2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

I agree with ...gulp... the Dopers on this one.

Contracted for 2 more years, already had his deal upped twice... and the club captain FFS.

Essendon should make Hawthorn bleed over this.

They should cough up at least 2 x 1sts plus some decent steak knives.
Yep 100% agree with this.

Think what we paid for HILL! Merrett is more valuable

Devil is in the detail.

Of the confirmed players wanting to come across.

We have done a medical with Ryan which only occurs with West Coasts blessing.

GWS knew about Aleers contract offer as he was OOC

TDK and JSOS both free agents.

Merrett is contracted. Met with Hawthorn behind the back of the club he captains and is now forcing a move through.

The Flanders report is not confirmed that we have received his word to be traded to us and Gold Coast denied he was available.

Marshall met with Geelong because Ross believes the playing group should explore their options - because it should reaffirm the information he is being fed back. Which is the environment and culture is top 4 in the league. IF Marshall leaves - it then feeds into RTBs point that it will only occur at the benefit of the football club.

Very different scenarios.
They just need to force merrett to stay. They will have nobody else at the club of any real value. Who do they market around, Gresham’s manicured luscious eyebrows?

They honestly should probably commit to the rebuild and take a shitload of high picks for him.

If he genuinely doesnt wanna be there and theyre gonna be trash anyway dump the cap hit, take the picks, maybe throw some cash at some other decent aging mid as a mentor (Steele?)

Sure the picks make sense. But they don’t really have anything left. Draper was fairly marketable for them, but without Merrett it’s just an enormous void.

Kako and Caddy are their future. Drop it on them and get in some cut priced veretan, Steele would likely be gone for a seconed and would be way less in wages.

Let’s be honest, Marshall wouldn’t want to stay because
1. A chance to get paid more (his contract was front loaded
2. His preferred position is now filled by TDK
3. Chance to play in an already contending side with less pressure on him.
Will be closer to home

The league has taken a half pregnant approach to free agency for a long time. Were warned about the end game of that approach for years.

Well it seems the chickens are coming home to roost. If all the rumblings around long term contracted players have a whiff of truth to them things are already out of control. Nothing is true, everything is permitted.

Clubs need the ability to trade players in to a club that suits them best almost immediately. Signing a long term contract to extort more money, get your contract front loaded, then make the relationship with your club and the team untenable to force their hand because it doesn't suit you anymore is rotten to the core.

Heard a good idea yesterday regarding this.

Any contract longer than 4 years results in the club being able to trade a player to the club of their choice.

Anything shorter than 3, the player has to agree to be traded to their new club.

Case in point Merrett wants out... that's sweet but we're sending you to whoever gives Essendope the best return.

It especially gives clubs some security if they have front loaded a contract only for the player to decide they want out when they have a few years on less coin remaining.

I do get why we dont have the US model but also, the US model makes the most sense overall.

If contracts dont matter to players then they shouldnt to clubs either.

Bunch of clowns? Really? As someone who has spent a significant portion of my life with a sibling who is an addict I feel eminently qualified to find a laugh over the situation wherever I can. She has orchestrated car thefts from family members, stolen irreplaceable items with highly significant sentimental value from family members, lied directly to their faces about it whilst living in their homes, turned up to children’s birthday parties drug affected and disappeared entirely off the face of the planet for 3 years! If you don't find a laugh amongst all that crap when you can, you'd lose your mind.

So if someone suggested that growing up around you will do that to a person or something along those lines you'd laugh it off? It was pretty poor taste. CF is a good poster and a nice bloke from what I can tell so probably just a bit of humour that came across wrong hopefully.
