2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

1.5m guaranteed over 4 years. So guaranteed 375k with incentives to reach 750k i assume. Definitely worth a 3rd rounder.
The only guarantee is a signed contract.
And even then, players break them. So ….it’s unfortunate for him, but that’s life.
Appears to me GWS were very happy to shift him and are not so happy it didn’t happen.

They sound annoyed it didn't happen.

Damo thinks we overpaid for flanders, doesn't rate our ins, but also reckons it's a failure if we don't make week 2 of finals next year. Wonder how those two opinions coexist
They NEED the storyline

If we fail - lay the boots in
If we succeed, they will forget all they said now and cheer for us

I still cant understand how using your salary cap and bringing in players is a risk but ive given up looking for logic in the AFL world

The behaviour from geelong with Marshall isn't the same as our behaviour with aleer.

Marshall is contracted so there's an expectation and understanding that the trade won't happen.

Aleer is uncontracted so there's the expectation that if a trade won't happen he can still get to the club.

We've completely given up when there were still avenues to acquire him. It wasn't about the trade falling through. We have completely readjusted our want for him.
Beg to differ. There was a clear expectation that Marshall would be traded. Contracted or no is semantics because Aleer has an offer from GWS. He's just chosen not to accept it. Would be different if Aleer was OOC and unwanted by GWS. Marshall is contracted. Aleer has an offer. Up to him if signs it or holds out for a better offer. If the offer is withdrawn, too bad. People miss out on jobs because the landscape changes all the time. Aleer still has a $300k a year job if he wants it. Poor guy.

Who knows the genuine truth, hopefully it comes out soon. But the reporting is that we've completely pulled out our interest and will not try to trade for him. That isn't the same as our offer not being met no matter how you spin it, otherwise we'd keep the offer of a future third/fourth on the table for the rest of the period and see if GWS eventually cave and accept it, as well as trying to walk Aleer to the draft as had been previously reported. Instead, we've completely slammed the door shut (according to reports) after saying days ago we were confident it'd get done.

Many here just seem to be adopting a **** you attitude towards the entire rest of the AFL and the media, which is fine, but let's not pretend this is common practice. If we still wanted Aleer, we'd still be trying to honour his nomination and our contract offer it's as simple as that.
How about that we were shocked that Gws requested an F2, when we were actually thinking an F3 or 4 would do it easily.
Like people in here, we had possibly started to think after the Jsos trade, do we even need this guy.
Pulled out with 6 days to go, plenty of time for Aleer's manager to mediate another solution.
Don't need to have that conversation with Aleer, his manager is paid for that.

This his “renowned” sliding doors article?

I loved his piece on soon to be restricted free agent Zak Butters leaving for minimal compo. Tell me you don’t bother researching without telling me

They work because... If Essendon had have done what we have done, Flanders would be a value pick, the ins would be all high class and finals would be nice, but not required because they would need time to gell.

Go figure...

I fell asleep at a Billy Connolly concert because I couldn't understand a ****ing word he said, been going out with the wife for about 4 months at that stage hahaha

6 days to make a life changing decision when your options have likely been limited.

Everyone on here would be filthy if that happened to them.

Barrel is saying we offered a 2nd, but wanted something back. If a 3rd or 4th round pick is the hill we've chosen to die on, thats concerning.

I actually am expecting to hear more to the story. I don't think we would have been dicks for no reason, its only the presently available information that suggests we're in the wrong. I'm open minded though.
In the real world, people are made redundant every day, with no warning, and no feasible options of alternative employment readily at hand. They also don't necessarily have the savings in the bank to survive on that can be derived from an AFL salary in the multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.

I'm sure Leek will survive this situation with minimal stress...

Now that Marshall is staying and any SDK chance is out the window, why don't we have Aleer nominate for the preseason draft and we take him from there? Assuming we have the cap space, feels like the best option in terms of reputation with managers, sticking to playing hard ball with trades and we'd get Aleer for nothing

Ro's a required player so the onus is on Geelong to make an offer that's hard to pass up on
Geelong are incapable of proposing compelling offers to trade contracted players.

They just expect everything to be accepted on their terms.

I hope we refuse to negotiate with them about Marshall.
