Going by this forums standards calling an ex player a dud is pretty tame l would thinkGarbage from you Coach B ...
FYI, LOB is related to Soap but that's beside the point.
Next time, just do the comparison to Holmes and Dempsey!
IIRC, similar story about a couple of senior players (Simpson, Murphy?) bagging Lucas at training. The Prendercast guys relayed a story where Acres and Gov were light-heartedly having a go at Skull O'Keefe and another player doing extra drills of some sort (they stressed- very much a joke). Apparently Jagga walked up and said 'This is why we are shit !'
Yep. Fancy an 18 year old in his first year having to highlight such a point. The Prendercast guys relayed a story where Acres and Gov were light-heartedly having a go at Skull O'Keefe and another player doing extra drills of some sort (they stressed- very much a joke). Top-20 get locked in for 3yrs initially. Since H.Reidās draft.Ah didnāt know that.
I know a player from Freo. He was saying that Pat Voss said the same stuff was happening at Essendon with older players always subtly/jokingly digging young players about doing "extra's". Whereas at Freo he noticed a very distinct "all in together" mentality when he arrived.
No idea about the veracity of the McGovern/Acres claim, but it doesn't shock. The "feel" of Ess and Carl for many years has been Country Club, position protecting, senior players.
It was no doubt a joke, but might reveal an underlying attitude. "Dont try to hard or you'll make us look bad".
Not going to hang them for it but pretty cool if Jagga said something.
I think for a long time we've had many players just happy to be playing AFL. Earning good money to kick a ball around. And thats enough for them. Not wanting to make the extra sacrifices to be great.
Judd said it in his book even from his time at the club.
Can't stand it.
I think even Charlie was one of those players which is why im happy to see the back of him.
All good and well to be elite by foot. But firstly you need to win the ball. Gut running, competitiveness, willing to put you body on the line, which he has in spades.Hey Soap, great that this discussion is being had in November and not in April!
I agree with your point about HB v wing, the wing should have better than average kicks who can kick around corners and have the ability to change direction at speed, both of which Ollie doesn't have, IMHO.
His stats went up playing off HB but as a rebounding defender, they need to be more damaging than a 20m kick sideways.
I've not rated him since his first year, the main reason is that I expect my wingers to be elite by foot or elite in the air, that's a minimum for a quality side in my eyes. I suppose that's the main issue, quality side, which we are not.
I'm a big fan of Chesser and he was definitely pursued by our recruiters from a while out (early in the season), clearly to fix our kicking issues off the right-hand side of the ground. That leaves Ollie with only a HB (right-hand side) spot which might be filled with a better kicker or a stronger defender, either way, I think Ollie will be on the fringes if we have a full list to pick from, IMHO.
I think it will be Ollie v Ollie for that HB spot and I know where my money is going!
And thatās exactly why we should āhang themā for it.
Use these 2 to make an example and set the new standards.
The times right with the current influx of youth and if Voss wonāt drive it ⦠he can join them

Our issue last year was not Ollie and his foot skills. It was players like Acres, Docherty, Saad, TDK slamming it on there boot under perceived pressure. Small forwards not able to get separation to get clean ball. Ollie was atleast getting separation lowering his eyes and trying to hit up targets. Sure he butchered a few in the process, but was least of our issues.

You must not have been watching much football last season to have Acres ahead of Ollie. You should also seperate the mids from wings in the discussion. Cripps for instance will not play wing so there no value in your assessment of where Ollie fitsNewy, Saad, Cowan, Weiters, Haynes, Florent, McGovern, Carroll, Dean and O'Farrell later on, will be first choice backs.
Cotts, Smith, Walsh, Cerra, Cripps, Hewett, Lord and Acres will be our first choice mids and wings.
Can't see Ollie preferred over any of them if all fit.
I think JSOS and Doc may have been contributors tooIt was no doubt a joke, but might reveal an underlying attitude. "Dont try to hard or you'll make us look bad".

You are making the assumption that we traded in Florent and Chesser to replace Ollie? More like Docherty, Acres and Saad replacements, and hopefully upgrades on Wilson, Boyd and Lucas. So why got out and chase 2 players that will play in his position then???![]()

Canāt disagree more on Ollie v Acres.Acres plays on the left, Ollie plays on the rightā¦
Acres will play as he is better overhead, stronger over the ball and more penetrating with his kicking.
Ollie now sits the the HB cue, just doesnāt have the polish or standout ability (kick, mark, elite speed) to play wing.
Canāt have good ordinary players on the wings in this day and age, they need to have one of the above 3 traits.
His 1st 2 years with us were great. Has proven he can perform in the big moments. I'll give him some slack for his 2025.I donāt know whether or not Acresā attitude is poor. Heās obviously a bad kick. But he also had a bulging disc in the offseason which would have hampered him substantially. If heās able to manage that condition through this offseason then I think he will be capable of reverting to his 2023 foform.
The admiration I had for Acres playing through pain during that final series became completely undone with the photo of him and TDK in the Geelong changerooms after their finals win with a shiteating grin and a Dangerfield badge.I donāt know whether or not Acresā attitude is poor. Was this actually happening? No reports other than speculative media post BA being (rightfully) dropped.Canāt disagree more on Ollie v Acres.
Acres went at just over 50% efficiency by foot, Ollie at 70%. Ollie covered the ground much better than Acres last year. Acres goalkicking was horrible last year 28% lol, and the smart ass grin every time he butchered a shot for goal. We tried to shop Acres around and there were not takers so we are stuck with him.

I get that he seems a happy go lucky kind of person, but wtf was going through his mind???
Could you even imagine what the reaction of Voss and Wright would have been seeing that image as they're trying to pick up the pieces of a disastrous season. Reckon he was lucky he still had 2 years left on his contract.

After everything that gets said on this forum we suddenly become more aware of our language because a poster is related to the player. In this instance l just donāt agree with that.
It doesnāt appear to be a principled position, rather just one used when itās more personal.
