2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

Everybody here would be thrilled and amazed and quite honestly could not believe it if they played professional football.
Ohhh so it's all about relativity is it?

So if you sell your house and out an offer for a new home. The bloke buying your house pulls out at the last minute and all your plans fall apart.

"Oh well, I'm just so thrilled to be a home owner in this housing market. How lucky am I to have a house to sell? What a great day it is".

Edmund literally says he doesn’t know if Geelong walked away and then pivoted to Curnow.

So there are a lot of “facts” that aren’t out in the open.

I’m aware of the process and our actions have aligned entirely and consistently with our behaviour the last few trade periods. Walking away from under deals and overpays.

GWS value Aleer as a second round pick. Which is there right. We value him as a third.

If the industry thinks a second round pick for Aleer is fair. I assume North or the Dogs or any other side needing a tall defender will swoop in.

Your defense is that one person has reported they dont know who walked away... Thats pretty weak.

This is all opinion and optics of which

  • We were reported as the hardest club to deal with
  • We have been reported as walking away, with a week to go, from a player we comitted to
  • There is absolutely no reporting that Geelong walked away from the roma deal (your point above doesnt say they did).

To be clear, i have no doubt weve done the right thing by us, i have no real issue with us walking away from said deal but im also not naive enough to pretend that weve not created a story for the media and other clubs to whack us with. Which is exactly whats happened.

The smarter play for PR would have been to go along with the Giants on the Aleer deal (whether they back down and that gets done or not, if its not through by deadline its always reported as "both clubs tried") and the same with Roma.

That we havent done that is the whole reason there is any story here at all. Thats a choice we made, no one else.

The better defense of this is "saints first, we dont care about the rest" not "well this happens all the time, Geelong even did it here" cause thats just not whats being reported.

Oh he’s in shock is he? ****ing diddums

He’s probably in shock because he’s got the big brained operator from Prestige Worldwide as his manager in his ear.

His statement sounded like the over the top ravings of a man already 3 celebratory bags deep into his trade commission only to realise the rugs been pulled out from under him and now C63 Benz contract is looking awfully expensive.

This is really good gear. Chuckling my ass off at work.

I find this very bizarre.

Didn't we say we'd been talking to GWS well aged of Trade Week and that both parties were relatively happy. Surely a deal would have been discussed? Has GWS upper their price, needing additional pick to get Oliver perhaps?

And the board intervention doesn't sit right. Maybe just an excuse from our side?? The board knows we had 3 trades to do, and didn't have a 2nd this year, so future picks were always going to be involved.
Listening to Jason McCartney on trade radio GWS seem pissed off at Saints.

The only reason that would be is if they were happy to offload Aleer. Otherwise surely you would be happy to keep a required player

I’m not defending the club. I’m very neutral. It happens. It happened to us with Marshall and Geelong.

All I’m doing is literally pointing out to any one who identifies as a Helen Lovejoy on the matter is that you don’t have just accept another clubs terms, in the same way we are being shown they don’t need to accept ours.

We have completed 3 other trades and worked with agents on a further 2 deals without any issues. Not it’s how bad are the saints and leaving a player hanging.

Blah. Blah blah.

It’s evidently not true. We have been consistent in approach. We walked on Soldo. We walked from Kemp. We walked from Peatlings salary demands.

We are very clear on values and returns. Nothing we have done now or in recent history suggests we are trying to ream clubs on deals. We are just seeking fairness.

Not a single club will think Aleer is worth a second round pick. That’s effectively what Geelong rates Marshall - when we have asked for a future first that will translate into a traditional first round pick.

He also said we should have ditched TDK instead of Aleer
He’s questioning why we would ditch Leek when he’d have longevity bc Marshall will retire in 2 years - but THEN he questions why we need Tdk in the next breath.

Truly, the man is an idiot.

They came to the table with a ridiculous ask and just assumed we’d talk them down and find the middle ground.

We didn’t because we’re not here to F spiders.

We walked, the management sooked, so now the Giants have to take him back or it looks absolutely horrendous for them.

They weren’t planning on that salary or list spot being used.

In short, FAFO.

People using Derkson as a comparable situation have finally shown to be why trade radio is a thing.

I never want to hear the muppets on there criticised on this board again. This take is as bad as suggesting we should have passed on Carlisle and drafted Gresham with pick 5 anyway.
Very interesting though to see that 2 of the 7 players Dylan Smith manages are Aleer & Derksen.

Both backflips by clubs recruiting those players.

You know what. I’m in shock. I’m in shock at how ****ing shite we’ve been my entire waking life! And I have PTSD from the few times we were any good but still ****ing cooked the goose! So why can’t the media report on my problems!! Fair ****s I’m still in shock right now from the WCE game this season!! Where’s my ****ing sympathy!!

...I hope the Club absolutely 100% continues with the ruthless approach, as it’s the only way we’ll reach the ultimate glory.

And don’t be kidding yourselves thinking the other successful Clubs are any better. They’re not. They’re worse. They’ve just learnt to hide it better and it’s not as noticeable with them as they’re expected to be campaigners + half of them have the media on side. When we do it, it’s like the runt cousin getting getting a few clips in a fight he should lose. People are surprised, amused, but also want to see him put back in his place. People love the status quo, it’s protects their privileged status. Well **** THE STATUS QUO!!

Ehh no biggie, everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame and any opportunity to rant about a rival team with the moral high ground, which look they might actually have in this case (but only cause he committed to us so long ago)

but im just glad this got down with ages left in trade period, it'll all blow over by the time it ends and it'll certainly blow over by next season because aleer wont be able to get a gig at the giants

What doesn't make sense is, clubs do fail to get trades done all the time that is well known. What is extremely unusual is to walk away half way through trade period. Even if our interest had cooled, why wouldn't we just hold firm on our original offer F3 or whatever and if GWS didn't take it before deadline no harm no foul. And end of the day he's OOC so maybe he walks and we get him for nothing. It's just a bizarre strategy. I'm not at all concerned about not getting him (don't rate him as a player) but I would love the club to explain why they've played it this way.
Sing it with me....

Because we dont have the......

My god the F****** whinging from GWS

Yes, there are other mechanisms
Yes, we can trade 2 years into the future
Yes, we could have kept negotiating

None of that factors in our desire to onyl send a 3rd and that is it. Flanders went for a 1st rounder, if GWS think Aleer is worth just one round behind that, they are already smoking whatever Oliver has sold them

Two way street, not a matter of us "paying up"

Harsh for Aleer. Guess what, life is hard. Get a better manager

Without being rude this is an entirely myopic and short sighted view

I 100% don’t mind either way but in such a closed industry negotiation is the norm. Shutting up shop and declaring a week to go that we’re no longer interested is pretty poor.

If we kept stringing it along and then declared we couldn’t get it done the optics are better and we potentially could have walked him to the PSD.

Sometimes you have to **** spiders and not be abrasive. I don’t mind GWS being pissed off with us cause like they said it should have been a straightforward trade but it sounds like we were looking for an excuse to call it off and we found one.
Declaring that we are walking away does multiple things.

A) Gives Aleer time to find another home if GWS don’t lower their asking price

B) Tells GWS that we aren’t fluffing around, so come and make a deal or don’t.

Just because a player commits to he club doesn’t mean a trade has to be done, especially if the club has an unrealistic ask or is asking for something the other club can’t give.

Not everything has to be friendly

Stav, none of this is relevant to the narrative, which is literally all that im pointing out.
