We're never trading Jackson. Even if he wanted to be traded, we would say no—I don't think he even wants to be traded. There is no like-for-like replacement in the whole league, other than possibly the De Koning brothers who we could not accomodate within the salary cap. We are not in a rebuild, we are beginning contention; we cannot trade the here-and-now for draft picks to try to find a notoriously slow-developing, unicorn-rarity competent ruck-forward like Luke Jackson. It would be catastrophic to our team build and the finals challenge we plan on mounting over the next 4ish seasons while Alex Pearce is still around.

What is actually happening is his new manager is convinced Freo can be leveraged into renegotiating his deal (and wants a cut of the increase). Possibly, word is out that we're not chasing Warner this year and Jackson wants to vacuum up some of that excess salary cap. This seems, uh, unlikely. The only real leverage is what the manager can manufacture through planted stories; Jackson surely doesn't want to deal long-term with this tension at a club he cannot get out of, even if he wanted to.

Regardless, do not start planning eventualities for Jackson departing. Again, even if he asked out, we would not let it happen. He is a crucial structural player.

I think a good way to look at post Reids blossoming is -

Do we think Melbourne would accept pick 9 for Koz? I reckon it would get the deal most of the way. Maybe some filagree in the later rounds.

Would we accept pick 9 for Reid? Probably not.

Interesting. Circumstances dictate a fair bit in trades, especially contracts. We need to overpay for Pickett.

If Reid said he wanted to go home and won't be staying long term, we'd take pick 9 and move on. If he gets to the end of the year with 20 games under his belt and rising star credentials, I guess we'd chase a sweetener.

I have heard this said before a number of times in the past by different people and it's always made me wonder… there must be some truth to it


The reality is as long as Sean Darcy is at Freo then Luke wont be the number one ruck. So I cant see how that matches up with his desire to be a number one ruckman?

Maybe Jackson should actually show something as a ruck then?
