Your view and the AFL contract rules are 2 different things though. When a player signs an afl contract with a club, then that club holds the rights to that player until the player reaches free agency - and this is the situation with Cal. This is to give the club who made the initial investment in a player some protection against a player signing for 2-years of development, then walking out where-ever they want.
It won’t go to court - the AFL is a monopoly industry and these are the conditions every player agrees to when they sign an AFL contract.
Crows & Lions fans arguing on social media about this has been fun to watch over something meaningless as a trade not going through.I don't know why the Cows are melting down. They are getting him for nothing.
Yep only real loser on all of this is Cal and his family.Crows & Lions fans arguing on social media about this has been fun to watch over something meaningless as a trade not going through.
Adelaide, presumably, still get Ah Chee while the Lions move to getting ready for the draft & their list in order for next year, same as the Crows.

I do sympathise how this has played out and he'll have a tiny amount of stress until it's sorted but he is going to WELL off.Yep only real loser on all of this is Cal and his family.
The fact the Crows weren’t even interested in negotiating makes me think the PSD was their plan all along. Absolutely pathetic, shows they’re an amateur club and nothing to worry about on field for a while though

I wouldn’t call Cal a loser from all of this, in fact if his Manager plays this right he could actually force Adelaide’s offer up even more for Cal.Yep only real loser on all of this is Cal and his family.
Crom offer went from F2 to F2 and F3 in 10 days.
Yeah they won’t get anywhere by trying to rip off other clubs. Dom is known as a tough negotiator but at least everyone knows what they’re in for and that’s generally a pretty fair deal and things will get done. After the latest reports about the Crows not budging at all this whole thing definitely reflects far worse on them.I've always believed they are a bit out of touch in terms of trading since they went from 15th to 1st in one big jump.
They'll adjust in coming years when they keep running into issues during future trades.
Also amazing all the media agreeing Csl was not worth afirst rounder but Curnow is worth 3 plus changeI honestly couldn't care less for Cal. He has chosen to chase a big pay day, that's all well & good, no issue there.
But he has chosen a club that thought they could just open a cheque book, entice the player to leave & under compensate the club that has made him a two time premiership player.
If a deal was negotiated for a pick in the 20 - 25 range we would have jumped at it, and it would have been in the ball park of fair value.
The Crom have always been dead to me. Now Cal is too.

This is such a great point. Deals can be made so everyone is a winner, or in the case of it being a player that the other club doesn't want to lose, giving a fair deal to the club losing the player. But the whole idea of 'I can't have won this deal unless I ripped you off' is a bad business case if that is your MO. Eventually no one who has other options wants to work with you. This is amateur hour from the Crows. I see it in my business area all the time. These guys who don't think long term. Take the Trump approach that if you don't lose in our negotiations then I didn't win. It's short-termism at its worst. The industry is small, like mine. People who are successful work to get the best outcome for everyone and can see others as partners, not necessarily competitors. The problem is that they won't understand, when someone doesn't trust them in the future, that they did it to themselves. I've seen so many people leave my industry bewildered by why things didn't go their way after they tried to bully everyone else. Their post trade media performances really reinforce their inability to think about this. It's not a zero sum game. Anyway, we'll be fine. It was a very positive trade period really, with a bit of fun at the end!
Who is this clown? what a load of dribbleYou list manager is the new Dodoro. Wouldnt take a 2 and a 3 for a guy that not worth a first and I think everyone in the AFL world knows that. You piss of a player manager for what...it just sours people against wanting to go there if they cant look after players who have won them a flag.
Dom has a long positive history with Cal dating back to when both were at the Suns and he was pivotal in getting him to the Lions when he appeared to be going nowhere at the Suns. I would be very surprised if Dom has not had a good conversation with Cal post last night. My sources are telling me Ah Chee has actually agreed to pay the Lions to play for them next year.
For real though, it’s probably already been posted but Ambrogio’s full interview with Edmund and Cornes this morning was so good.
Communicating to them that most of the times they have gone after players they have felt uncomfortable with the asking price, but ultimately had to pay up more than they wanted, as it was incumbent upon them to get the deal done for the player.
Then following that up my stating, “whilst we felt uncomfortable at the time, I can say we’ve never had any regrets.”
This is trading in a nutshell. You put forward an offer, get the player to commit, it’s on you to get that deal done.
None of the proposed deals which have been made public were manifestly unjust.
Love how well spoken and pragmatic Ambrogio is. Being pragmatic and unemotive are the cornerstones of what make him so good.
