2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

OK I found it there on Twitter. In my mind losing Windy would be more of a cultural loss than a player loss if that makes sense. He's mates with the crew. They've been on a mission. But at times he's looked bog average and the reason he tags is he's not a great kick. Personally would love to keep him as he has improvement yet I feel. But also feel he's been such a diligent trainer etc he's likely gotten a lot out of himself already.

I think clearly if he's going to Melbourne a larger deal is afoot. And also yeah, Ross likely doesn't rate him and see's Boxshall/Garcia types as moving ahead of him. As long as we don't end up with one of those washed up Melbourne mids I won't be losing sleep. As long as it doesn't disrupt the culture. I mean Melbourne aint far from St Kilda so he can still be close to NAS/his mates.

Interesting times ahead.
Well said.

It’s more culture for me, he is part of the fabric.

Academy player, local kid that went to school with some of the list, tight with all/most of the list by looks of club and personal socials, Indigenous connection, sent him O/S on that leadership development course. List goes on.

I’m sure the powers at be have taken all of this into consideration, and are prepared to take the risk. I do worry what effect is has on the others though.

Makes me think something larger is afoot like most of you say.

think it’s just a case of

Steele isn’t leaving
McRae isn’t leaving
Windy wants more cash
Boxshall can do the Windy role at a discount

The club has an offer to him, if he doesn’t want to take it we can’t begrudge the club for not keeping him or Windy for not staying.

If he feels he can get more money and midfield opportunities elsewhere, it’s what’s best for him

Hall is a better mid that Windhager already. You can see it. Hall has the smarts, is clean with the ball, one of our best kicks and can play in the congestion. Windy at this particular point in his career fumbles when in congestion, and his kicking is really hit and miss. So no way Windhager will be our 2nd best mid. It'll still be Macrae, Hall, Flanders, Mackenzie, Windhager (so fifth in line). And I wouldn't think he'll be happy with that.

How many high quality wingman do we have? Remember what we paid a squib like Hill when he came across and RTB and co have been making allowances for him ever since.

Why are people so blinded with Windhager and the midfield. The only time he played in there was to tag and the occasional rotation.

He is a high quality pressure player, puts his nose over the ball and tackles as well as Steele. I would have on a wing or back flank over everyone on the list bar Sinclair and Nas.

Oh right.

So St Kilda goes around throwing 5 year deals at an injury prone 27 year-old, and a mammoth 8 year deal to a 26 year old who's never made an AA40... while offering Windy 2 years as other clubs offer him 5.

Windy gets frustrated by this.... and it's 100% on Windy and no blame for our list managers?

To quote a famous tennis player...

"You cannot be serious!!!"
My impression of the issue is that it isn't money or tenure (anymore), it's Windy's role and status in the starting 22/23.
I reckon Windy is making a football decision rather than a financial decision.
The Dees have a very one paced midfield and might like some more dynamism.
North have midfielders who appear to be one-way runners and might like some defensive solidity.
Maybe they have roles in the guts that appeal to him more.

100%

We've upped it to 4 years, that's our value of him right now.
We see TDK & JSos as improving the list.
The market is dictating the value of the players now, not a true indication of their value
We have Windy's position covered
We need TDK & Jsos more.
Fans will go to games & buy memberships to watch TDK, Nas & Jsos
Not so much with Windy
You are arguing with someone who has bemoaned maxing the SC but suddenly wants us to over pay something like 850k to match Melbourne.
Really consistent positions, I don't think. Can't people work.out this person is posting just to bait. Absolute assclown

So wait

St Kilda offers overs to a 27 year old who's played 68 games the last 6 years (JSOS).

A longer deal than other clubs offered, and more money.

We offered TDK an extra $600k or whatever per year, more than Carlton

Yet we're blaming our own 22 year old midfielder who's played 75 games in his first 4 years, for wanting St Kilda to pay him what other clubs are willing to pay?

All I'll say is, I hope no Saints players have BigFooty accounts, they'll realise how deluded half the fanbase is, and how they're happy gaslighting players
Club not blaming him?
Just not seeing him as, as valuable to the list as the others l suppose.
Obviously
If the others, stay fit, play to a good standard in their positions
they should bring more wealth to the club, by way of memberships, more game day ticket sales, improve the list etc.

Mind you, we have a current player on an 8 year contract who can't get on the field, and probably will never see a full season out..

maybe like Battle the initial lowball offer was the reason for looking round at all.

Adds to my point really.

And I understand the comments around Windy perhaps seeing more preferable football opportunity for himself at Melbourne.

But that doesn't absolve St Kilda from offering him 2 years, when he's clearly proven himself in our best 23, and at 22 years old he should only improve.

Nothing beats old fashioned scouting.

Ross could have the same reservations us people in here based on footage.

Maybe he wanted a second game live viewing.
We aren’t buying a player for 800k annualised after watching him play live once or twice. That behaviour is malpractice

I see you're trusting media reports when it's convenient for you!

Consistency not your thing either hey?

And I'm not against spending our cap. I'd just rather spend on our young players, rather than overpriced, injury-prone veterans from basketcase clubs.

Not 100% against Silvagni either, it's just the 5 years JSOS, 2 years Windy that frustrates me.

At this stage it’s hard to think of a wrong move this new administration has made.

They’ve come with a purpose of changing our clubs narrative from being cellar dwellers who take whatever scraps were given, to standing up and not taking any shit.

We’ve drafted well, we’ve got players wanting to come play for us.

All we need now is a fully fit Max King and you never know what could happen

Considering the Caro article from yesterday clearly explains Ross made the final call. I can’t imagine he has watched Aleer live more than a couple of times.

But someone/others would have watching him live plenty. It isn’t necessarily the job of Ross to do so.

Ross speaks about delegation in the new improved bossco, this will be another example of that behaviour

****ing hell, when did Jack Silvagni become a star and people will buy memberships to go and watch him?

Yes, but as the article said. It’s coming down to his decision. To which my point was that he probably wanted to see him live in action again.

Obviously at this point he hasn’t been sold on what he has seen or heard to feel like he needs to see it again himself with his eyes.

Still think the Windy stuff is posturing and he stays.

Imagine going to Melbourne after what we did to them. Can't see it.
I’d say there is some youthful immaturity here.

But then again, he might genuinely think he does deserve it.

In the fullness of time, right?

Do think people buy memberships to watch Windy play? Not many players have that pull, we have one in NAZ that just attracted 17k new members, yes at a discount, but if we perform, maybe half will stick, that's 8.5 k new members.
Reckon we haven't had a player like that since Plugger.
The pull of TDK,SoS, Ryan, and others PLUS the retention of NAZ and the return of King, gives confidence and hope. Our membership for full memberships will increase with this new hope and confidence.
I hope Windy is part of it, but doubt we lose memberships if we lose him.
