2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

I think some on here have shiet memories on Jacks form this year. Inconsistent yes, defensively he put up somewhat of a master-class through the back end of the year.

Let him off from the captaincy, unburden him and build him up as the defensive linchpin in our midfield that allows trust for Lil Nasi-X, Hall, and others to get after the game, much like how Brisbane play with Dunkley.

I really hope Marshall and Steele play out another year, just to see how the dynamic works with a new team and where they can fit in.

Sad ending at our club. I understand it but yeah i dunno, clubs that have their shit together don't treat their stalwarts the way we are doing with Steele and Marshall. Makes our age profile healthier however so that's something.
Yes they do.
Hodge, Mitchell, Lewis
Chapman, Stevie J, James Kelly.

All multiple premiership players, all moved on

Ehh gonna have to disagree with you there. Jack's tackle numbers may be up but he often loses his man and usually only really gets those tackles in congestion when next to a man who gets the ball. They're pretty cheap tackles and he's way too slow to keep up with the opposition when they're running away in transition after a clearance

Add that to the fact his offensive output is well below par he isn't doing anything that hugh boxshall and hugo garcia can't do anyway. Comparing Dunkley to Jack is doing Dunkley a massive disservice, Dunkley is currently 10x more dynamic than Jack is, and can do a defensive job on a proper superstar such as a Matt Rowell.

I still think Jack can do a job however, but its in the forward line as a half forward if anything.

Mitch Cleary -

on tradies that was recorded this morning - has effectively called the Flanders situation. Said he will tell GC today he wants to explore a trade and will meet with clubs over the next few weeks. Q

Sam McClure -

Jack Steele don’t think he will be at the saints next year. Not sure who. He is waiting to see who looks at him. McClure thinks Essendon will look at him.

Jy Simpkin not happy with his role at Norf
28 y.o next march
Mystery mid. ?

Hall came from that system.
And if he’s half as skilled we’d do very well to get him.
We need all the skilful players we can get.

Id rather CMac over Flanders as I don't rate flanders that highly.

But (if) as soon as Flanders nominates us you bet I'm gonna start calling him an underrated jet and to get his 2026 blazer fitted

To me Flanders is the better player now and more adaptable. CMac doesn't make it as premium mid he probably struggles. Flanders can free up Nas or Hall and run on ball. At 25 he's got a fair bit of his most consistent and best footy ahead of him. He's had one elite season which is one more than just about every player we drafted in 15 years.

Yes they do.
Hodge, Mitchell, Lewis
Chapman, Stevie J, James Kelly.

All multiple premiership players, all moved on

All largely past it getting a retirement reprieve.

Hodge 34
Mitchell 34
Lewis 31

Chapman 32
Stevie J 33
Kelly 32

Steele and Marshall 30 by the time 2026 season starts with that latter very much in high demand.

2023 was the high watermark of this group.
We were 6th and in the 8 all year but copped a walloping in the final by GWS.

Our game was ok for H&A but there wasn't a list that could make up a team that could go deep into finals. Just too many gaps, especially in the ruck and mids.
Love Roh, and Jack Steele, but we need much more out of those two premier positions.
If they can continue their careers in the seniors elsewhere, they go with my blessing and absolute thanks for their efforts.
Happy if they stay as well, don't want to shit on them or be callous.

Mackenzie was pick 7 in quite a strong draft.

We now have a lot more information about him, having been in the system for 3 years. Has his value increased or decreased since then?

I'd call he break even. Not regressed or really shot up in value. Looks promising but still not a guaranteed gun. I've watch a fair bit of the Hawks and have never seen him play a good game but unless you watch them every week it's a poor guide. His highlights look great though.

Just an aside but interesting to see the result of the Sandover medal. Charlie Constable (ex Cat) won and Matt Parker (ex Saints) was runner up. Doesn't say much about the standard of the WAFL this year. Parker was in front till the last round.

His highlights have stood out to me more than Flanders, personally.

Flanders is a bit older and has had 1 very good year, much better than what CMAS has shown so far, and is supposedly injured this year.

The romance side of things doesn’t hurt tho

The weird thing is that GC are one of the priorities for the AFL and they don't have a media team editing packages of player highlights together. In a new market that's criminally negligent.

Flanders was close to the best player at the Suns last year and there is barely anything on him online. It should be an obvious hype marketing opportunity.

In theatre terms CMAC is more an ensemble player rather than a leading man.
A rising tide lifts all boats, CMAC in the mix with Hall, Pou, Windy, Hugo, NAZ, and Dow with Wilson, Trav, Henry and others running through the guts makes us much more unpredictable and the depth much better.

Arches that back and can be very elusive in traffic ..... have no idea why Mitchell has sidelined him?

Ward has come on and holding that spot out I guess.

Apart from NAS we need one or two of that group to go up a level, otherwise too much pressure will end up in one player.
At least there are options and there's no reasons why all of them can't improve next year.

Kako and Caddy are their future. Drop it on them and get in some cut priced veretan, Steele would likely be gone for a seconed and would be way less in wages.

They get Sweid this year as an NGA and got that Nguyen kid last year too. Though he looked okay when he played. El-Hawli looks like another Adam Saad too. I don't mind some of the youth. They might as well cut back and try to do a short hard reset. I think that they could keep it to a few years similar to us.

I agree. Hawks have been a bit shady talking to Merrett, now they want to underpay because the Bombers have to trade him because it’s untenable for him to stay. We copped the Hawks method with Battle last year. I’m really starting to dislike the way they are going about obtaining players
Christ alive, what do you think Gubby has been doing for the last few years? He is literally to us what Sam Mitchell's wife is to Hawthorn. Dude is using his OWN WIFE to do the job we assigned to a 60-something bloke godDAMN

Part of a much bigger trade

Steele out
CMack in

I tell you what, we need one of those mids to come if he does leave. It's going to be a thin midfield still relying on a lot of kids to hold up otherwise.

And that's the point. We would have one experienced mid in Macrae, and a bunch of maturing players. Even if we got both Flanders and CMAC, they are still potential.
We need NAZ, Pou, and some of Hall, Hugo, and anyone else we recruit to step up.
