2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

So that’s the famous Gubby.
First time I’ve ever heard him speak.
That’s one interesting character…if he was any more laid back he’d be asleep.
he never quite recovered from this day,2.05,but former saints kellett duperuzel and malthouse get some air time as well

Geelong can believe in the tooth fairy for all I care. Give us your future first or we can keep him in the VFL while you get smacked in another grand final because your midfielders can’t get first use.
FFS Geelong, you want the player, its next years F1 or FO,pay up and move onto other draft potentials.

If we cave for pick 25 for Marshall after all Lyon has said about trading of contracted players, we are as unserious as the Bulldogs and all of the goodwill and confidence in what the Saints are doing will evaporate.
Lyon was upfront, was not prompted to make those statements and was adamant he would follow that advice.

Will watch the Gubby interview again just for the lolz

Tell you what we have 4 staunch people in RTB, SOS, Basset & Gubby leading the charge
How's that cycle go again?

Bad times create hard men
Hard men create good times
Good times create soft men
Soft men create bad times

So Geelong are trying to take the upper hand and believe we need to do the deal for $$$. If the noise about us front ending Marshall's contract to meet 95% is true, then that puts that to bed pretty quickly

So I’m going with @saintmike65 if he thinks this Fincher kid is a good fit.
I boundary umpired a fair few games this year for APS and AGSV and saw Fincher play a few games in person (apart from when they rested him lmao).

Was pretty comfortably close to the best player in every game he played. Always played as a midfielder and had a bit of mongrel in him. Very lippy.

Obviously in the AFL the team isn’t going to be built around him and won’t look for him so we’ll see how he can adjust but I can see him making it.

It’s one opinion against the many saying otherwise.

I’d argue Twomeys interview on Sen is more accurate.

If we want to deal further and usually things open late on players who are unavailable at the start of trade period. We will need to move Rowan and Jack on to facilitate those deals.

I was convinced on Hall watching him round 1 in Adelaide - first time I’d seen him.

Fair difference between a mature aged player and a kid in his first season holding down the lock down position , Im not sure you are reading all the message , i never said he was no good

So us holding out for a future first must be because we plan on targetting another big name next year, and want to capital to do so.

Even if we see next year's draft as better than this one, it's a bit of a moot point, as our list build is geared towards competing for a flag in 27-29, and anyone drafted in 26 is unlikely to be a massive part of that push. Hell, if we kept Marshall, even in the twilight of his career he'd still probably offer more to a flag run than anyone drafted mid to late draft in 26.

That, coupled with Gubby's declaration that we still had cash to spend says to me we want to keep bringing in top end talent via trades next year. Coming in to a year with opposition clubs and, importantly, player managers knowing that we have the money and the draft capital to get big trades done can only be a good thing. Very astute signalling by the team IMO

So everyone calling Allen a liar, apparently we are now cash strapped because of the reckless spending.

Sack SOS.
Ol mate Liquor Licence has very few friends left and none at the Saints.

He'd be happy to be Geelong's mouthpiece if they'll give him the time of day. We are now seeing how the two clubs operated via the 'media'.

Its a shame that people like Morris or Barrett enjoy raining on our parade, but thats their MO.

Hopefully we come out and put our hat in the ring for a big name player and openly say we can easily get him without any outgoings.

HBF yes, last line on the best small forward is a massive ask.

Most experienced players can’t handle that job, we’re really going to miss JWeb. What a pity Paton had the bad break, he had the size, pace and leap to go with the best of them.

I was responding to that particular post where you spoke about Hall.
More agreeing about trusting Mike’s ability to pick a player.
That’s why I mentioned Hall.

And why I’ll trust him about Fincher..
I never mentioned anything about you saying he’s no good.

Future first could just mean it holds more value in the trade. Another club, ie Hawthorn with CMac, could want a F1 instead of something that will end up being a pick in 20s this year.

Basically, thinking we want an F1 to actually use next year may not be correct.
I just think that this years draft stinks. Not only is the quality not great but it's probably the most compromised draft we have seen and a first round pick is more like a second round pick for most.

Next year I think we will see some changes to the top end of the draft.
