2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Here's something that a little birdie told me...

Saints give Hawks future 2026 Rd 1 pick and Jack Steele to Essendon

Saints get Cam McKenzie and Essendon’s future 2026 Round 2 pick

Bombers give Merrett to Hawks and future 2026 round 2 pick to Saints

Bombers get Hawks 2025 pick 1 and 2026 future pick 1 (Saints), Jack Steele and one of Jack Scrimshaw or Mitch Lewis

Hawks give future 2025 Rd 1 pick, 2026 Rd 1 pick (Saints), Jack Scrimshaw or Mitch Lewis

Hawks get Zach Merrett

This source is very reliable but has told me deals are fluid and changing all the time
this will be tough to get done, can't see either of scrimshaw or lewis (or any other hawk that is in the 22) agreeing to go the bombers

I know we'll be crucified in the media if we don't make finals next year, but I wouldn't be gung ho about trading our F1.

If GWS get Clarry and GC get Trac they'll be better teams. If Hawks get Zerrett they will be a serious premiership contender.

Freo might stumble but of their top 10 B&F this year, the oldest is about to turn 29 and most are right in their prime.

Pies look vulnerable to dropping off but that's about it. Geelong just seems to find a way to stay up.

My gut feel is we are done and Roma and Jack stay. Any deviation from that would have to be a Hollywood offer, which seems unlikely. Aleer is not, never, ever coming to us now. He'd ask for 8 FRDP just to annoy us. I wish him well wherever he lands, some of the pile on here about him as distinct from GWS or his manager is pretty unfair

SDK coming and Butler leaving are BF hypotheticals and the only reason they may have got air outside of here is that media types read these forums too.

Not popular with people who want us to do a trade every hour to be cool, but dont throw your toys out of the cot if we just sit on our hands between now and 7.30pm Wdnesday

Tony suggests your gut is just reacting to bad sushi.

Love the CMac trade

Lock it in asap

Carlton gives Cory Durdin (23 yo small forward that kicked 14 goal this year), pick 26
Carlton gets Ainsworth (28 yo old small forward who kicked 21 goals this year), pick 67 which is worthless

So basically Carlton swapped Cory Durdin and pick 26 for a slightly improved but older small forward. Sounds to me they overpaid. If they got Ben Long (44 goals in 2025) from the deal, then it would have been a good deal.

We got Flanders a game changing goal kicking inside mid in the mould of Lachie Neale (would average 30 possessions a game next season) for pick 7, which is essentially a pick 12 after FA compensation and NGA/father son bids.
Ainsworth is a massive upgrade despite the stats.

Carlton’s small forwards have been trash for years.

We need to push back against the narrative of ‘saints must make finals in 2026’. The only reason that Purple and Corn are saying it is so they can bag us out and create more content if we don’t reach their expectation. We will make finals at a time of our choosing and don’t give a F about other peoples expectations. They want us to fail and implode. We are in this for the long haul. A sustainable rebuild.

He's fine, I just think we've gone past him - he's 29 next year and has started getting injured, with list spots tight I'm not sure he justifies his spot.
Maybe so, although dislocated elbow isn’t age related. But we can’t justify his position when we have no depth in this position, particularly given we are statistically average in forward pressure. This seems counterintuitive?

Christ, I’d hope we are making finals if Marshall and Steele are staying.

Think I may have missed something but can't be bothered going back, is Tony suggesting we're making a play for CMac?

I'd broadly agree with this.

I think that Adelaide and GC are potentially looking at a cool off year with a tougher draw along with Collingwood - people forget quickly they missed finals last year.

Fremantle should improve and if the Dogs sort out a few issues they are a very real top 4 threat too. Brisbane and Geelong will be there as always and if the Hawks add Merrett it's hard to see them falling.

Going to be a very competitive season.

I think most saints would pretty happy if we were done, but this sort of trade period only comes around very rarely if at all so I see no problem with getting a bit carried away, not like we usually have any opportunity to do so most of the time

Don’t want CMAC at all, especially if it’s for our future 1st. Jeez I hope that isn’t the mystery deal or whatever we have going on.

Seems like the SDK stuff is just bigfooty rumours. Rather keep Ro than any crap first rounder from Geelong.

Be stoked if we are finished and don’t lose anyone else, next week will be fun!

Seriously the self flagellation on here is epic.

The club like every other club enters trade week with a list of trades they want to get done and a wish list. Some trades are easier than others some you know you need to put the cash on the table like Flander and pick 7.

Before talks started and other clubs piled on we may have hoped to argue GC down maybe even receive a second coming back our way, that didn’t happen.

While this is going on the flip side is you’re fielding offers on your own players and some teams don’t want to play ball. They’re offering unders despite st Kilda holding the whip hand. This deal stalls and looks like it’s not happening, if it doesn’t you’re down a list spot and the pick/picks you planned to have aren’t there.

That’s the reality of trade week, now how in that scenario can a player and his manager claim to have a gauranteed deal with us or any other club. Put simply they don’t, at best they have an understanding that if things work out as we’d planned we’ll attempt to bring him to our club.

There are so many variables you can’t guarantee anything. Aleer nether had a guarantee and as 5th banana in order of importance if he couldn’t foresee this happening then he wasn’t paying attention and his manager must be a little a slow.

Have a look at the utter turmoil caused by teams trying to poach high profile contracted players only at this point in time to leave everyone hanging.

Yep we’re definitely the bad guys because the backup project players deal appears to be off the table. I’m not interested in could we have made this happen because of course we could. I’m interested in how teams are built, how priorities change, who wins and who loses. The afl couldn’t care less, they know there are always winners and losers, drama equals clicks and their burning oxygen out of season.

Exactly, I ride our clown show staff hard when they **** shit up but this is like having a melt down over a parking ticket when we usually write off the car drunk on a Saturday night.
