2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Bailey Smith did an insta suggesting he's teaming up with Charlie Curnow next year. It's all so silly but it begs the question, if Geelong are going for Curnow then surely they can't get Marshall.
Nothing surprises me but in this case I can’t see how Geelong would get a deal done short of trading stars.

Sorry yo be  this guy, but heard all this before he signed, everyone had a theory, had heard from an impeccable source, take it to the bank etc.
He was going home after his first year, 3 years later he resigns.
No doubt we have two years to change his mind, but everything can change in a week
Just say we win a flag in 27 ( unlikely but gor the argument). He may think he has done what he wanted to achieve and leave.
Now let's say we make finals in 26 and a PF in 27 ( more likely than a flag) he may decide that he has unfinished business and stay.
Anything said more than two years before the 31st Oct 2027 should be taken with a huge boulder sized grain of salt.
Hence why I said thats the current thinking. Of course things can change, but I think the reality is that we need to convince him at the next junction opposed to 'staying' being the default. To be honest, finding a partner local who wants to stay local will change everything - when you are single, going 'home' is always the draw. Life changes quick.

But I maintain that the default isnt staying and that does complicate things.

The problem for the SA teams still remains, find $2 million and work a trade.

If and it’s a massive if Nas wants out in two years, god it’s laughable even talking about it. Bing has been moving to St Kilda since he was drafted but somehow keeps lining up for the GC.

Well its the reason he took a two year contract.
We all know its up to the Saints to show its worth staying.
And good on him for only taking 2 years, leaving a mill on the table from Port, and backing himself to be better in 2027 to get the monster contract.
At leastvhe didn't take a 7 year contract and want out after 3.

We have stretched a few caps offering crazy money for guys like Merrett and Callaghan. GWS and Essendon have to stump up more which loosens a few fringe players later.

Maybe the Dogs are putting us back in our box a bit.
Your last point is almost certainly part of it.

The Bulldogs strategy has been reactionary rather than being planned and strategic. Emotion has almost certainly played a significant part in it. We know that from the reported timeline.

Our blokes will be clinical and rational. They are smart. You never know what can happen (for both clubs) as a result of these sudden recruiting raids.

We’ll be okay.

Maybe as well as reuniting the De Koning brothers, we can also reunite the Garcia brothers 🤣🤣

What are Geelong using to get a trade with Carlton done for Curnow?

They have little draft capital.

It can only be players.

The debt talk from a few pages back.

This from Dilena

We've come from a pretty extreme debt position to a position that is probably a bit more manageable now. We'll take another $1.5 million off our debt and get it down to a pretty manageable position," he said

The captain and the winner are usually the only players who speak so I dont know where this expectation that players must do a speech of declaration has come from.
Yeah I realise that not many players get up and speak. Just feel it will come out in the wash. EG: It will be mentioned by Dilena or Ross, reliable sources make statements of what was discussed, etc. Historically many players moves come straight after a B&F in one way or another

I think this is pretty clear to most people, to be honest.

Otherwise he would have signed longer term.

My spiel was stating that St Kilda's plan would be to enter 2028 with Nas re-signed and on the road to success.

Not that it was definitely going to happen.
