2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

I don't really get why anyone would be surprised that Marshall is getting traded. Hopefully we are holding out for a good deal but as soon as he requested he was gone.
Don't think anyone is surprised by the trade at all
Absolutely understandable that he & Geelong are a good fit.
It's not about them though
We call the shots.
Whats best for us.
Don't gift them anything.

Keeler is not a ruck - he's a 5 minute a qtr fill in at best - not someone you can rely on to give you 4 or 5 solid games in a row if your first ruck gets injured.

No way we win games if we have to rely he or Dodson to play as a first ruck for 4 or 5 games in a row.

If Marshall and Heath both go we will be looking for another short term back up ruckman for insurance purposes - and that's good list management not "list clogging".

As an example playing Boyd over Heath would have had absolutely no affect on game results, and given the quaility of ruckman available it would be the same next year regarding Dodson. Playing Aleer in the ruck who has an incredible leap would be a better option than a gap filler.

I suspect the club is keen to shed Steele for some Cap flexibility. Maybe not this year but next year. And you can only imagine his value will be lower next year, being 1 year older and after a year of less midfield time
What are the odds he could be a slightly less spectacular Dangerfield at 31/32? (12-15 senior games, fwd/a bit on ball)?

I cannot like this one enough Doc.

Absolutely Brillant.

I have watched it about 20 times.

And pizzed myself just as often.

Well played.

Well there ya go campaigners, Boss man Carl has answered a few questions there:

* Ro is wanted and required by us. He is the one who asked for trade. We have spoken to Cats out of respect to Ro

* Steele is wanted, club just told him out of respect he wouldn’t be in midfield plans and gave its blessing to explore a trade.

* Cal Wilkie has signed on for an extension of 2 more years

* Don’t need any traded out to keep the $ down in the SC

* Don’t expect any more then the 5 players to come in at this stage

* Ross isn’t taking on the FULL role of Mission’s. It has been spread across others at club also

* Various scenarios have been calculated with Salary cap that allows us to consider any player that becomes available

* 17,000 NAS memberships are being worked through. (It sounds like club are doing due diligence on how they are handling those)

ST KILDA coach Ross Lyon has a "strong preference" for Rowan Marshall to remain at the Saints, despite the ruck requesting a move to Geelong.

Marshall officially requested a trade to the Cats on Friday, just hours after Tom De Koning's move from Carlton to the Saints became official.

The 29-year-old has two years still to run on his deal at the Saints, and CEO Carl Dilena says the club’s position is clear.

"Our preference is to keep Rowan," Dilena said on Continental Tyres AFL Trade Radio.

"It was never our call, he's asked for (a trade) and out of respect for him, we've had a bit of dialogue with Geelong.

"If I had to bet on it, I'm not sure it would happen.

"Ross as coach, his strong preference is to have him at the club. He loves him as a player (and) he knows the role he would be able to play next year. That'd be our position there.

"This is my personal opinion ... you never say never to anything. If there was the world's best ever trade deal offered, you'd have to consider it. You have to do what's right for the club.

"But from a senior coach perspective, Ross has a clear preference. We'll weigh everything up when we get towards the end of the period and see what's in the best interests of the club, but at this stage it's Rowan staying with us.” – Martin Smith

Our current trade period assult is built on our strong drafting over the last few years.

Players on our who were 22 and under this year (some will be 23 by next season) who we have drafted and who have already debuted:

  1. NWM (86 games)
  2. Windhager (75 games)
  3. Owens (72 games)
  4. Caminiti (56 games)
  5. Philipou
  6. Wilson
  7. Garcia (2025 rising star nom)
  8. Boxhall (2025 rising star nom)
  9. Tauru
  10. Travaglia
  11. Dodson
  12. Hastie
  13. O'Connel
  14. Keeler
  15. Collard
  16. Heath
  17. Schoenmaker
The first three are already locked in as senior players in our team. Pou and Wilson have both had down seasons, but fully expect them to be long term players. Tauru looks like a star. Dodson, huge potential. Trav, Hastie, O'Connel, Keeler, Collard, have all played solid AFL level games, although stilll inconsistant and need to keep improving. IMO Heath is a late developer and will play a fair bit more AFL, albeit at another club. Schoenmaker could be a bust at this stage but may still get another chance.

I would say with some confidence that minimum 8-12 of those guys will still be playing AFL footballl when they are aged 25/26, which is a great success rate. For comparison, the only guys on our a current AFL list who were under 22 in 2021, who we drafted are King, Clark and Byrnes (Byrnes is 24 and realistically may not make it to the 25/26 age bracket).

Re trading out our 1st round draft pick this year, I am 100% totally fine with it as long as we go back to the draft next year so we don't end up with a big age gap in our list like we have had for a long time. When the current crop are all 26 we need to make sure we have another group of good kids coming through.
Good to see Owens will play game 100 in the grand final next year ;)

Looking forward to "the world's best ever trade deal offered".

Sure is a lot of people arguing with some posts I can't see...

Think we sit back and watch the carnage unfold for a couple days. Get Aleer, Ryan and JDG late Tuesday.

Grab popcorn for Wednesday to see Trac/Oliver/Merrett shit show go down.

Suck on that Mackie…

Have had enough of Geelong.

You want a contracted player, you pay slightly overs.

Saints should say don’t waste our time, we have other trades to complete.
