2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

I think there's a Sam Fisher or Max Hudghton argument... but Wilkie is very important.
So it is a conclusion that St Kilda are really throwing the kitchen sink at this trade season. Did you predict it would go like this?

Man Sam Fisher was a good player.

I can't believe he only made one AA team, I thought he was phenomenal from 2006-2011 and should have been a perennial selection.

Everytime i catch a replay of a game from that era he stands out like crazy, he looks like our Rooey in the backline.

Would honestly have him up there with Roo, Lenny, Dal and Milne as a top 5 player for us during that era.

After trying to fleece the club over the last few weeks, I’d prefer someone else be captain.

Wilkie signed the contract, now he thinks it’s not good enough? That’s not what a captain does
Seriously - how does anyone come up with "After trying to fleece the club over the last few weeks".........

What, based off some minor media reports about contract haggling?

I once saw headlines on a magazine in a supermarket that screamed that Kylie was pregnant to an Alien!!! Hope it all turned out OK for her...........

Paying too much for Ryan and Aleer there
Ryan is a worth a 50s pick at best.
And Leer is worth a 40s pick based purely on potential - if it was output he would be a 70s pick.

Geelong should definitely be paying pick 17 and f2 for Marshall at a minimum, as Pick 17 will likely become a mid/late 20s pick, after FA compo and bids.

Trading Marshall will also free up salary to have a crack at Zac Bailey in free agency next year.
Bombers will be offering $1.3m x 6, among other clubs.

Not sure we can compete with that now. Unless we zoom up the ladder this year and become incredibly sexy on field.

Tonight’s B&F will reveal a lot about the futures of Steele, Wilkie and Marshall. They can all put it to bed individually if they are 100% committed to staying, or say nothing and leave it open to conjecture. I’m confident we will know much more by this time tomorrow
Might get a fair idea here

I will keep worrying.

Wilkie is a rare St Kilda success story (our equivalent of Geelong plucking identified talent from anywhere), he was working full time as an accountant in Adelaide before joining us and is the glue that holds the team together.

He needs to be retained.
Sinclair rookie
Marshall from nowhere

Shit, Nas at 11 is gold

Traded in Steele for nothing and has been a ripping leader

Agree we gotta keep him but we have actuall made many other good moves

After all of the experts in body language and reading between the lines interpreting every word and gesture from NAS as proof that he was gone, those guys could all say they are aren't going anywhere and the Dogs and Cats can get stuffed and we'd still have people saying they're all gone.

The captain and the winner are usually the only players who speak so I dont know where this expectation that players must do a speech of declaration has come from.

The only reason to not shut down the bulldogs immediately is to increase his current contract. The one he signed a couple of years ago. It’s not a good look

Commenti? Cammanitti? Are you peanuts trying to trigger us lol
Camma is going to be a St. Kilda Premiership player....calling it now! And SOS will be vindicated and will be seen as a list building genius...if they win a flag in the next 3 years...the plan to raid Carlton's list to build a Premiership team will be written about mentioned for years...they might even make a doco about it...staring Eric Banner, Mrs. SOS, JSOS and the man himself Sir SOS, Cammanitti will be the first feel good piece after they discuss his failed attempt to raid GWS's list for a Cartlon flag...the lessons he has learned....
I got a box of galv screws I’m prepared to throw in as well.
Are they Bugle headed galv. screws, 100mm long with a couple of driver bits thrown in?

I liked him in his draft year, he didn’t go early but I’m not surprised he’s playing well.

Having said that it would be a crazy trade, he’s no lock to be a regular let alone a star and even Mutt supporters have knocks on him. He’s been good alongside Richards in career best form and the number 1 player in the league in Bontempelli. A flat track game against north is his best game so far, averages under 20 touches in a stacked midfield. The mutts would be very happy given he was pick 45 but a swap for Wilkie is really just having a laugh imo.

The bulldogs simply don’t have anyone of value their prepared to let go who would turn our heads. Even adding their first rounder to the players they’d offer up just won’t do it.

We could have a change of mind if we were bold and thought we could swap Marshall for SDK. Then maybe you’d entertain a trade with a player and picks. I’m not as positive on Wilkie’s long term outlook as some. I think 5 years on huge money is fantastic for him personally but I wouldn’t pay that. I’m more cautious, undersized slightly slow key defenders don’t need to loose much to drop off a cliff.

His injury run has been incredible but 5 years is just wow, if the Mutts are serious then cough up.

Highly unlikely we trade Wilkie and unlikely we end up with SDK.

The sub plot to all of this is what are contracts worth when players sign front loaded deals then want out with years to run. I’d have thought the afl would have some interest in the Wilkie/Merrett situations along with the aflpa. It’s easy to say he's contracted just so no but it’s bound to have an impact on the player and by extension on his current club.

Wilkie in this case is looking at missing out on $3,750,000 over 5 years as things stand and assuming reports of his current contract and what’s been offered are true. That’s going to sting especially when you consider he must have been on peanuts with us initially.

This feels like standing at an auction with a $1 million budget and bidding $5 million, there are laws against that. I can’t believe the media are cheering this rubbish on including that twerp Gerard Whateley.
Great post, thanks.
Agree with all. Especially the players having been front-loaded and then wanting out for more.
Its a crock.
I'm sorry for Wilkie missing out, but that's life. Pretty sure some of our benefactors can make (some of it) up to him in a few ways. But no ways should the club match, even if we had the dollars in hand.
Just sets you up for more players holding the club to ransom in the future.
Hold firm SOS.

We were exposed terribly after losing Battle to the Hawks and then Howard going down.
Fancy losing your second AA backman in two years when the club is attempting to climb up the ladder?
It would mean the List Managers had lost sight of what they were trying to achieve.

Speaking of Lyon, he has spent two seasons of sometimes drab and dour matches, drilling and drilling our full team defence, especially this year with an undermanned backline. He would be wrapt to lose the player who hasn't missed a game in 5 seasons and plays 99% of game time, is AA and the best backman we have had since Spud.
So what do we do?
We cannot be matching what the Dogs are offering, surely?
And it really annoys me that we are in this position when he's still contracted for 2 years.
The Dogs are being vindictive because they lost out on JSOS in a "fair fight."

Yes agree- I was referring more to the narrative

Yehhhhh im not sure about this. In reality i think this is just gonna start to become the norm.

Because they will be shite for years.
Even Cornes (believe it or not) said he'd be choosing the Saints over Dees any day. They're losing their best player, more than likely, and they are a rabble.

Heard Richo’s making a guest appearance to announce the delisting of all three.

I can only assume its a better financial offer? Some players are less motivated by the success than they are the dollars

This is true. But we have made a pretty decent offer by all accounts. I guess we'll know soon enough.
As Cornes also said, does the pure fact that he's available, and has 4 clubs interested - hence possibly a bidding war actually enhance him as a player - more than he's actually worth?
