Makes more sense now, I wasn’t really interested in Perryman I didn’t rate him that highly. Doesn’t change my opinion of what journalist know about contracts, this one was pegged by afl rules.

It’s worth another 10% plus when you’re chasing a free agent so my apologies. It also doesn’t change my opinion of Aleer who isn’t a free agent. Anyone who thinks he’s worth a second rounder or more and battle like money is seeing something I’m not.

He is an incredibly athletic but very raw as a footballer imo.
I’d happily part with a second rounder.

I don’t think he is the messiah. But he is unique against our entire defensive talls cohort. Young enough to be around and as we are trying to lure him we are probably throwing 10-15% more on a deal.

750k (reported figure) isn’t really damaging unless Aleer is absolutely shit. His form this season says he can hold his own.

It just hasn’t answered the question of if he can be more.

I don't get why people think there is only two choices for us. Stupid or moronic. It's like you went to the pub and blew your pay check on the pokies on the way to work and you wish that you'd gone on a drug bender instead.

There are a myriad ways to work the salary cap. Just because did dumb things in the past....(that most of you cheered on as genius) doesn't mean we need to keep doing it.

You don't need to blow it all on a B grade ruck.
You’re basing a lot of your argument on the fact that TDK is a B grade ruckman, which is your opinion.

You’re entitled to it, that’s fine, but it doesn’t make it correct. Most football experts would disagree that he’s a B Grade ruckman. Many would also argue he projects to be an all Australian level ruck

As you’ve said in your own post, there are many ways to work the salary cap.
None of us know what the deal looks like within the confines of the cap. We may well be paying half the contract across the next 3 years while we’re not contending, who knows? Have we structured all of our contracts for the past 2-3 seasons to ensure we had this ability to buy a player and now we’re here, we must spend it?

You’ve been very vocal about the fact you don’t like the way we’re using our cap space, but the reality is you don’t actually know how we’re using it.

Started late as well didn't he? Can't see why he wouldn't have another 3-4 years of prime footy. Him, Higgo, Butler and Hall (Mid rotation) would be an incredible forward mix.
Yeah look, pure talent he is triple the player Henry is and arguably it’s the same role.

He has arial prowess - which Ross has banged on about all year. He is dynamic etc.

I’d be okay parting with Collard and accepting whatever happens down the line with him. But it means we need another small forward to develop behind Henry.

Ryan is far too old for our current build.

Next.

I don't mind it as long as the trade cost isn't too high. Really we replace Butler with a dominant small forward with X factor. We really need to start getting wins next year. He could probably play until 32 to 34. Once Wilkie, Sinclair etc are gone. we are going to be falling backing back a fair bit. It lets us push for finals before that happens.

You should be bulging in your pants with this link.

Would rather keep him but if he wants out at least aren't getting ripped off with a 3rd round pick or whatever we got from Cripps.

Yeh, any moves we make really need to be considered in the context of team needs and age profile.

Aleer fits both those things and the money being reported isnt much (especially for any sort of KPP)

Not if he's following the same model of paying huge contracts to GOPs that bite long after the list manager is moved on.
Hopefully the people around him at the Saints will have more smarts?

Tom Morris -

Geelong is going to come for Marshall. What we ask for in return might be the only stumbling block.

Nas - no one knows what he wants to do. Even his best mates. Saints could ask for 2 top 10 picks and a third first in the teens.

The logical inference to draw is that Nas doesn't want to disappoint his mates in telling them he's leaving.
Unless he's refusing to tell Burgoyne, in which case he's trying to not disappoint him.
Either way, I'm disappointed.

West coast also applying for Draft assistance according to Greg Swann

They have been as bad as us at our worst. Just unbelievably bad choices at the ND. Reid is their best and he's problematic.

Patrick Said seems to be developing nicely. Maybe we do target Lachy Dovastan in this year's draft? Maybe even a Taylor Byrne late who kicked 5 in the champs vs Metro.

Is Dovaston a reach if we grabbed him with our first to develop behind Ryan?
Haven’t started reading into the draft and pretending I know what I’m talking about yet.

(Preference is to keep Collard above all)

On SEN this morning I heard them mentioning extra assistance also because of 4 early retirees due to concussion.

So I thought…
McCartin
Roberton
Koby Stevens
Longer
Even Dempster if I recall correctly…

zilch for us!

The smartest move west coast makes is moving Reid to Richmond for picks 2+3 and anything else they can get.

You take the top 4 kids from this draft and you build something with an entire group and it helps them stay - with no messiah complex’s to deal with.

So we are blowing it all up are we? You have seen the books, know all the current contracts, how it is structured going forward, who the 37% increase in SC is built in to each and every contract? I don't think so.
You say there are other ways of doing it.
One way is to go after an established star, too bad we haven't tried that I suppose.
Maybe target young stars about to explode like a Xerri or Callaghan, wish we had of tried for those two stars.
Maybe enlighten us in all the innovative different ways we could have used the salary cap.
Please enlighten us. There is a pattern with you gringo, you get all huffy when your inconsistent opinions are highlighted.
Try harder Theo, daddy Dard Cosby will have to sit you down for some more fatherly advice.

Aleer has been 50/50 between barely sighted and promising. He's one that could absolutely go either way. I'd have chased Wade Derksen from GWS. Big WA forward who moved back and looks equally as damaging. Looks a proper KPD.

The GIANTS added athletic swingman Derksen to their list in the 2022 AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft. Plucked out of the WAFL by the GIANTS in the middle of the year on the back of an eye-catching 22-disposal, four-goal, seven-mark performance for the Peel Thunder, Derksen is a latecomer to the game after starting off playing rugby. Standing at 197cm, Derksen was previously part of Essendon’s VFL program before playing with Nightcliff in the Northern Territory. Derksen showed strong form for the GIANTS at VFL level in 2023, finishing as the side’s leading goalkicker for the season with 35 majors from 18 games. Despite his strong form up forward in 2023, Derksen was swung down back in 2024 where he transformed into one of the best intercepting defenders in the VFL as he continues to push for an AFL debut.

Richmond probably doesn't appeal. He's a real Geelong dickhead type. They'll get him for $300k a year and some magical T shirt from Cotton On that prints money.
