As was asked to JJ - what do we then do in two years when that deal is up and his management expects a pay rise?

Nearly every commentator is stupid for suggesting that the Nas and TDK deals are linked in any way. We can offer them both a significant amount of cash for their signature. And in the case that Nas does leave, does that mean we dont look at other ways to improve the list due to optics? We just stand still for 12 months because peoples minds are so small that they cant comprehend list managers trying to do 2 things at once?

It depends where he is at I guess. If his stocks rise he might be worth more. If he's injured and or playing shit his price drops back. We just need to get this signed away. It's one of those list management pieces that is bigger than one player. It shows fans and sponsors that we can draft, develop and hold on to our stars.

Losing him would be so catastrophic for memberships, attendances and momentum that the money almost becomes irrelevant. You'd probably not bother with Aleer and TDK if we are set to go backwards in the near future.

Sitting bottom 4 with Nas being talked up as the best player in footy playing in SA sounds so brutal that I would find it hard to enjoy AFL for the next few years. Anyway, if a B+ project ruck is worth $1.7 he's worth at least $2 million on the open market.

The same guy paying $1.7m for TDK isn’t overpaying.

Interesting take
Because he understands the market

1.7 prices Carlton out of matching the free agency bid. Instead of trading potentially 2x first round picks for a player who showed strong indications of A-grade ability earlier this year, we only have to pay a bit of extra salary cap that would be taken from us anyway given AFL rules

And if you’ve tracked any previous AFL trade, you’d know that it always costs more to displace a player from their current club than to keep a player

Letting Battle go for a kid showing signs of generational talent during a rebuilding phase deserves the highest of praise
We didn't really do this.

It's worked out like that, and I'm beyond happy it did, but there's no way in August last year the list management team said "Yep, screw Battle, he can bugger off, we've got a Flying Viking coming our way"

If Tauru goes to North at Pick 2, I'm not sure we're so happy with the move if we had Langford plodding around half forward right now.

Hawthorn say rubbish

Being upset at signing a top 5-10 player in the league for only two seasons is a real smooth brain thing to do Stavvy boy
That’s not the actual point I was making paddy.

I’m very clearly questioning the brains that will throw everything to retain a player for 2 years with no long term commitment and highlighting the future issues that come off the back of it.

A number of posters are happy to kick the can down the road. No issues if you feel similar.

But if you think Nas or anyone who acts for or supports him is going to be expecting less than the $2m a year you are throwing at him now - then I have magic beans to sell you.

The same people want to tell me but there will be better trade offers. It’s the same shit we will be offered today. He is still OOC. There is still all the same challenges and issues we are dealing with and arguing between ourselves now but we will also have the Tassie draft that year.

A 2 year deal on a reasonable increase now, still gives you a decent hand to play if we face all the same issues again

I get Stavros point
If we sign him for 2 years at 2 million a year he isn't going to take a pay cut in 2 years time. So we would naturally want a longer commitment on that sort of dollars

But I also say screw it we have been screaming for a generational talent at our football club since Roo and we have him under our roof at the moment
Literally been begging for a dynamic midfielder for 10+ years... get one and now we want to cheap put on it :tearsofjoy:

If the cap is only going up... what do you think the free agency cost of landing a jet midfielder is going to be in 2 years time

lmao firstly Langford plays wing, not HF

Secondly, he’s the 2nd highest rated 19 year old this year

He would’ve played every game for us on a wing this year

That’s more than just “plodding around”

I don’t post here much anymore but thought I’d chime in with my thoughts.

Nas is clearly the most important player we’ve had since Riewoldt, and I’d argue he’s more important. For years we’ve clutched onto any bit of potential in our young players hoping they’d turn into a superstar. Well, we now have our superstar.

If we lose him, and it looks as though that is more than likely the case, who is our best player? Probably our ruckman who we are trying to replace.
It will set our rebuild back years, but if we can keep him, even if it’s only the 2 years, it will not only help our other young players but I believe we will start winning games and moving up the ladder which in turn will (hopefully) attract better players.
Thinking that losing Nas now instead of in 2 years time would be better is ridiculous. I don’t see how losing him now is positive in any way shape or form. It would be disastrous for our club IMO.

If we can afford $1.7 for TDK and $1.5 for Nas, piss the TDK offer off, and offer Nas $2+ a year. We just have to get this one done.

In two years time if we're still sitting at the bottom end of the ladder by round 20 I'll pack his bags myself.

So then we haven’t built anything with Nas and are set back 2 years of player development + the future years of damage from NAS leaving at point.

You are making my point here when I said it’s worse if he leaves in 2027 vs today.

To yours and stavs point, were not negotiating anything at this point, hes the hottest commodity in footy, everyone is ****ing falling all over themselves to get his signature and apparently Port is now gonna go to $2m for 7 years (or very close to).

The options as they stand are do the $2m/2 years he supposedly wants from us (at least the term). Stand idly by with our hands in our pockets at $1.4 or $1.6 for 2 years and watch the oppo blow us the **** out of the water and then feel good about it because "we didnt cave".

People thinking this is a negotation are hilarious. We have nothing he wants and hes given us the manual for his signature apparently. Just ****ing do it.

Call it kicking the can down the road if you like but we supposedly have the money and want the player. I couldnt give a **** if we manage to save a couple hundred grand a year down the line over this.
Where has it actually been reported he is demanding 2 years at 2 mill from us? It also hasn’t been reported anywhere he is being offered that amount long term from Port either.

Seems like a lot of jumping to conclusion on that one.

"Selling the dream", as you put it, doesn't need to involve rolling over with your arse in the air and letting a player manager pump you........

Your "give everyone an open chequebook" approach is a sure fire way to bugger a salary cap in short order

Absolutely. Selling the dream of how taking a bit less and a solid timeframe for improvement might end up being better for a players future than instant gratification is definitely a good thing.

That said we really can't afford to lose Nas so we need to be prepared to flex around what ever he wants to do with his next contract. Just get him signed up and move on to negotiating other contracts.

We are staring at losing 2 top 5 players in back to back seasons because SoS wanted to play hardball. Why the hell are people praising him?

Yeah alright, Tarau looks a gun. But nothing Port can offer us will satisfy? We will probably draft Dyson Sharp and Sam Cumming with those picks, and you guessed it. They'll ask for a trade home in 3 years.
Yeah weird way to do a list rebuild lose your best players in the right age group

We were told the reason we were forcing Battle out was we were getting 2 elite mids in the draft

What has SOS done for all the praise? Not much imo
But same people were praising Gags SL and Ratts

Amazing people getting angry at NAS calling him selfish even had his character questioned on here . The club has offered TDK 12 x 8 years offered Finn Callaghan 17 mill for 10 years but expect NAS to take less . But never been about the money

In furious agreement. Ricmel said above ot was about club brand and what it will do to the support base. They need to read the room.
I am going to my second game this week as it might be the last time I see NAZ live in a Saints jersey.
I have said if they lose NAZ, that will be it for me. The best player since Riewoldt we can't keep?
I would still support the Saints but that would be the end of my membership. And that's not some hairy chested threat, my financial involvement has reduced from $800 to $150 a year, I would just have lost hope that we could ever have the players to compete for a flag and we are just a feeder club.
Correct, the collateral if we lose Nas (e.g., membership, match day revenue, corporate sales, impact on broader retention, etc) will far outweigh the list management risks from putting him on a 1.8-2.2m/year two year deal.

If we’re worried about BW asking for a bigger slice in 2 years time, I think that’s an issue we worry about down the track.

We won’t have the whip hand and can’t afford to get cute noting we’ve been splashing a war chest.

It also seems a bit silly here we are months ago wining and dining Nas and his family in a Brighton mansion, but push comes to shove and we don’t want to put the money on the table. It’s disingenuous.

Yeah I see nothing wrong with kicking the can down the road and dealing with the issue then.

Absolutely not short sighted and aligns with what the best clubs and list managers do.

Not sure what you are actually asking , wasn't it shown on the news ?
There was a segment on the news, but it wasn’t real footage. It was some silly cartoon thing where they showed a dining room table and then popped in the people one by one, cartoon style

That’s why I asked if you had seen actual footage of the night on the news because it wasn’t on the news I watched and I haven’t seen it anywhere.

In other words it wasnt as if the Saints had allowed anyone at the dinner to film it and then it had leaked.

That was all.

Who says we're building around one player.

We clearly have a plan and have been sticking to it long before Nas decided to go god mode.

If he leaves in 2 years after taking $4m who cares, at least we have him for two years to try and turn his head.

No that's just my read on it, maybe I'm wrong
I’m just saying that Tom Morris is not the most believable journo as far as I’m concerned. How would he possibly know how Nas and family would have felt.
He’s looking for clicks - I mean he put it out on the news as if it was a current item and then afterwards, quietly on Twitter, mentioned it had happened months ago.

If you take Nas out of whatever we are building. We are building nothing of note. There is no guarantee we are contenders in 2027 (- however the club seems to be putting a lot of pressure on itself that we will be around the mark)

We are being nothing but short sighted and desperate if we start throwing $2m a season for 2 years and getting no loyalty in return.

Negotiations have to work for both parties.
