2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

How does it make it worse?

If you don’t have a player to trade to gain a second rounder or a club who needs thirds/fourths to match bids - how are they easy to accumulate?
If the gap is small then it makes it worse. If you don’t have it, you organise it - there would be other ways than purely a F2 (if GwS wouldn’t accept absolutely any other comparable thing, then fair, that’s on them). Like Freo did by shuffling picks around to get one that worked for McVee.

But leaving that aside - hope it’s because there’s something else happening, whether it’s Heeney, Humphrey or Bont.

Mmmm .This is an unfortunate situation for Leek. Moreover, the look of the Saints to the comp, future players and player Managers.
Now this is areal difficult job to negotiate,no question, but looks really simliar to the Jy Caldwell Brad Crouch deal.
Heres a few examples from recent years we had players wanting to join us,but didn’t for various reasons.
Ivan Soldo.
Tristan Xerri.
Jy Caldwell.
Leek Alleer.
Mitch Brown,
Probably a couple more too.
Good teams just get it done ,if we want to be a destination club ,these trades get done .
Did any of these stop TDK, JSOS, Ryan and Flanders wanting to come to us?

Short memories. We all move on. Other clubs have done the same.
The Cats are about to do it to Marshall.

There’s value, and there’s value and it takes two to tango.

According to Bartel we offered the F2 but wanted picks back and they said no.

So we walked.

I'm not going to lose my mind when Saints haven't even had a chance to respond, but think list spots are the main reason - assuming Caminiti must be upgraded.

Cats and Saints been calling each others bluff.

Cats knew we had to move on another contracted player to have the list spots for our 5 trade-ins and for the minimum 3 picks at the ND. All senior list spots.

We have tried to move on Steele without any interest in an attempt to retain Marshall. Hasn't happened.

Cats digging heels in, so our response is to hold a contracted Marshall. To facilitate this, we need to shed Aleer.

We do this, Cats get the message move on to Curnow.

Hopefully we find out why.

Its not a case of trade cost. We'd just walk him to the PSD then as he's contracted.

There's way more too it.

FYI pretty sure they manage tauru as well
Just had a look at their website. The “talent” section, Tauru isn’t listed but is plastered all over the page. From what I can see, apart from AFLW players, they have 4 recently delisted AFL players on there + Lefau from
Richmond - i have no idea who he is. Plus Derksen and Aleer.

If Tauru is indeed with centimetre perfect global, I’d suggest he may well consider an alternative player manager.

Absolute tin pot organisation.

Aleer’s manager with a Trump-like tweet.

“Clubs have rung me and said ‘it’s a disgrace, what have they done?’. They’re all saying it “it’s a disgrace”. This has to be the worst back out of a deal in the history of deals!”
Idiots saying, "what will this do to St Kilda's reputation as trade partners?" Lol

Why don't you ask West Coast and Gold Coast what our reputation as trade partners is?

Also guys, can we please drop this idea that the poor old saints are picked on by the media. If any other club did this, the response would be the same because its pretty unusual.

Every board you see the same rubbish that tge media are out to get them. There are 18 fan bases that think Damo and Kane hate their clubs in particular.

Melbourne literally did the same thing earlier in the week

Other way around.

Caldwell bailed within 24 hours of us signing Crouch or Crouch nominating us I forget the details.
Yeh that’s definitely the opposite of what I got told. Anyway.

The bed wetters are out in force tonight. I hope you are all equally appalled for every player that doesn’t get where they nominated. I suppose most don’t get to find out until the trade period expires, rather than have a week to sort something else out. Of course it may still happen, via PSD, via new picks coming to pass or, via GWS reducing their ask.

Sure I feel sorry for the bloke, a bit, but the desperation to blame ourselves is soooo strong it is, quite frankly, disappointing given all we have achieved so far.
The nuance and detail makes this a slightly different case to pretty much every other one I can think of.

I’m certainly not saying all the blame is with us but it looks horrendous for us right now and we’re doing nothing to defend ourselves.

Of the 5 we were linked to, Aleer was the one I didn't really inderstand.
I wouldn't be too worried about dropping out of the race. Once we nailed the other 4, and resigned who we wanted, Marshall looks like staying, maybe the salary cap looks pretty well done.

Funnily enough I was never all that sold on Aleer either, especially after we got JSOS.

Still seems poorly handled

The more I think about it. It is 100% this.

We literally have gotten all our likely trades done with 6 days left. Managers and clubs would be thinking Saints get things done!
