This is probably the worst loss of my 46 year lifetime as a supporter. I could handle getting done in finals we were expected to win only to be beaten by a better team or copping a thrashing when we were clearly not good enough. Tonight they should have won easily but there was lazy, entitled attitude I don’t think I’ve ever seen before. after all the losses over the years a chance to make a statement. Instead no desire, no drive. The group has talent but they don’t have the mental strength and desire to win.

I’ve said it before but this season is a referendum on the rebuild. If we were any good we’d be top 4 and contending for a flag. If we miss the 8 we have to accept that they aren’t good enough. I thought in 2023 we had finally learnt how to win. 2024 was on the right path until injuries and stupidity cost us. But a performance like that makes me think the group just aren’t up to it. Ten years into a rebuild and aside from a 3 month run in 2023 we’ve lost more games than we have won. The evidence is now compelling. We aren’t that good.

The thing that stood out for me was the lack of spirit, effort and unity.

We looked disinterested - even when we were winning, we weren’t there for each other. And then our play resembled this - dysfunctional, selfish, sloppy. It looked like we’d never played a game of footy together before.

One thing I’m pondering is whether The Age articles brought some old shit up between the players… and/or potentially there is more to the Elijah story.

Another possibility is that we’re scarred from the final (on top of last 20 years) and don’t believe that we’re any good.

Conditions weren’t helpful and generally greasy/wet conditions close the gap between teams.

Either we took it easy and paid the price or there is something amiss in the playing group imo.

We’ll learn more in the next couple of weeks.

We’re probably not a premiership team (there are obvious holes), and we may well miss the finals, but we should be a hell of a lot better than what we dished up tonight.

I’m looking for positives here- the best that i can come up with is that based on the comments here, it is going to be easier to get a good seat for future games

Just so I’m not being all negative, I really liked the development of Lachie Cowan. He’ll be great for the Devils.

Another thing that really hurt us tonight was our inaccuracy vs their apparent inability to miss...

4 behinds and 2 of them were rushed.
First quarter.
Kemp marks 25 out directly in front of.

All he has to do is kick over the man on the mark.

Runs in and dinks out to the right like he’s kicking 55 mts and looking for distance.

Drags it left.

What the **** is that. What ****ing bullshit is that!!

Need to watch the full replay to get all the angles but I thought TDK was great, and Weitering. Cripps worked hard but I actually felt (from my seat at the game) that his 32 possies flattered him a little and that he was decently contained by the close work of Hopper and KMac who seemed to be tagging him.

Camporeale looked good too and you definitely missed Curnow although I'd say we missed Balta as well etc.

Honestly didn't expect that. Was expecting a 60+ loss. I think the early lead maybe made the Blues complacent and when the pressure came I didn't think they handled it very well. Tiger kids surprisingly hungry and enthusiastic.

Can see why there was talk of him going for peanuts to the saints ..
Really want him to come good but too much of a goof …

Mcgovern must be dropped

The bloke is the most conditional footballer I’ve ever seen. He doesn’t play on anyone and shirks contests routinely. After a putrid loss like that heads need to role. I’d be making an example of him. Sadly I genuinely question whether Voss has the guts to drop a senior player.

Shocking.
Although he should have been kicking from the goal line.

He has always been like this but always escapes scrutiny… media should be all over him long ago …

It’s not really that surprising. He did the same thing against the Saints last year which effectively cost us that game and should have cost us a spot in the finals.

Kemp needs to show something this year otherwise he might be out the door at the end of the year. Failed as a backman and can’t kick goals from 20 metres out.

I'll start with some positives:

  • Thought Ollie was really good. Ran hard, presented well, tackled and used it well.
  • JSOS, plays with heart and looked good at either end.
  • Doc coming on and doing Doc things.
  • I liked what I saw from Lord.
  • Weiters
  • Thought Haynes looked OK early on but fell away drastically after that.
  • It's only Round 1.
  • Brisbane were able to turn it around last year (clutching at straws here).

The not so positive:

  • Horrible forward 50 entries yet again.
  • So fumbly.
  • We played about 1 quarter plus 5 minutes of good footy, no where near good enough.
  • The Tigers wanted it more.
  • Walsh, Gov, H and a Cotts way off their best.
  • Forward line looked so disorganised.
  • Harry needs way more mongrel..he has the size and needs to use it.
  • Why was Lord subbed off? Could have easily picked 5 players to get subbed instead.
  • Doc should have started on the field, and/or should have been brought into the game earlier.
  • This team plays like they do not care.

2000% this.

Especially bad since weve had people on SEN all week saying how much they cant wait now footies back. What an absolute farce.

Its the same 4 or 5 blokes doing all the work (Crippa, TDK, Weiters) every week. This was the worst game ive every seen Harry play. He wasnt just having a bad day, he looked like hed already had enough and didnt want to be there.

Something is fundamentally broken at our club, and its not minor.

25 consecutive years of membership this year, and not even a mailmerge email saying thanks. Nothing. I didnt want a freebee but acknowledgement would have been nice. This club is rotten to the core and ive had enough.

It's damning one of our best players at either end in this match was a guy just back after doing a knee.

Jack, you can hold your head high tonight. Almost everyone else can **** off and have a cold hard look at yourselves.

Just got home from the game, haven’t read anything yet but, it’s a no brainer with all we that have experienced tonight was a complete shitshow…

Without a doubt the most insipid performance you could see from a team which is in its window, up against one that has just come off a successful reign including 3 premierships, whom have lost almost a full team of premiership players due to retirement and trades to other clubs…

First quarter in fairness was okay, some signs of good organised football, controlled the quarter, was expecting our system to step up in areas from the second quarter…

First half of the second quarter was some minimal improvement, mainly dominated the first part of the quarter with enough chances to be another 5 goals up, which may have made more of a difference to the overall situation of the game…

Big difference after halftime, they changed positioning and setups which started winning the contested ball/contests through the midfield and in general play, we allowed them space and and extra numbers within the zones, to spread overlap and run the the ball far too easily…

I’m baffled by how well we were far more defensively sound in 23, we seemed to have the beginnings of the defensive fundamentals that would evolve more across all lines, then adding the creative side of ball movement across all of our lines, particularly rebounding defensively and forward finishing…

This players have shown on occasions that they are capable of playing well, but I’m still not convinced that we have evolved anywhere enough with our coaching methods with some of the most basic fundamentals of the game, we should be much better progressed across areas now than we are…

First game of the season, all the improvements look good in preseason but there’s been at times a clear lack of structuring, setups, positioning and accountability across the board, the centre/forwards lack of creativity along with the same crap standard bombing is extremely horrendous and simply embarrassing…

Love this club, will support them unconditionally, and will continue to rock up every week. But that second half was embarrassing. Never seen so many players struggle with the basics for as long as we did.

I get the Voss criticism, but players being unable to hit 20 metre kicks to wide open players is beyond unacceptable. Some of the leaders were atrocious, and their efforts reflected how the team was performing.

Really don’t know where to go from here. Is it the coaches? The players? The culture being set from the top? The head of footy? All of the above? Probably requires clearer heads than what people have now to make those judgements. Will be desperate to change things before next week, otherwise they will completely lose the fanbase
