I think a few here are going to be very disappointed when we trade Cal for a second rounder at best and a bag of chips. Last year was his peak... before and after have been average at best and if we had choices I'd suggest he would have been getting dropped in and out like he was for years.

Starc on the other hand was worth a late first until this year. Let's see what the concussion and the build up back to form has done to his value.

I get we want everything and to have to pay nothing but it won't pan out that way.

Oops. Sorry, Victorian here. :p
i have lived in Qld 30 years, if the State of Origin was played in my back yard I would draw the curtains!
Fair to say I have never acquired the taste for it and my Kayo subscription would disappear overnight if they didn't show AFL

I reckon he would slot in nicely if we could fit him in the cap and came at the right price. Best mates with Dunks too.
am aware of that watch their podcast, which is why I knew he plans to move up here when footy finishes for him, would he play wing or half back? wouldn't have thought he'd be a starting mid for us.

Attitude towards rugby league is about the only thing I'm aligned with Kane Cornes on. Could not give a flying duck.

I'm also a Queenslander and a Lions tragic but I always know where the Broncos are and who won the state of origin. I play a lot of golf so meet quite a few people out there on the course for 4 hours chit-chatting, Rugby League is by far the preferred game in Qld but some have AFL knowledge now. Looking at the most watched TV events for the first 6 months of this year, Australia Wide Audience, nothing to do with the AFL even rates in the top 100 Australia wide events watched. State of origin - was a great series - 1, 2 and 3. You can see where the NRL get their advertising revenue from with their ratings and with a $600 million boost from the Federal Government to bring New Guinea and another team attempting to make Perth home

Yes the AFL Grand final will make the top 10 when it's played.

I'm a huge fan of the Lions and the Broncos, don't really care about either sport outside of that. I rarely watch other games in either code unless its finals or I have nothing else on. In terms of being a fan of an actual comp, I LOVE the English Super League, its more like what league used to be when it was amazing.

I watch F!, ESL and NBA on Kayo, little of either AFL or NRL outside my two teams above as mentioned.

I can't split my love for Broncs and Lions, probably Broncs more but not by much.

Going to be very, very interesting to see what happens to player wages if the new FoxSports owners aren't as keen on niche sports at the arse-end of the world as what we'd hope they'd be.

I'm afraid Rip's right on this one, DANZ focuses on F.A. football, boxing, American sports, tennis, golf, motor sports etc, etc. They started in Europe and have since bought up rights across the world for programming they can sell, across the world. There isn't even a mention of AFL on their wiki page!

All these acquisitions have come at enormous cost, they were 1.4 billion in debt in 2023 and rising. At some point they will cull the number of sports they carry and how much they are willing to pay for them. AFL was a big part of Fox's portfolio, DANZ are probably unaware it exists.

More to the point DANZ has a gambling arm called, quite originally, DANZbet. Considering how much the AFL is in bed with current gambling companies DANZ will want their product to be front and center in any negotiations. History counts for very little come the next round of negotiations.

They could very well finish above us on the ladder (after finals are decided), which ruins their whole PSD schtick they have used in recent time.

Ah Chee isn't getting through to crows in PSD.
There will be a handful of clubs willing to poach him for nothing so crows won't even think about it.

i dont think ah chee is worth much more than neal-bullen really. people are dreaming if they think we are getting a first rounder.

Cal’s value is in the niche roles he plays in defensive tagging rebounding defenders + his ability to play forward, wing and defence.

If he isn’t playing these niche roles (eg defensive forward tagging or red time defending), his general form is wildly inconsistent.

A pick around 20-30 seems fair.

hes good and i have a lot of time for him but ultimately hes a role player who is out of contract and those types never attract a significant trade premium.

I’d like to keep Cal because I thought he was integral to our flag. But you can’t overpay for that type of role player.

If Lester plays next year then anything we get for Starce and Ah Chee I'd put that aside for next year draft or trade.

Spread out the list age profile a bit. We have players like Beecken, Brain waiting to play that half back role. Don't need an expensive, injured player like Ridley.

I respect where you’re coming from with this point because I’m a football romantic who wants to develop the players we draft into future players…the thing that makes me lean towards trusting the list management experts is that timing is everything - if we need a certain skillset now or next year and our development players are a maybe in 2 years then I understand why they’d opt to bring someone in

Where I’ve landed is that character and buy-in is more important than tenure…would anyone doubt that Lachie, Daniher or Dunkley haven’t deserved the opportunity we gave them? I think they paid us back many times over

If the Lions say Ridley is the guy they want, then I’ll back them in and live with consequences if things don’t turn out

I don't think a pick in the 20s in a weak draft is a significant trade premium. Nobody's saying he's a top 10 pick. Not even top 20.

If you're best 22 in a premiership side, I think the lowest value you could just about have would be in the late 20s.

Meh, I don’t think State of Origin is indicative of rugbaleeg more widely…it’s its own entity

It’s similar to suggesting that Melbourne Cup numbers mean that mainstream Australia supports horse racing more than [insert mainstream sport]

While I agree with your view - the reason I'm not crash hot on Ridley is it feels a bit like player initiated and came out of nowhere. If Lions were after him, I feel we would do a longer courtship / due diligence like what happened with Oscar Allen and even Draper (which started around mid-season once we had question marks over Big O and Henry was also having a bad injury run).

Ridley seems more like he wants to get out and ideally come to us - it didn't feel like we've put much legwork into it at all to be honest. On that note, I'd rather see if our injury ward returns like Doedee, Coleman can take over the spots next year. With Lester potentially continuing, I don't see the pressing need for Ridley on decent coin.

Completely agree with Neale, Daniher and Dunkley points - they were all a need or necessity at some point and we managed to get premium talent to fill those spots. Not sure if Ridley is worth a premium chase right now but if he wants to come, I don't mind us exploring it further.

I think that can often be illusory as clubs do a lot of work behind the scenes.

I don't really believe it when a player (especially a contracted one) requests a trade to a particular club and we hear that that club is supposedly surprised or unaware by the interest. There is absolutely no way that their manager hasn't been speaking to the club beforehand.
