Petracca talk is interesting and optimistic. Not sure where I sit on it. Some considerations

- I reckon the list needs a stoppage winner, first possession guy in the midfield mix. Second preference would be a big bodied defensive stopper (but think Peatling in an expanded role would be fine at either of these). Berry isn't it. Soligo's solid on the outside and has some class. Dawson's versatile, but more offensive minded. Rankine is an offensive weapon. We need to compliment what we already have.

- Swann seems adamant on speeding the game up and reducing stoppages. Last disposal out of bounds, 5 on the bench, etc. etc. - reducing total stoppages will make them less important. So a little less need for the above & outside class & running power/defensive running becomes more important.

- Petracca is neither a dominant first possession guy, solid defensive guy, or solid runner.

- Petracca isn't the same player he once was, but we've seen with old guys (even Tex at our end), they can take a couple of pre-seasons to recover from injuries and get back to their best. We write them off as over the hill but then with some continuity they have a resurgence - Gunston, Pendles, Sidebottom, Howe, Melksham spring to mind. So he might get back to his best and be a real difference maker.

I reckon if he's there, we go for it. You've gotta be better than 17 teams to win one, so swing for the fences and don't play it safe & be 'a good team for a long time'. Especially with this draft being a bit rubbish. But I'd hope we're working options to look at more affordable players that might compliment what we already have a little better too - creativity and pressure in the forward line, stoppage craft/defense through the middle, and probably a better distributor in defence. Guys like Rowbottom & Davies spring to mind.

I dont think it is

There is a post by Scorpus about our age/list and its full of long term hope but its also shaky if the underneath foundations arent solid

Well time isnt on my side

We have a list - we have seen we can match it with the best - lets see what falls out

I prefer Petracca over Oliver but I am also getting desperate for a flag now
Remove Tex and Smith from our team on the weekend and you remove the average age of 34 and 287 games.

Time is there, most of our current side is signed up to 2029, 4 were in the 22 under 22 side and a 23 year old was the full forward for the AA team and a 24 & 25 year olds were AA squad members.

I think it brings experience and that’s a lot in itself
Next year we get Bailey FA
Give us a couple years for the flag
I think its great experience and a powerful midfielder in his prime etc BUT at what cost? this year and next years first rounder for a guy who will be a 3-4 year player? I don't like it.

We played him multiple times with zero performance measures, and was semi final emergency.

Of course he's shocked.
How he was an emergency after his performance v Norwood in the midfield in the semi final has me stuffed.

Murphy spent more time crawling on his knees watching Norwood mids streaming away from clearances than he did actually standing.

Because youve always got a forward as an emergency, thats the sole reason.

Here me out, Why not go for both Petracca and Clarry, sell the vision. Getting Petracca would be the best modern day fix to our Tex dilema, he would be our 3rd tall and rotate with dawson into the middle. Alongside this putting clarry on ball, soligo, curtin, taylor, Sid, Peatling, Rankine, Rachele, this looks way better.

I think this year pick 14, next year 1, Sam Berry & Chayce Jones plus maybe a future 2nd get it all done.

Petracca (and Oliver) have shown they can't really go forward and have an impact.. Both are exclusively midfielders.

Do we though? We need a first possession midfielder. Trac hasnt been that for a little while now, and he's on the wrong end of 30. I know the Oliver deal seems to be going cold, but Id much rather Clarry than Petracca and the deal would be far better for our draft/trade capital.

Petracca can provide a presence up there, crash a pack etc. But its him in the midfield that allows guys like Dawson to go forward more, as well as bringing in Ah Chee (hopefully)
Agreed, it brings a different dynamic up forward, swapping with Dawson and even Pedlar in midfield allows them to be the 3rd target up forward without Tex and Ah Chee brings flexibility to use Rankine and Rachele a bit through there as well. Keeping Soligio, Peatling, Curtin and Draper as the others - it could be exciting if it comes true.

I get it.

If Petracca can get us to a flag next year I am all for it, but I don't see it personally.

Our list is in a fantastic position. Our solid reliable players are <30 for the large part and our top end talent is 25 and below.

Those real match winning players are Rachele, Rankine and Thilthorpe + Draper.

Im not overly phased which one it is, just get one of them.

You're right about the first possession mid though.

To be fair, Petracca 30 at the start of 2026, I feel like that has to be on the right side of 30! 🤣

That would be the big thing. Petracca is going to take out 2 years of draft picks for us. Oliver we may be able to get for not even a 1st rounder if you believe those rumours.

We still need to get more youth in (and correctly develop them) to the side, especially around some key areas where we will likely lose some depth this year.

Can't see Petracca being worth more than one first round pick

Would do petracca but haven’t heard it being a realistic option at all and also struggle to see him leaving vic. Feels big time as if naming lots of clubs to create competition to secure greater value.

only way I see a midfielder of need come to crows is to look at clubs who are desperately bad and leaking players (Essendon, Carlton, both of which don’t have anyone I see coming to SA) or players currently sitting on the 2nd line or just outside the midfield due to competition for spots in an already bloated a grade line (GWS, GCS, lions)— I would give it all for someone like Sam Flanders who fills most needs and is ready to explode but won’t overtake Rowell or Anderson or Miller to be the number one guy.

Did he get moved out of the midfield? His average dropped 12 disposals from 24 to 25
