2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

Unquestionably. Saints are being a serial pest at the moment.

If you don’t ask you can’t get.

I’d love Daicos to nominate Saints just for the melts.
Nick's not doing anything and would be bemused by all this. Peter on the other hand..

If he doesn't win the Copeland next year, Nick is a Monty for the Devils.

You are totally missing the point

He is in an industry where he has options. He can request a trade and 9/10 it gets done

The club has some power but generally speaking, the players have more.

Again, how far do you commute for work? Would you move 2 hours away and be forced to play a different role? Or, would you look into your options?
I’m not missing the point at all.

You’re saying that our contracted ruckman has moved or wants to move and we’re obliged or somehow obligated to accomodate his request for a trade.

I know where Marshall is from but I’m not the domestic situation review cell of bigfooty so have interest in his current situation or plans. He is contracted and has no business with Geelong until we agree to trade him and agree to the terms of that trade.

Where I live and how far I travel for work is of what significance ?. He’s in a unique position as a professional sportsman who can only ply his trade at one of 18 clubs. He’s currently contracted for a further 2 years with the st Kilda football club, end of story.

Haha I know right - I read that a few times to make sure I hadn't missed anything but that post made absolutely no sense.
Reminds me of some of the Adelaide based commentator nuffie tweets during NWM time.

That was Schrodinger's NAS - no-one had spoken to him but he had 'changed his mind' and was leaning towards Port. Just putting stuff against the wall without taking a second to see if there was any logic our rigour to it.

Feeding the chooks, indeed.

You'd have to see what else is happening with the trade but Brisbane getting pick 16 for their free agent whilst bringing in 2 free agents of their own is daylight robbery. Thats on top of getting Annable and Ashcrofts/Marshall for bugger all.

Worst club in the comp making the best club stronger when the PSD was sitting there free to be used.

Roma's price better go through the roof with ridiculous trades like this setting a precedent.
it's a disgrace. the AFL should have simply told West Coast they are able to bring in free agents without diluting their own compensation, and this could have mostly been avoided.

meanwhile Brisbane have been playing chicken with Allen's contract to manipulate the Eagles' compensation pick & force them to hand over pick 16. how does Oscar feel about that? better now I guess...

we complain a lot about the academy bidding system but IMO it's largely been fixed with the new DVI and further changes coming next year. if the old DVI was still in place there's a good chance GC would have hung onto Flanders. plus they lost Lukosius last year. they are not getting these guys for "free" any more

gifting the premiers a first rounder when they should be entitled to nothing is far worse IMO. but not really surprising when you look at who is in charge now

….The lack of financial acumen from the football media at this time of year is astounding, …
Maybe it’s not a lack of knowledge and maybe they don’t even really care about the details - especially if it makes the story more ‘foggy’.

They want sound bites and clicks

So next year's team will be Nas, Wilkie and the rest being Ringers via free agency and trade. Monty Burns would be loving this! De Goey, I told you to trim those sideburns!

A question for the 25 people who liked this post.

If St Kilda hadn't signed TDK, would Marshall be leaving?

If your answer is yes, then explain why the rumors of Marshall leaving emerged later in the season, once it was basically confirmed TDK was coming.

Was it merely a coincidence that our number 1 ruck just happened to decide he wanted out, immediately after it was confirmed he'd be replaced as our number 1 ruck?
Not sure of your post. He had wanted to leave at the end of last season, it’s widely known on this board. Or is this just another one of your conspiracy theories to pot the Club.

See, the reality is this, at best TDK will improve our playing list and would improve our ruck-forward combination with RoMa, if he wanted to stay. At worst TDK is a succession plan for a player who was aging, & well and truly indicating his long-term playing future wasn’t at StKFC and was elsewhere.

It's also been under the radar, this is at least 4 years in the planning (NWM may have brought it forward a year).

There's a shock factor to this in that it hasn't been done before and no "reporter" saw it coming.

The lack of financial acumen from the football media at this time of year is astounding, but they can get away with almost anything because of the hidden nature of football contracts. Most 'reporting' is parroting sources, no investigative journalism is occurring.

It may or may not turn out, but it's a bold strategy and needs to be admired (once understood).
Yep.
We’ve literally been telling anyone who’ll listen what our plan is for the last 4-5 years and still nobody is listening/absorbing.
Can understand it from room-temp Big Footy posters, but not from the media. It’s pathetic.

"Jordan De Goey remains committed to Collingwood despite trade week speculation about his future.

A tumultuous trade period has seen De Goey’s name raised in trade rumours with the 2023 premiership hero said to be linked to St Kilda.

But it is understood the Saints have not made contact with De Goey or his management since the 2022 free agency decision that saw him come close to signing with St Kilda before recommitting to the Magpies.

De Goey represents relatively strong value for the Pies, given he is on around $800,000 per season on a deal running through to the end of 2027. "

Ok who planted this story and why

Calculating Cal Two-bats is of the opinion that the Marshall deal will go through. So that means we need another serious half-decent ruck option

Wait...what? No contact by us since 2022. Am I missing something?

To be fair, I feel like this is the 2nd or 3rd time we've told everyone this was our strategy, it's just the other times we didn't end up executing it because the free agents didn't want to come.

This time, we just lowered the bar and raised the purchasing price. I'm sure we didn't want to spend well over $2m a year on TDK and JSOS, but it is what it is.

I know this would massively buck the trend for ruckman at AFL level, but I would not be surprised if Dodson is up to it already for half a dozen games next year if he had a part time ruck partnered with him to share the duties. Has already debuted and did not look out of place at all, has been smashing the VFL in his first year and now has another pre-season to put on some size.

If we do trade Heath to the Dees, I wouldn't be opposed to a reserves level ruck to come in and help in that event, but I wouldn't be going and trading for a teams reserve ruck. A Braydon Preuss type or similar.

Go for a GP visit come home to De Goey rumours.

I’m loving this trade period, we must be driving the opposition crazy.
