If Nas does end up signing with us there’s going to be some really disappointed doomsayers in here
Pretty sure everyone wants Nas to sign long term in here mate. Don't get your wires crossed

Rewriting history there, Steele was elite for 3 years 2020-2022 and still very good outside that. His fall off this year has really coloured people's perceptions.

Agree Jack's knee and shoulder injuries have stymied his progression since then. It looked like he was playing through injury for a significant period and eventually that catches up with everyone. There must be a reason the group elect him as captain each year and some of that is his courage to play through what he has.

His past few years have been a level below what he offered in that period, but he is still our captain and doesnt get enough love at times.

Hes also a victim of body language at times. He can look disinterested and even annoyed alot of the time.

Externally he just doesnt present like a club captain at all (clearly his leadership qualities are massively rated internally cause hes been voted as such for a few years running now).

I agree.

He is the first to say he is not a natural leader he has had to work at it, but if we are honest we have very few on field leaders. He has been carrying the midfield for years and being captain of an unsucessful young side is a tough gig. No one could ever fault his effort, he is not perfect but he is the best we have!

I actually think this year might be a sensible end to his tenure.

Wilkie for a couple years or just give it to Windy and/or Owens now.

So at this point Nas looks gone, TDK seems inevitable which means we will trade Marshall. Aleer also seems likely. Fingers crossed we don't also lose Windy along with Nas.

Bergman and a future first for Nas would be my guess (yuck), though it could be something like Berry, a future first and a second rounder (gross).

2026 likely team?

B: Stocker, Aleer, Tauru
HB: Sinclair, Wilkie, Hastie
C: Hill, Steele, Windhager
HF: Hall, Caminiti, Sharman
F: Higgins, King, Owens

Foll: TDK, Macrae, Bergman
Int: Wilson, Henry, Phillipou, Wood, Garcia

Not particularly inspiring. Plenty of foot soldiers but our one genuine star is gone and we've swapped our ruck for a similar player who costs twice as much but is two years younger. I really think Aleer is surplus to needs considering we have Wilkie, Caminiti and Tauru looking like a good defensive lineup with Howard and Barrat in reserve.

A lot of "why did we pick up Boyd?" and "why is Dodson not playing?" Boyd was brought in as a big bodied ruck, who can compete against big heavy guys, purely as coverage for Marshall, as our other "rucks" - Heath, Keeler and Dodson are not ready yet to play 70% ruck in the AFL yet. Boyd is also a great leader and cost a list spot and most likely a minimum chips salary. We just brought in a younger Tom Campbell as a break glass, and he seems to have been a great addition to the culture. When he plays VFL, he is also providing our developing mids first use.

Dodson is still in his first season as a ruck, and there is no point bringing him in to be pinballed around by hard AFL bodies. He has also been developing his forward craft, but has had an advantage simply being taller than his opponents. I would imagine that we won't see him at AFL level until 2027 - when his body starts filling out and hardening. He has massive legs, but doesn't have the upper body strength required to compete at AFL yet. That's where Heath has the advantage at the moment. Dodson could be one of those players that comes in and people go "where the hell did this guy come from?" He has a lot of talent, and seems driven to learn and improve.

If we bring in De Koning, then I would imagine that Boyd would receive thanks for everything he has contributed to the club, and they might hang on to Heath to play that role. Then we could have 4 or 5 players that can play ruck (and rest/play forward), and don't have to throw Owens/Caminiti/King into the ruck.

Yeh Boyd made sense and frankly if everyone of our rucks cant go next year wed probably take boyd back in the mid season draft.

TDK plays it one out, Heath is the back up, Dodson is the development guy. If anything Roma becomes surplus (along with this salary).

Something that noone in the media seems to be talking about (despite the fact that they spend every waking moment taking about trades) is that you can now trade firsts two years ahead. We could ask for Ports R1 for 2025, 26 and 27.
They dont have this years (goes to GC for Lukosius).

Weve certainly discussed getting 26 AND 27 along with a player.

Very uninspiring forward line, think we need to add someone this off season

I think the club should have forseen the burden the captain role is having on Jack and passed the baton sometime ago.

I strongly disagree re Boyd, he was the worst list decsion the club have made for sometime. Just like Campbell you acheive nothing having list cloggers (with no future) on your list just because they might be needed. Look what has evolved with Max Heath and Dodson getting opportunity they are beginning to thrive. When you have cloggers like Boyd the club are obligated to play them at VFL, starving the future players of opportunity.

Have you seen Luke Blakiston running around with Essendon the past few weeks, he was the other state league ruckman option available when to chose Boyd. The irony is Luke has been playing a key defender role rather than rucking - thats been done by Visentini another promising kid who was under our noses and we over looked. Blakiston hasnt been setting the world on fire but at least he has proven some versatility and athletic traits something to work with, Boyd is like watching a slower smaller version of Campbell who cant take an over head mark.

Just to be paint a further picture Vigo Visentini 204cm was taken at pick #8 in the 2023 rookie draft, after playing in a winning Sandringham Dragons side mostly as a key forward - relieving ruck.

The club got the recruitment of Boyd very very wrong, list cloggers or break glass type players take you no where!

We could've also drafted Archer May in the mid-season draft with Boyds list spot

Isn’t their rules about not trading out all of your first rounders?

You have to use one every 2/3 years from memory?

So Port might have issues doing that if you factor in they don’t have a pick this year.

AFL can let you do it, they just have to sign off on it. Pretty sure Geelong broke that rule early on.
