2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Honestly don’t think he’s too far wrong. Ro will be 30 next year and his body and form has been below his best the last 12 months. If we were offering a first for ruckman with a similar profile I’d be flat. The fact we’re potentially getting a first is great for us.
It will be about pick 23. It's an early second. Stop calling it a first.

Reckon we'll re-sign Moose if that happens.
Yeah I was thinking we could probably achieve with tdk and Muzza almost as well as we wanted to achieve with tdk and Roma.
We could still give it a go with tdk and Keels. Keels bounced back pretty well at the end of the season.
The big issue would be if tdk went down. Roma can handle the ruck load on his own but doubt any of the others can.

Its freakin hilarious now ..... everyone was laughing at us approaching players over the last 2 years and throwing big wads of cash at them showing we are in the market to buy ..... now every club is doing it ..... clubs now reaching out to Naicos and others even though they are well entrenched and contracted .... crazy how much shit we have copped .... but now when other clubs do it .... its eye on the ball with great forward planning

"Unless the free agency rules are changed, I would think contracted players are at your club unless you decide otherwise," he said.

"And as (Cats coach) Chris Scott said to me, (Tim) Kelly wanted to go home, he had children under duress, and they needed family support, but we weren't trading him.

"They kept him for another 12 months and got two first round picks and got (Jeremy) Cameron through the door.

"He said to me, Ross, if you're a club and you trade your contracted players, put your shingle up and say we're not a very good club.

"So everyone wants to model Geelong, and on this front, I'll be modelling Geelong."

Ross Lyon from a month or two ago, you better be putting your money where your mouth is boss.

The bit that none of them are thinking about (because they're morons) is - what's the other option?

Just stay meek and go to the draft again, in a weak year where we have zero advantages? Front end even more contracts to get to the base level 95% of the salary cap? Cross our fingers that the kids we have are enough to give us performance over the next couple of years that lets us keep Nas?

They think very surface-level about this stuff unfortunately.
Great post

With how we have been over the last 12 months, dare I say a fair few clubs have went "gotta throw cash around"

And if you are a club that thinks you even have a small chance to get a player, have a plan for it and then go for it.

He was just telling the Cats if you want our contract player you’re going to pay our price for the contracted player.

Our draft hand will be interesting. I feel like we might be asking Gold Coast for something back later?

We have 7, 49 & 64.

7 for Flanders leaves us only with 49 & 64.

If we don’t trade Marshall first Geelong’s first this year it’s really curious to see what we do to have currency for Ryan, something late for Aleer (unless he’s DFA) and enough points for Fincher plus drafting a 2nd player with a rookie upgrade.

Yep.
We’ve literally been telling anyone who’ll listen what our plan is for the last 4-5 years and still nobody is listening/absorbing.
Can understand it from room-temp Big Footy posters, but not from the media. It’s pathetic.
For once we did have a cunning plan.

Over value for a 30 year old ruck. Geelong won’t do it.
So he plays for St Kilda and they can pick up Harry Boyd as a DFA.

We owe Geelong nothing and they are going after one of our best contracted players as evidenced by multiple top half dozen or so finishes in our B&F.

What irks me is we'll cop it about his value now but then when he's winning games for them it will be, god he was a steal for Geelong... what a genius pick up, they've done it again yada yada yada

Media is just big footy posters gone pro.

The football landscape has changed. In the past the Hawks and Cats have kept premiership lists together by getting them to accept unders. Those days might be over.
Clubs are going to be offering $500k extra per year to contracted players. It will make it hard to knock back.

The only reason we are even entertaining this trade is because of the possibility of getting something good back, otherwise it's absolutely not worth it.

TDK is an upgrade on Marshall, but that doesn't mean we dont want him to stay a Saint and provide valuable presence upfront as well as be that 2nd ruck in his declining years.

All well and good if he wants out, but if the deal doesn't favour us for an in-demand and in-contract experienced ruckman, he sees out his contract. We are entitled to seek valuable compensation. It's got nothing to do with us telling him to explore options; this does not equal wanting to get shot of him, this means maximising his value as well as helping him extend his status as number one ruck a couple more years.

The club, teammates and fans would be rapt if he stayed.

Geelong want him right now, clearly - how much remains to be seen.

And as much as I like Moose, do we want to sign him for 3 years which is apparently what the Demons have on the table?
Moose is a back up ruck, they go through the merry go round.

If Moose can get 3 then good luck to him. Dees use him as a stop gap from when Gawn goes to the next guy.

Then traded to the next club needing a mature body ruck.

I'd be more ok with a future first and hope for Geelong to fail next year. Won't be too much different - am always cheering for their downfall. Still, feels like Geelong would be getting yet another gun player in another trade period and yet again cheaply. There is nothing that would get on my nerves more than to get scammed by Geelong FC
