I agree though, I think we continue to hit the draft and shouldn't bother with the speculative types. We have enough GOPs - now we need quality over quantity

While I fully agree that we need quality over quantity, in practice one cannot just get quality. Plus the AFL' unequal Academy Field is hamstringing us if we do end up with early picks reducing that quality.

Well unless you are blessed like the Suns where they can bundle points for top end Academy picks.

One can try and trade to improve the quality of our picks. But as this is by trade, how successful you can be is problematic. St Kilda tried to trade up to Top 4 last year but were outbid by other Clubs.

One thing the Saints have done quite well at his live trades during the draft to either improve our draft hand with more picks ( 2023 ) or last year where we live traded to gain Dodson (looks like a winner) and (said, jury is out but so far has been underwhelming).

We will still have other picks, including rookie picks, and so with these you can either choose to pick players who you think are more likely to make it but will most likely be average players or you can also, or as well pick some players who if they make it could be quality players (ie Collard who looks book or bust to me).

In the last draft with our first two picks we looked to have taken both approaches. Trav who looked like (at selection) being the player more likely to have a long AFL career, and The Viking who was seen to be a much more speculative pick.

Lovett wasn't a known Crack Head.

True.

I was a huge advocate for going after Lovett at the time. He was a legit game breaking star ala Shai Bolton.

There were plenty of rumors about his off field behavior but nothing like what came to light.

In retrospect; Grabbing one of Gibson, Fevola or Barry Hall would have been unreal.

Fevola turned us down as he didn’t want to earn less than Kosi.

We had a deal agreed before we did the Lovett deal.

I hope the Lance rumour isn’t true, he signed on for an additional 3 last year so hopefully it’s something that can be fixed.
If Nas is happy to go to either Adelaide team I hope we can start negotiations with Sid Draper. That would ease the pain slightly.

The TDK stuff has become a joke.
A) he’s not worth that money
B) we need midfielders who aren’t ruckman
C) our current players, particularly those OOC, are probably a bit disenchanted by it all
D) It’s actually become a massive burden for TDK himself - likely effecting his mental health and day to day life.

Offer should not have come in so early and I hope we didn’t leak it to media.

They are pulling it in this year.
No they aren’t.

There is no limit to the amount of Academy players the Northern clubs can match bids on.

Nor any change to the exclusive zones for the Academies.

There are at least 3 Academy players that Gold Coast will match this year. Could be more.

The AFL are tinkering with DVI points and the third round being the limit for DVI points. But fundamentally nothing has changed.

The changes are cosmetic.

The only major change the AFL has made is to relax the rules on relation to matching bids for NGA players. Reverting to back to the rules of 2020, solely as a means of placating club discontent.

The AFL is a conjurer.

Agreed

It's naive to think the money we're offering TDK has no effect on our current players' thinking.

A) nobody ever said he was
B) name the FA midfield we can get without spending draft capital
C) lol
D) double lol.

If you put your stkilda hat aside and and look at it from Nas’ point of view.

You’re asking to go to the Crom next year and you’d be bloody excited about it. He would be devastating for them and they look as sharp as anyone right now.
Family thing also. He is gone.

Public exposure is the only cure for it.
Agree. Thats why he came out with it originally and Ross adds his little 2 cents worth occasionally in his presser.
It is out there, now he needs to just keep on with it. Internally is fine too.

Which kid was traded for significant unders without having some big injury concerns and went on to become a star?

They get their blood back in return for letting the good kids go.

It’s like if Sam Flanders gets shaken loose. He is going to cost a first rounder.
Afl have manufactured a system where by if 1 of their young stars wants to leave gws or gc other teams have to cough up multiple 1st rdp's ,so in actual fact its a never ending cycle of top end talent coming through the door on top of every thing else they get.no wonder true long time vfl/ afl supporters with half a brain have lost interest in what essentialy is a corruptly run comp.

Was Barry Hall interested?

100%

2 years ago when I said the F/S and Academy rules were ****ed with my mates they’d laugh and take the piss. Those same mates are now bringing it up in conversation as an unfair advantage.

One of the great life lessons I’ve had is ‘the squeaky wheel gets the oil’

I think everyone knows he actually wants to play in his home state at some point, but he also loves playing for St Kilda. It’s not as cut and dry because both scenarios are winning scenarios for him.

I think it’s actually a feather in the cap to the club that he’s struggling so much with decision to stay or go. If our onfield results were better this year I suspect it would have been done by the bye.

All the same, all I’ve heard from the same source that I leaked 3 months ago is that he will sign for 2. The only time it’ll be certain is when pen is on the paper though.

I’d also caution anyone saying ‘the club will announce it x day’

When he signs, we will know.

i apologise if I offend anyone in the process but if nas and collard head home this offseason it does further damage to the stereotype that drafting indigenous players interstate is fraught with danger.

The challenges are obviously but pulling young men who are strongly connected to community and culture away from that are on display for everyone to see. Despite the potential to be on the wrong end of it, it is refreshing to see young men value that over everything.

It speaks to their connection to what’s genuinely important in life, and if they were just normal citizens in the community with roles out of the public eye we’d be lauding such behaviour.

I, like the rest of you are hoping that the pull for each of these young men can be overcome for at least a further two seasons.

Not saying your wrong but is there any statistical evidence to support that indigenous players get ‘homesick’ more then other players?

I understand the sentiment around recruitment of indigenous players and their connection to community, land and culture but it also raises the broader question of a neutral system where the same rules need to apply to all.
Not an easy one to solve but it does need to be equal.

I’m definitely not confirming the sentiment, but it is clearly something as important we’ve identified as a club hence our industry leading indigenous program

If Lovett played in 2010 we win that grand final. He was a line breaking machine with ridiculous amounts of speed. Ball use was decent too & our list didn’t quite have that last piece
