2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Looking at list spots by looking at the INS and OUTS;

Webster -> TDK
Cordy -> JSOS
Boyd -> Flanders
McLennan -> Ryan
Heath ->
Jones ->
Byrnes ->
Shoemaker ->

If everyone without a contract goes, it still leaves us with 4 empty spots while keeping Marshall and Steele. This presumes Carrol has a contract despite that not being confirmed anywhere. So we would have had list room for Aleer if that trade did happen.

And before the 'main list, rookie list' discussion starts, there are so many ways to move players between the lists that it does not matter where one is counted for the sake of this simple exercise.
Add Fincher for Heath yeah?
So for mine
Delist: Byrnes, Jones, Schoey
Rookie- Voss & Wanganeen
Get someone else in the trade period

I'd rather listen to Gubby than Delina
Let's land another fish
Even more cash to splash with Aleer out of the frame.

Or weve decided to stash the cash & go pinch Butters next year.

32 on senior list, down from 38
Losing Jones, Byrnes, Cordy, Schoenmaker, Webster, Heath

2 on rookie list, down from 4
Losing Boyd, McLennan

2 on Cat B rookies unchanged (OConnell, Armstrong) - think the rule is if you have 2 x Cat B rookies one has to be on your Cat A rookie list

---‐----‐-----------

Gaining TDK, JSOS, Flanders, Ryan through trade

36/3/1

----------------------

Need to draft 3 at the ND (including a Caminiti upgrade from rookie list)

39/2/1

---‐------------------

Need to then draft 2 x rookies

39/4/1

Gives us our 44 player list
I was incorrect in needing to delist Carroll or Dow - we have a full contingent based on out current trade haul (4 players) and our minimum 3 picks at the National Draft.

The Senior and Rookie List does matter, because you need to retain a minimum 3 spots on your Senior List for the National Draft.

Unless you are willing to delist a contracted player on your senior list with the commitment to re-rookie them, which we have seen in the past.

or on the other hand as a (sadly missed) old mate who got sacked as a national recruitment manager would say. I did tell ya. Our club's recruitment of indigenous players shouldn't paper over their pathway. If this opens up pathways then it's not "very" strange.

From my understanding you guys spent a long time trying to convince Aleer to leave GWS and join your club. He initially rebuffed your approach, but you kept going with offers of big money and opportunity and you told him how much you loved him as a player etc…

On the back of constant aproach’s, you convinced him to come, so on the back of this Aleer rejected the GWS offer and obviously didn’t entertain offers from any other clubs that may have come his way.

A contract term was obviously discussed, and it would have also been clear what was required from a trade value standpoint.

The Saints should at least be honest with Aleer and not give some BS story about not being able to find a pick to get the deal done.
Mate he has an offer with GWS and he has a week to find somebody else if he wants. Even if you assume it’s all our fault, it is nowhere’s near as bad as you want it to be.

What is the reason?

Strange day, thought we'd walk away early then come back later for Aleer. Media posturing and rage bait is one thing, but I'm genuinely shocked at Aleer and his managers reaction. I think they've blown this up prematurely to a point of no return.

He will probably be a 'good' player, but I feel more comfortable about walking away rather than getting him.

I believe the Aleer contract unsettled Wilkie, with no runs on the board it was a big roll of the dice. I hope we are all out.

I for one would much rather Jack Steele or Rowan Marshall in our 23 next year, than Leek Aleer. And I'd definitely rather a tall back 3 of Wilkie, JSOS, Tauru, going forward, than any combination of that with Aleer and without one of the others.

It's probably a few pages back, but do we think that Oliver nominating GWS impacted the Aleer trade? Although I can't imagine GWS' future third or whatever is so critical that they need to hang onto it....

Nah, the more opportunities there are for populations who may typically have a rougher time of reaching the top level than your standard caucasian Victorian private school boy, the better IMO

Just ideally not in a way that compromises the draft, which this would not, as it's a rookie spot I believe?.
So I wonder whether that would cover Tex Wanganeen?
He seems to be the forgotten man when people look at list spots.
Did we promise him a spot? Or a train on with the opportunity for a rookie listing?

I dont think a future 2nd is unreasonable. But sure, let's say it is overs.

Maybe GWS were willing to accept a 3rd in a few days time, or maybe they would have been willing to add a 3rd for our 4th.

If GWS were asking for a first round pick and refused to listen to anything else, maybe you'd have a point.

Your only possible backing that GWS share responsibility is because you don't want to accept your team might have dogged Aleer.
Give me a spell mate… a dog act would be to string this along til next Wednesday then walk away.

Leek has 6 days to find a new home or return to the Giants.

We’ve actually done the right thing by him by calling it off now.

I’m a bit disappointed as I would have loved to see what Ross & Boris could do with his athleticism & untapped ability.
