. Whoever isn't primary ruck isn't going to do much.

On the other hand, Marshall is surely on a pretty modest contract after being front loaded over the past couple of years. Which would make him a very attractive trade prospect for a team going for a flag.

But it also makes him rather important for us given that TDK doesn't have the best track record with injuries, and how embarassing would it be if our 100mil recruit is out injured while Marshall becomes the AA ruck with Geelong.

Essendon and Carlton are still plagued by their administrations living in the 90s where success could be bought in paper bags and its burnt them horribly. They see themselves as just temporary paupers of the AFL and will re-claim their rightful place soon enough.

North are even more beholden to the AFL then we are due to being hemmed in on all sides and with a location that really hampers them expanding facilities. With Tasmania coming in thats going to get even worse so they dont want to rock as its gotten them free handouts in the draft so far.

Freo has the whole vic bias chip on their shoulder to a degree but many of their fans completely agree the systems are horribly one sided.

No idea with Melbourne, theyre just all away at the snow I guess.

We do have support in equalisation behind the scenes but no one else is willing to make any sort of public scene over it.
