Draper and OA are hardly 'mercenaries'.
They've both been at the one club they were drafted to as teenagers 8 and 9 years ago.

Are Lachie Neale, Charlie Cameron and Josh Dunkley mercenaries too ?

Genuinely flabbergasted this didn’t happen. Any mail on why the Allen contract hasn’t been submitted? Starcevich haggling?
It has to be for the theater. AFL likes to drag a few of these things out and keep itself in the news.

We process Drapers paperwork, appears to give us time to assess what tier 2 compensation looks like. We “alter” Allen’s offer, the AFL applies the secret herbs and spices and you get pick 2.

The vAFL will tell the club what the compo is before it is officially lodged. Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when Dillon and Swann called our clubs into their office and told us both exactly how it was going to go down.

IF we were to cede to Starce's request for circa Hugh McCluggage level money that would be disastrous for our strategic salary cap manoeuvre's going forward.

Other players would see that our club can be bent over and could/would buckle, players like Fletcher, Payne, Wilmot, Morris, Ashcroft x 2, Lohmann via their managers would be within their rights(whether true or not) to say hey I am worth more or at least the same as Starce, pony up Lions.

Even Jaspa who is not OOC until 2030 could ask for a renegotiation of his contract.

Overpaying 1 or 2 players could also lead to player unrest IMO, it will be interesting to see if the over paying strategy works for St Kilda in the medium to long term with TDK.

Going hard how? By saying the 01-03 teams save for one player are far more loyal and not about themselves as some of this crop?

Why are you making out I’m ungrateful? About what exactly? Saying I’d prioritise a two time premiership player that is arguably the best in the game in his position over two very injury prone players, one of which that acts like a goose regularly and shoots his mouth off far too often that plays in a dime a dozen position that has also achieved Jack shit in his career at an even worse club. The less said about OA the better. Injury prone, plays in a position of no need and is being overpaid which will likely force others out.

I don’t know about you, but I’d much prefer reward premiership players that have done the hard graft than reward mercenaries wanting a payday and ride coattails off of others hard work.

You’re mixing up two separate points - we needed to acquire Allen, regardless of whether Starce stayed or left under free agency

The issue is not that we couldn’t afford to keep Starce, it’s that WC offered him much more than we were prepared to pay

So really your issue is not about bringing in new players, it’s about the fact that the Lions list managers didn’t value Starce as highly as WC

Now that’s a valid argument to make (I don’t agree with it but it’s entirely valid position for you to hold) but it’s not the same as the one you posted

The two decisions are not linked

at the end of the day none of us are privy to all the considerations that went into the decision made by the players who are both departing and arriving at the club. dollars are obviously a factor but im sure there are other things that go into the choices that allen, draper, ah chee and starcevich in particular have made.

to insinuate that the voss era dynasty team were somehow more loyal to the club than the current crop based off the current trade period is quite demeaning.

Or that it even matters. It's a business now. A very large business

It's also ignoring that players left back then too, in a period where there was less player movement, and it's denigrating the players who are staying at our club this time around by tarring them with the same "less loyal" brush.

No free agency in them days. Totally different world.

Trying to justify paying Starcevich $900 k a year over 6 years under the banner of loyalty is the kind of list management that quickly undid us during the three peat years. Clearly the club doesn’t want to make the same mistake. Paying less money for a Key Forward that is a need is better list management.

You guys are going to be really happy with Oscar he will draw the best key back from
Morris/Gallop and you’ll see just how good his leading and hands are with the quality of delivery from your midfield which is what we were unable to give him.

Need to fix his body up first. We are still living through 2 years of Tom Doedee trying to get on the park - so we aren't running some kind of magic rehabilitation center either.

Premierships are masking our mistakes so we hope Allen/Draper has a better run than Doedee.

Very, very different injuries between Allen/Doedee. Oscar will be right for day 1 preseason assuming no new setbacks.

AI seems to be experiencing some challenges with the famous #14

AI is not "needed" on the Essendon board but i think it should be okay on the Lions one :)
There are enough smart people on Lions BF to pick up anything that does not look correct
Or in this case a few laughing emoji

I had my first ever post deleted on the Essendon board just got the notification below.
The information provided by AI on why Draper was band 2 and not band one was correct.
Correct in as much as we fans don't know contract $ nor does AI.
But the explanation was correct.

I was just replying to a poster that thought pick 20 was just not fair.

However, i want to point out that when i first asked AI the Draper question it was not all correct. Mostly yes
I pointed out to AI (i have not named it yet) it was not band 1 as it mentioned, but band 2,
AI then agreed it was indeed band 2 and adjusted its explanation which was basically the same but mentioned band 2 and expanded the explanation on why it was band 2.

It does seem strange that things fell apart between OA and WCE. What are your thoughts on why that happened? Seems from a distance to be a class footballer and decent (captain) guy.

Interesting take.

We have won back to back flags despite significant injury lists both years.

I'd doubt any team in the comp could do what the Lions have achieved in these circumstances.

Demonstrates what a deep & talented list the club has assembled.

It's quite a remarkable achievement, yet for some the glass is still half empty.

It always will be BangyBangy - our achievement is due to the depth we built via drafting and youngsters stepping in to perform at the highest degree very early in their career. 6 under 22s carried us to a flag is remarkable in itself.

Let's not use that to cover our trading gaps though - we have gone in with picking up injured players on the cheap as a strategy. There'll be hits and misses. We have no other option as our draft hand is busy with more youngsters coming through so free agency is our only route.

I don't hate the approach but let's not gloss over the failings either. If we overdo it and have a longer list in the injury ward holding up the cap space as well, then youngsters will start sliding out on the other side. Tough balancing act and that's why I don't envy the people who are in charge of it.

Look if we’re honest about where we are at as a club in terms of performance yet strangely having a glut of good KPFs would we rather pick 2 or Oscar?

The club clearly wanted the former and made offers to Oscar appropriately. That’s fine and reasonable.

What I don’t like is the lack of transparency with Oscar and hanging him out to dry after exploring his options which we clearly wanted him to do.

Oscar is not a leader in my view but was voted in by his team mates. He is however, an outstanding person. Diligent, coachable and absolute class with the kids at community days. I wish Oscar every success at Brisbane and would be delighted if he won a flag with you guys. No hard feelings here whatsoever, just unfortunate timing in a rebuild.
