Never suggested that it would be easy - though we do have SC space from losing TDK and a northern academy's worth of talent linked to us over the next 2-3 years
It’s just fanciful to suggest we can lose all these guys and somehow be an elite team in a handful of years.

We saw it when Gibbs etc left in 2015. We were nowhere for ages.

The list isn’t that dire this time around but just compare our list without a few high end talents to the other lists out there and it doesn’t paint a pretty picture.

Reckon we'll lose TDK, JSOS and maybe two more over the next couple of years. It sucks but it can turn quickly if we appoint well and make the right moves in that time.

Our best hope would be the TDK pick turning into gold, Walker and Dean being guns and I guess if a Curnow or Walsh leaves the picks we get turning into something.

Similar to how Port got Butters and Rozee and it helped them retool quickly.

Still though that is absolute best case scenario and even then we don’t see those players being high impact players for 3-4 years minimum.

Oscar Allen is earmarked for Brisbane.
Curnow won't be going there.
Voss is in survival mode next season, very little chance he will be up for losing Curnow etc, he will bank on getting a better season from him & others.
Voss might not have a say in it. Realistically between GW & Austin, Voss should only be consulted to hear his opinion only, as a courtesy rather than being involved.

Curnow is 29 next year and has had 3 knee surgeries this year alone. His value whilst still high, isn’t crazy atm..

I also think you maybe underrating Bailey and the influence he’d have on our forward line (premiership experience)

Cripps (31) - Pick 15 and a 2nd rounder (16 pick) upgrade seems fair to me. If he wants to go home.

IMO Motlop, Acres and Chesser are all worth SFA, maybe WCE could chuck in a third rounder.

Chesser offers more of the attributes we need speed and foot skills.

Firstly I expect us to bounce next year and at least make finals, while Melbourne I’d expect to be bottom 3. So, I’d be happy to gamble with second rounders, as I’d expect a pick upgraded in 2026 in a better draft.

Lever would add (premiership experience and leadership) to our defence for the next few years allowing HOF and Dean to build/grow into their bodies.

You can insert/remove any names you like, but I wanted to focus on speed, foot skills, leadership and premiership experience.
If we were expecting to bounce back then for sure go after Lever, although I’m sceptical. I do think we could get cheaper defensive cover and use any trade capital on speed or forward half players.

15 and a 2nd for Cripps is decent, still think Acres and Motlop both get us a pick.

I know it hasn’t been done before but I don’t know if any rules prohibit it, but why couldn’t a club and player adjust their contract to make them a free agent and claim the compo pick.

What would your rating of Bailey be?

Feel with the current non selection of Pitto is he may be in danger and rightfully so. Throw him on the trade table, pay some of his contract, find another promising kid or something better.

TDK leaving won't make that much of a difference to us. I would prefer SOS stayed but really, he's injury prone and missed a hell of a lot of football.

If Walsh leaves, we are losing somebody who has been cruelled by injury as well.

It's not as bad as people like to think. The worst thing is that we blew our chance with this group in 2023.

So in summary, lose TDK, JSOS and Walsh and it's not that bad?

I think it's pretty bad if we intend on being competitive in the next couple of years minimum.

It's not a catastrophe, no, losing others would hurt us more. You're talking about a ruckman and two players who can't stay on the park.

Yeah, fair enough. But you can't get blood out of a stone neither.
All good a well to turn it on the playing group but you need the cattle with quality and to get that we're gonna have to have a big list cleanout at the end of the season.
I’m sure we’ll be able to find one or 2 more contested beasts to assist - that should do the job with our game plan.

Agree Juz but it seems the club isn’t interested in being ‘competitive’. Be like me and become sarcastic a little - makes life a little better, I think. ;)

Yep- 2023 was a missed opportunity

Not to mention 2024 and 2025
Nope, the back half of 24 was hugely disappointing, but '23 was the year. We were a game away from a Grand Final, playing at our best at the right end of the season.
I never thought we'd win a premiership in 25. I thought there'd be a finals appearance, though. None of us saw this year coming.

Mate, nothing from nothing is nothing....

How much has those 3 really helped us in the last couple of years?
Walsh and JSOS hardly on the park and TDK had a decent start to the year and has been unsighted since

I reckon we'll be ok , even if we lose Charlie

Im over our guns not putting in....whether by injury or attitude..

De Koning was one of our best players in that purple patch we had last year.

He’s been pretty mediocre since early this year cause he’s clearly stopped caring and it has affected our performance big time.

Just because Walsh has been crueled by injury doesn’t mean it isn’t a loss. He’s a gun when fit and we clearly miss him.

If we lose them and a JSOS our list next year will look terrible compared to 2023.

Cripps, Curnow, Weitering etc aren’t getting any younger.

I’m not sure where this magical improvement is meant to come from if you just lose all these key players when your list is already flawed and lacking depth.

All depends on what we can replace them with?
If it’s kids, then may hurt us.
But if there good mature players we can jag then I reckon we might be ok juzz
If the players who are rumoured to be leaving do leave, that means over the past year we've lost:

  • Martin
  • Cuningham
  • Marchbank
  • Owies
  • JSOS
  • TDK
  • Doc
  • Acres?
  • Walsh?
  • Charlie?
  • Harry?

And so far we've only replaced them with Haynes and a bunch of pimple faced kids. Granted those gone the end of 2024 were mostly injury plagued, but you can't take that much talent and experience out of a list and think it's not going to affect overall performance.

It appears JSOS and TDK are gone, question marks over a few others....but if we lose one or two of those with question marks and make the decision to hit the draft hard again like the last few years rather than trade, we'll be in all sorts.

I'm sure that Wright and Austin have a strategy in place, but hope like hell we're targeting some quality to fill those voids. Not sure if the Vossy news will have any effect on luring players across or retaining some of our own - but I reckon we'll need to strap ourselves in this trade period.
