2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

If we're talking pick 7 for Flanders, it has to be with one of Gold Coasts later first round pick coming back.

Eg. Pick 7 and a future 2nd round pick for Flanders & pick 16.

Gold Coast have a few very highly rated draftees, so they would want to make sure they've got the points to cover Uwland and Patterson for certain.

If they took our pick 7 this year and future 2nd around pick ~28 next year, that would give them 2048 points (1543 + 505). Pick 16 is worth 924 points, so that's a decent upgrade in points to ensure they can afford all of their draftees. Looking at the latest phantom draft by Twomey (https://www.afl.com.au/news/1427257...m-guide-top-draft-prospects-september-ranking), if all their prospects cop bids similar to his phantom they have:

Pick 2: Zeke Uwland (2481)
Pick 4: Dylan Patterson (1962)
Pick 26: Beau Addinsall (561)

That's 5004 points they need for their first 3 academy kids, they have 3663 with their 6, 13 and 16 picks. If Richmond or Essendon choose to be kents, they could put some early bids in to give them headaches. Shit, it might not even be being kents, Uwland has been talked up as #1 or around abouts for ages so he's definitely getting an early bid.

After the time and effort they've put into their academy and their history of losing talent they draft back to Vic, those 2 tops prospects would be their absolute priority surely.

We also have better points to offer GC this year than any of the other prospective club talked up, Dees have no first round, Carlton will get a pick a few after ours for TDK, Geelong have **** all, North have **** all.

If we can get Flanders in, take a ~9 pick downgrade and lose some draft capital next year, I'll take that.

I feel like if we're getting Flanders then we need at least one Rod or Todd to go with him - any suggestions?

I feel that will give us the best chance of asking this question in the future:

"Did anyone pray for giant boots"

Goldstein?

So Edmund claiming Ross said we have $4-$5m to spend this trade period at a function yesterday.
I honestly don't believe the accuracy of anything out of Edmund's mouth whether it benefits us or not.

Like McClure, likes to get a whiff of something and then post opinion as inside info.

There are very few I would take at face value in the media atm. Twomey is a about the only one.

Add on the Crouch and Billings salaries that is getting up to what I calculated

----------------------------------------------

So the 83% is what we didn't spend in 2025 because of front ended contracts.
So
5 % x 2 years previous saved = 1.83 million
17% from 2025 unspent = 3.111 million
So 5 mill to spend
This does not include a 5% overspend this year for saving 5% in 2024 = 915k
Billings and Crouch payments = 500k (guess)
No SC increases in current contracts could be 1.5 to 2 million
We don't know any current contracts front loading in 2026 ( except for TDK, JSOS and maybe Aleer).
So at least 5 million, but could be anything up to 6.5 million above SC.

Who is 1.5 x 5

I thought the reporting on Flanders was that we requested a trade to Victoria but hadn't nominated?

Now, IF that reporting is accurate (IF)

Surely that shows a bit of professionalism and wanting to sort a good deal, so that doesn't exactly put Essendon right into the box seat if they only have picks in the 20s. They'd have to go hog wild with the cash offer to change the situation to a 'strict Essendon nomination, get me there or I'll crash this plane with no survivors' scenario.

Again, I'm often extremely wrong, but I think the lack of direct nomination straight out of the gate would mean that one team would really have to blow all of the others out of the water contract-wise to derail what might be a 'mutually beneficial' trade negotiation

Those unhappy with potentially (I think it’s part of the deal at minimum) pick 7 to get Flanders need to do all their research on his 2024 season.

If and you are assuming the club thinks it’s easily doable that he gets back there. Thats easily a top 10 pick in a draft as good as last years.

He's the best player that we have looked at so far. At least they'll be pleasantly surprised. If he really has had a bad back he could be back to elite as soon as next season. We look a mid less than we need when you look over the list.

When did they increase Brisbane and GC’s cap?
could be wrong but i thought the lions and sydney had them then they were discontinued around 2006... then fired back up after 2016?

i know GC has had things like AFL money going to players to keep them at the club.

He's 7 who everyone suddenly treating like a 9 because he looked our way.

He had a 9 to 10 season last year, had an injury restricted 2025 out of position and was still serviceable. It's not like he's 30 and 5 years since he had a good year.

I'd say that if you have one elite recent season, it's not ridiculous to expect them to have another at 24 years old. Jack Sinclair was still a borderline player at his age.

This isn't like getting Ryan Byrnes and dreaming of Dangerfield. At worst you could accuse him of being another Harry Sheezel where some question his impact per touch but even that is pretty rough on both of them. You'd rather a guy who touches the ball 30 times and uses it well than a guy who hardly gets a touch. You are talking about replacing Ryan Byrnes, Stocker or Hunter Clark type with an upgrade.

Ask North what they'd want for Harry Sheezel.

Player ratings overrate half backs where he played a lot in 2024. The coaches votes are a good sign but that fact it's such a short sample size and he's got none of the accolades any of those other players you've mentioned have are more illustrative that he's a level below them rather then in a similar conversation.

He couldn't back it up and Gold Coast actively pushing him out of those positions this year. He's good but not elite.

Honestly who do you leave out of the best starting midfield with Rowell, Anderson and Miller. He got replaced off HB with GC's big ticket recruit in Rioli and John Noble was bought in to get fast running off HB which pushed him out of that spot too. He was forced to play high half forward in a pool of pretty good talent.

If he's available you grab him and run. Opportunity knocks you grab it.

Marshall played every game of the season, my man.

Just spent the majority of Round 1 as a forward while Boyd did most of the ruck work.

I just had a look at AFL tables. They have him starting his season in round 2. One of us has done too many drugs.

Just taking a quick look at his 2024 numbers they are seriously bonkers including a number of games over 40, and when he went into the midfield he kicked a goal a game.

I agree with you, opportunity knocks to get a gun, you get them.

Better than TDK?

My feeling is that the club has had something worked out with Gold Coast for a while, probably not the exact deal but the bones of it.
All worked out very amicably I believe

Cornes and Kingy just laughed off Flanders today. Sarcastic about his ability to 'move the needle' and 'that'll really get them there'. Anyway, let me ask, are we talking Paddy Dow-like value here?
