2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

Why is it misleading? One is using the ball a lot more and using it to break lines. It's there regardless. You can't make it up. For how he plays Nas is above average. KPDs are usually very high efficiency because they pass it off to players like Nas, Hammer is worse than most of his peers in that regard.

Flanders plays with in his means but he's still a very good user of the ball. He's not Fiorini who racks up stats but a lot miss a target. CMac seems to be quite good at picking out kicks but it doesn't mean Flanders disposal is bad.
I never said it was bad, I just said I prefer 20 Cmack disposals over 30 Flanders disposals

Then you brought up the stat comparison, and now you've just admitted that they don't tell the full story

Cornes comment on the radio, was "non -damaging ".

I'd rather a guy who wins the footy and gets it out to better users than a guy that barely touches it. He's hard working and not a stats padder with one twos and standing off the pack waiting for chips. He wins the footy, can play anywhere and has levels to go up. It's a no brainer to chase him IMO.

Now would be a good time to bring out the stats

His contested/uncontested possession ratio during his 6-week spell in the midfield was 67:128

34% of his possessions were contested whilst playing inside midfield. If we want to use the Lachie Neale example that was proposed yesterday - 48% of his possessions throughout his career have been contested

2/3 of Flanders' possessions are uncontested

You can compare similar roles. A KP is not going to have the same stat line as a mid. A guy who carries the ball and breaks lines isn't going to have the same as an inside extractor either. Flanders playing as a backline distributor probably could be compared to Nas comfortably because they played the same role.

The stats are the stats. You can question how useful they are but he's either got the disposal and the efficiency or he doesn't. CMac playing as a 4th midfielder running around getting fed the ball so he can motor out into space might not translate when he moves up to the second mid position.

I'd say Flanders is more contested and he's clean off the ground and in the air. He is probably more of a physical player where as CMac is more class and initial burst speed out of a contested situation.

when does pre season training start usually?

will be back in oz next week, next departure is nov 13,back march 25,will miss round 1 vfl if that starts at same time as this year

thinking of staying in oz for an extended time, till i can take the cold no longer anyway

like to do a track watch & get to see a few games at both levels, our vfl team should be sensational next season

He was never the first mid though. He was standing off as the third defensive mid behind Anderson and Touk Miller probably. He might not step up to become elite but he can play footy and he has massive scope for improvement. You can't say stats are irrelevant and then try to use them to discredit. What are McKenzie's contested stats?

Yet you constantly say negative things about him.

I doubt any Club will bid early on a player just to dish out payback. The club involved will need to want that player, or otherwise they might get stuck that player instead of another player that they actually preferred.
Particularly when we’ve shown we won’t necessarily take the academy player, even with the discount. See Hoffman last year.

I made a prediction to my dad a number of years ago that Essendon would not win a flag with Brad Scott and Carlton would not win a flag with Voss. Blind freddy could see both are not up to it. Voss couldn't hack it as Lion's coach and Scott couldn't hack it at Norf.

Anyways, to keep it on topic, what do we all think about what we will do with Dodzilla next year? I fear that he will be stuck in the VFL and may seek to go back to SA.

Yes, I agree that similar roles can be compared

But you just said that Flanders is more contested - where is the evidence for that?

As I said, 34% of Flanders' possessions were contested in that 6-week full time mids period

Conversely, Mackenzie played 40%+ CBAs in rounds 1,3,5,6,7,10. Over this period, 64% of his possessions were contested

So no, Flanders is not more contested than Mackenzie. He might rack up more of the ball, but there's another dimension that can be explored that supports Kane Cornes' 'non-damaging' argument

I think Mackenzie will be a similar case to Aleer, in that we've got in his ear early but nothing will happen until he is OOC next year.

He will likely spend most of the year in the VFL if Merrett and/or Petracca come across & Day gets fit. Combined with being OOC he will cost far less in a trade. We will probably have the option of Cat B listing his brother up our sleeves too

Only way I see anything happening this year is if Hawthorn get desperate for our first in their pursuit of Merrett, in which case I'd want pick 26 coming back as a minimum

I don’t know.

If I had to guess, early November for 1-4 year players and late November/December for senior players.

1st-4th year players return early November, the rest mid November. Although last year there were a few senior players training with the new guys from day 1.

I'm guessing, but probably Nov 10

7 for CMac and 26. 26 for Ryan and the Eagles 3rd, use that for Aleer plus GWS 4th, then use that to match the bid for Fincher.
Get four players for the price of one pick.
