2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

Didn't realise we were the first team to ever back out of a negotiation.
From my understanding you guys spent a long time trying to convince Aleer to leave GWS and join your club. He initially rebuffed your approach, but you kept going with offers of big money and opportunity and you told him how much you loved him as a player etc…

On the back of constant aproach’s, you convinced him to come, so on the back of this Aleer rejected the GWS offer and obviously didn’t entertain offers from any other clubs that may have come his way.

A contract term was obviously discussed, and it would have also been clear what was required from a trade value standpoint.

The Saints should at least be honest with Aleer and not give some BS story about not being able to find a pick to get the deal done.

Cal Twomey said at the start of the week that Aleer could be available as a DFA.
Now GWS want a future second round pick???

Something doesn’t add up

Well hang on a minute… maybe this does add up. If we sign Leek as a DFA or pick him up in the draft, does that mean old mate from Centimetre Perfect Plonker management doesn’t get his bonus maybe..?????

Melbourne literally did the same thing earlier in the week
Melbourne wanted to trade for Derkson last year, GWS said he wasn't available.

This year he's uncontracted and Melbourne were considering him but chose not to sign him as a free agent. Entirely different situation.

So is a contracted players like Merret desperately seeking a trade to a contender.

These false equivalences are nuts.

Lets see how it all plays out, plenty of water to go under the bridge.

But the cognitive dissonance going on is pretty insane.

We literally have gotten all our likely trades done with 6 days left. Managers and clubs would be thinking Saints get things done!
There’s certainly an aspect of burning player managers that is real.

Pickering spoke about essentially telling Essendon to go **** themselves over bungling the Dunkley deal.

How big an impact that has is definitely up for debate. It doesn’t seem to linger much but it’s a real thing.

If you’ve watched that doco Amazon prime did player managers seem like the most arrogant morons since real estate agents so I doubt the list managers care about their opinions too much.

Also guys, can we please drop this idea that the poor old saints are picked on by the media. If any other club did this, the response would be the same because its pretty unusual.

Every board you see the same rubbish that tge media are out to get them. There are 18 fan bases that think Damo and Kane hate their clubs in particular.
Melbourne literally just did it with Derksen and no one cared

Edit: I got Sully'd

Not sure if its just me, but IDGAF about the Aleer stuff. Wow player managers and nuffies on social media are having a cry? Boohoo.

IT IS LIST SPOTS!

ALEER DIRECTLY LINKED TO THE MARSHALL TRADE, AND THE REASON WHY WE PUT THE SPOTLIGHT ON STEELE!
It probably is, that doesn’t really matter to the current narrative. Best case is we can’t count?

100% this.

I’m fine if people wanna just say “oh well, we’re doing what’s best for us, **** the collateral damage”, that’s fine.

I can’t actually think of another situation that mirrors this.

Bobby Hill not getting to the bombers was tough to watch (they showed the last day of that on that Amazon doco) and there’s been others that have had a bit of fallout but Aleers managers response, us walking with a week to go.

That’s all pretty unprecedented and very difficult to defend.

But the manager said we haven’t told Aleer…

My completely unfounded working theory is that SOS/Gubby played hard ball and gave an ultimatum, GWS declined and spread the “walking away” story.

If we did pull the pin, I would expect SOS/Gubby would’ve had the decency to at least call Aleer first. If not, it’s pretty bloody ordinary
Most player Managers make it clear that you are to deal directly with them

*allegedly

And guess what? That’s the first I’ve heard of it.
Obviously got very little outraged airtime.

Every board you see the same rubbish that tge media are out to get them. There are 18 fan bases that think Damo and Kane hate their clubs in In a way I'm glad this has happened. Sam Mitchell has puffed the Hawks chest out with his 3/4 scowl, 1/4 sly smile since he got there. Playing the begging 10th finish pauper has annoyed me for years. If we are doing what we are now we will make the odd error. Mitchell doesn't give a flying about his and his club's errors.
The Hawks dont give a flying. They've burnt more players over the years than any other club. They then sell the "family" club shtick. Mitchell's 3/4 scowl, 1/4 smirk tells you all you need to know about them. I want us to be more like them.

Hopefully all the events of the past few months is our line in the sand for a new St Kilda where we can stop complaining and can lose the explaining.

The fact that Aleer's manager had no idea going into trade week after his player nominated a club that had other players lined up says to me there is one large source of incompetence.

We could just delist one/two/all of Byrnes, Arie or Jones.

Not sure list spots were the reason.
No, it's factoring them into the equation as well.

IT IS LIST SPOTS!

Think about it, the reason we have publicly been flexible on Steele.

How Marshall matters have transpired today.

By my calculations, we still need to trade or delist at least one more contracted player to take the minimum 3 picks to the ND.

OUTS
Senior: Webster, Cordy, Heath, Jones, Byrnes, Schoenmaker (6)
Rookie: McLennan, Boyd (2)

INS
Senior: TDK, JSOS, Flanders, Ryan, Fincher, Caminiti, Draftee (7)
Rookie: Draftee, Draftee, Draftee (3)

With Boyd and McLennan delisted and Caminiti upgraded, we will need to draft 3 rookies to make up the minimum 4.

The two Irish lads are both Cat B.

The only thing that would change this would be if McLennan was upgraded to the senior list last year, but I haven't found any confirmation of this...

I feel like we're showing we're minimal fuss with the first 4 deals however gws we're not budging on the second rounder and we no longer really want the aleer deal quite as much after Silvani , salary cap issues and aleers form so we blame gws and back out.
Shows we don't **** around from our original offers. Of course if he was a star it would probably be a different story. Also the fact that his manager isn't a big name we probably do as we wish more than being pressured by potential future deals from that management group.
I don't think it really affects future deals
