Does open up a great opportunity for someone else though and while it’ll be hard to find a exact replacement we have got multiple guys on the list that have the ability to stand up and grow into that position.

Don’t want to downplay Cal because he’s been a great player for us but he didn’t have a great season and wasn’t all that impactful, albeit had a really good GF
He was really good in the first part of the year. Without making excuses he was carrying a leg for quite a while and only got himself right towards the end.

One of the other good things about him is he's resilient. He keeps getting himself up for games. I just hate losing players like that. I'm yet to be convinced it's that easy to find a replacement which is why Davis has gone after him. To really shore up their hardness and the defensive side of their wings/forward half where they got found out in finals

We searched for so long for a guy who we could reliably put back as a spare late in quarters, Cal was the one who pulled it off.

We needed someone to do the dirty defensive forward work while still being a goal threat. Cal did it.

Need someone to cover the wing or shut down a guy like Dempsey. Cal did it.

Again I agree why we cant afford to match any price, but damn its going to be hard to replace someone who can play all the roles he does.

Honestly, wouldn't be surprised if Allen is used as the spare at the end of quarters. Didn't do too badly in defense for the Eagles when asked to. Could even ask Draper/Fort to do so if push came to shove.

For the shutdown role in the forward 50, that's going to be bit harder. There aren't a lot of players in the league who can do what Ah Chee can do. On our list, Brain and McKenna come to mind. Both have missed out on spots this year, but with a good offseason, could see them on either side of the ground.

Lachie Murphy played meaningful minutes in two finals for them and was just about the first delisting they announced.

I just hope they appreciate Cal because he probably won't have a heap of stats but he'll do heaps to free up Ranking and Rachele.

Sorry for the intrusion - Murphy didn’t play finals (thank god), but having taken a vested interest in watching him over the last part of the season, I completely agree with the general consensus that his impact is greater than his stats suggest. He’s a good upgrade on Pedlar/Taylor, who did play finals, but would also help balance out the forward line in the event Tex retires, and like you say would free up our most dangerous small forwards

I don’t doubt you’ll find someone that’s able to replace him with ease, though, your depth is pretty strong

Congrats on the B2B 🎉

What's this about declining media interest? Both 9 and 7 have covered us a lot. Of course the Bronco's winning a huge game would overshadow that, but that's only because it was the big news of the day. We're still getting our fair share and if the Broncos lose, they will be quick to jump on us more again. But we're getting tons of coverage up here, so i'm a little surprised about those who are saying otherwise.

Also, during the last week, we've been on the front of the courier-mail 5 times. Of course the broncos were going to be on front today because they were the big news story of the day, like how we were on the front on Sunday. Calling the lions dead in Brisbane is so dramatic considering we haven't been this popular in Brisbane since probably forever.

I think Geelongs backline let them down a bit yesterday. Still seek very reliant on Stewart
I like to think we would have held up a little better that that without Harris, but I hope we’re never forced to find out at such a critical point of the season!

Edit: Stewart wasn’t the only reason they lost, we were too good all over the ground.

Yep, Bruce was getting caught under the ball few times yesterday - conceded frees to Dempsey, Bowes etc. Fixable and he is definitely a better ball user by hand n foot going the other way.

Bruce also led many times to the open wing to be an option for the bail out kick, can make that role his own next year.
The holding frees against Bruce were probably inexperience more than anything. He can learn that out of his game.

Bruce wouldn't be being paid much but he's a very hard worker determined to improve and now that he's had a taste of the big stage the hope is that he keeps developing as rapidly as he has over the last year.

It's a big tick that his disposal is generally on the better side of good and his decision making on the better side of adequate and improving.

Is a small lockdown defender pretty much all we need now pending starcevich leaves ? Probably 1 player short for depth there.
Agreed. I have been looking through a bit of draft material and this draft seems light on for lockdown defenders as far as I have found - but also a role that can be obtained from a later pick with careful due diligence as they don't get the accolades of the mids and rebounders (maybe this is what we are looking at the young Irish lad for in the Mullin mould). There was Oscar Barry a few have mentions from our academy but haven't found much on him and can't get to games.

More Ruck depth if Big O pulls the pin would be another one. Need another draftee / developing ruck but if there is a delisted player or cheap target that could also work. I have also said in another thread possibly Cody Curtain if we have any points left this draft could be a good ruck insurance and swingman to develop - has the physicality about him and seems to have plummetted down a lot of pre-draft lists was in the top 20 last year at times.

The other thing I think we could do with is a developing tagger / lockdown mid in the Dunkley mold - get a speccy late draft pick with decent athletic traits and a bit more size and have him shadow Dunks and hope for the best.

Also a small pressure forward to future plan for Charlie - hoping this could be Geesu but will have to wait and see.

Where have I seen this story before

he played for 4 clubs....your analogy is so bad and you have no idea what/if any clubs offered him anything which I doubt any were
Open Mike had him on a guest and Pike was fairly candid about his contractual circumstances. You can tell he knew he was getting absolutely gamed by the Lions and he definitely deserved more but also accepted he had issues and understood the gamble the Lions were taking with him. It wasn’t like he took pay cut out of good will…

The hate on Pikey is staggering.
I was quietly thinking this. With the emergence of Ty, a swinging Hippy or even just a defensive Hippy is pretty exciting with his mix of height and athleticism. He isn't going to be beaten in the air and he is fast and nimble enough to keep up on the ground.

Plus after two ACLs, being a defender means you are more likely to run in a straight line.
