Shit haircuts aside. I think with the recent Nas signing at St Kilda has opened up a lot more money from Adelaide to go after Sam Draper a lot harder and this will have other role on effects throughout the draft in the upcoming weeks.
I would like to think we splash the money on retaining our current players.
Maybe pick up a ruck somewhere in the merry-go-round.

No. Offensive to the Irish. His name has a Mc in front, not an O'.
Good point BuntonRules! I knew those cultural sensitivity training modules would pay off. Technically then, and employing your impeccable logic, that would make it ok to call McStay a “Bampot” in front of goals? dlanod ?

Don't believe in paying ruckmen generally, don't think he's the sort of ruckman you pay, and he has a worse injury record than Oscar Allen.
Fair enough, considering how good our cap management has been for a while I’ll assume us signing him isn’t at the cost of losing anyone. I doubt the club would choose to bring him in over resigning guys like Starce and Ah Chee.

I also think the upgrade on position is probably bigger than just about anyone else we could get outside of a KPF which we’ve got Allen as well.

There's a difference between giving someone a gently ribbing, and abuse. As I mentioned in an earlier post, other than it being a play on his name, it's no different to the discussion on Joe Daniher being 50/50 from anywhere on the ground, or saying a player couldn't hit the side of a barn.

McSpray certainly didn't enter a common vernacular to my awareness (other than probably amongst a small group of posters here around 2019/2020 from a quick search). Dan McStay absolutely went through a period when he was an unreliable shot at goal. He knew it and worked on it and improved and that was also generally acknowledged.

For the record, this post is the first time I've ever used the term, and I'm happy to withdraw my defence if it if it was ever used to directly abuse the player.
Dan was a poor kick for goal early on as was 'Yipwood' but they worked at it which is something to admire. Rod marsh and Healy both dropped several catches on their first day of Test cricket. Marsh's drops probably lost the match but he became every one's favourite despite the kick names of 'Iron gloves' and 'Bacchus' short for 'back us up'.

I thought Bacchus was because of Bacchus marsh as in the little town between Ballarat and Melbourne?

Pretty sure i recall posters on here gloating about calling him McSpray at a game

And we all know one poster who tends to fixate on 1 individual in our team. Wouldn't be surprised if he was guilty of it
Are you fixating on me again?

Perhaps should have gone with McStrongMarkWhoIsImportantToStructureAndAlwaysTriesHisHeartOutButHasATendencyToMissSetShotsFrom30OutDirectlyInFront ?

Hardly rolls off the tongue…
GOLD!

If that rule was retroactively enacted a few posters here would be banned for years!
I think people should be retrospectively banned for repeatedly posting that Ryan Lester is only a “depth player” at best.

His turn around has been incredible, early days I thought he would be on the list for 3/4 years and wouldn’t be seen again. Mr Dependable now.

Draper call expected soon after Wednesday once their season finishes according to Inside Trading. Dons have also upped their offer to 5 years - matching the Crows/Brisbane offers.
The deal would run through to 2030 and is in line with the offers from the Crows and Lions, which has had Draper deciding between the three options for most of the season.
...
Draper, who turns 27 in September, is yet to make a call on his future but a decision is expected soon after Essendon's season finishes next week. – Callum Twomey

Most transparent ploy to up offers from us and Adelaide and get better FA compo but pls Sam, you WANT to stay at Essendon 🙏🙏🙏

For those who don’t want Draper, would love to know what your plan would be for the ruck list management going forward?
Oscar’s body is cooked and I’m half expecting him to hang up the boots at seasons end.
Fort has been super but is on the other side of 30.
Smith is not proven so not convinced he’s the future (doing enough to at least persist with).

What’s the forward plan?

I'm ok with Draper, but I've got my heart set on Max Gawn wanting out & a new club.

Eternal optimist.

There are always rucks looking to switch clubs for better opportunities

But if the club wants Draper I'll back them in

Maybe they had a look at how well the AFL kept their previous merger agreement commitments and decided that such guarantees were, shall we say, ephemeral...

Absolutely. Any 'promises' made to North by the AFL about number of games in Melbourne at various venues wouldn't have been worth the paper they were written on.

I am hoping we can find a delisted free agent or 2 to help with our backline depth. It's the area of the ground where we're thin. Fast small forwards would also be of interest.

It looks like Allen and possibly Draper are coming in which address other clear weakness in our list.

Fort, McInerney & Smith OOC 2026.
Fort turned 32 in August, and his age now matches his jumper number.

I hope the club stick to their original offer for Draper.
If he does not want to come to Brisbane to live and play with the Lions than let another club have him.
Keep the money offered to retain other players.
The salary cap is there to even things out, that's why premiers and top teams struggle to retain players.

Fort has been good in the last 3 games without Oscar and i would be happy to keep him in that role.

Your F/R concerns are warranted
Let's say Allen comes to Brisbane he can do some ruck relief.
I think using Allen and Hippy together could work.

I will be interested to see if they throw Gallop into the ruck v the Hawks for a couple of CBAs.
Probably not, but you never know as they have given him some ruck experience in the VFL.

If they remove the bounce and just throw the ball up around the ground without waiting for the rucks to get there, I can see more mobile talls playing a role similar to current rucks. If this came to pass, ZZ comes into calculations as ruck depth. Particularly if they move to a five player bench.

Talk about crapping on our players.. I always thought Fort been more than serviceable player.
Like Lester you can be serviceable and not a A grade player.

Started late so you expect he has 2-4 years left.
Smith body not been great with injuries who knows what his future holds.
Draper prob been worse although shown glimpses at AFL level.
and Oscar all reports almost broken.

Maybe we should look to get someone fit as a backup to Fort.
Been very lucky with Fort who always been there when needed.

With rule changes maybe coming you probably want to look at a ruck with good leg speed as well.
