I'm staggered Francis Evans has made three AFL lists now there's far more talented mature players in every state league that never get a look in.
True..
Although I don't think Francis of Assisi would have even helped last night..

a brilliant quarter, break away from the opponent. opposition adjusts, we tread water for 1-2.5 quarters and then break off the shackles to try and win back the lead in the last half of the last quarter. it happens all the time. we're beating our head against the brick wall until those last 15 minutes of a game.

After Q1, the Tiges put constant pressure on the ball carrier.

We simply couldn't handle or out-maneuverer it.
That pretty much sums it up.

The turnovers, fumbles etc. comes down to Richmond applying more pressure on the ball carrier and on the player receiving the ball and our inability to deal with it.

From where I sat it seemed Motlop was always under pressure whenever he got close to the ball.

Harry looked lost and his opponent read the ball better and easily outmarked him a couple of times. Quite possibly one of our most overrated and overpaid players if I’m brutally honest. JSOS switched forward late in the game looked more capable of competing and marking than H did for the whole game.

He has a better footy IQ then Evans and Motlop would have been in more advantageous position and is a better overhead mark then both!!!! Agreed yesterday the delivery was atrocious but that creativity and footy IQ is now gone for good....we have no proper game plan anyway no matter who you put in with no game plan we are cooked either way!!!

If you or anyone thinks that a basic uncontested mark, or a simple handball is the responsibility of an AFL coach, we will end up sacking anyone that walks in the door
Of course it is. Confident players don't make mistakes at the rate we do. The odd skill error is not a coaches fault. It becomes their responsibility when it's a pattern. It's been a pattern. His refusal to focus on fundamentals, cohesion, calm and confidence lead to abysmally poor executions on the field.

That sort of argument you've provided is just an exaggeration. Haynes was and has shown to be a ****ing freak of an intercept mark. Marking is not an age defined skill, skills don't evaporate. They can decay and they decay faster without attention, but more importantly mental state - panic, confusions etc readily destroy the skill executions in game. Which is what we saw and what is most controllable by the coach seeing as it's his training that sets up the game days. It's his program.

Train how you play is the oldest adage in any sport.

Happens all the time. I said this many times last year. I am tired of going to games, watching a player run through the middle and BOMB it instead of hitting players that are in space on their own

I just don't get it
Clearly isn't a focal point of training at all. These are behaviours because they're trained to be. Or they're instructions to always take the long option or smthing.

Or they're not listening to the real instructions so drop them.

Either way it goes to the same end point

Motlop
Kemp
Lord
Ollie
Fogarty
Cottrell

It's said after every premiership that the winning team got there because their bottom 6 'best 22' players improved significantly. We simply don't have the depth - Need at least four of these young lads to seriously step up. Otherwise? We're battling with St Kilda & Adelaide for the 10th spot on the ladder.

The other 'passage' that infuriated me no end and occurred before the rot really set in was Walsh out the back of a stoppage about 65m out from our defensive goal. He had runners clear both sides of him and short kicks to the attacking side of the contest AND no immediate pressure. But he turned side on and heaved a hack dump kick forward....?

Like....?!?

Not surprised (and I'm not saying he's a great coach), but my point was his coaching priorities, and the head coach sets the tone for the club.
Footy fundamentals is his top priority, and the Filth do the fundamentals very well for their talent level. That list had no business winning a flag, but they got there.
This is the only post we need to focus on - it explains our deficiencies perfectly.

We can argue about who's more at fault of the players or coaches til the cows come home.

The fact of the matter is though that last night, they ALL failed in one way or another.

My most disappointing from last night was Motlop.
For me it was a collective disappointment from our so called experienced players like Harry, Fogarty, Williams on the forward line (which rendered it useless) and defenders like Haynes and McGovern our star interceptors and ball deliverers.

That play on the boundary line where they’re on the ground tangled up and a Richmond player just picks it up and kicks to a player in the goal square - was comical and embarrassing for two key defenders.

Think Gov should be dropped for next week, but in that instance, he got tackled without the ball.

The comical bit was Haynes imagining contact and spilling the simple mark.

Richmond going tall in defence and being young and nimble was the undoing of us. Carlton having no forwards was the main reason for our failing. Our listbuild as I was going on about back in 2022, is failing us and will fail us more so. Too heavy, big and slow in the midfield and not quick up forward either. Lacking genuine forwards. Lack of pace is a worry. The game has gone past us and so are many teams, we have been too slow to adjust it seems. Recruitment has failed badly to supply the team with quality forwards and genuine pace. We could still make finals but it's going to come from Harry McKay and Curnow having strong seasons and both look to be starting the year poorly.

Cripps - He was good but not great. Went forward but failed to impact there. Played his usual game dominating the contests but wasn't too influential.

DeKoning - got some big numbers but Nankervis was good as well. Failing to defend against Nankervis is a weakness of DeKoning who is a terrible defender and spoiler. Played well but so did his opponent.

Cerra - He got enough of the ball and laid tackles. He just doesn't have the hurt factor of the real good A grade players.

Walsh - Same goes for Walsh. His intensity looked off. Looked a few steps behind every other player out there. Got enough of the ball but again, no hurt factor.

Hewett - Much the same, got plenty of ball and wasn't overly influential.

Weitering - BOG easily.

Saad - He looks in good shape and played well. A little rusty but he's a damn good player.

Acres - He was solid. Nothing to not in regard to his impact but solid.

Camporeale - He just looks to be a natural wingman with a good footy IQ. He's physically ready for AFL. He just lacks polish. His disposal needs some work. But that goes for a lot of the team.

Hollands - Found a lot of the ball. Would like to see him use it better. He will never play an inside role, hands aren't good enough.

Haynes - Read the ball well but ball handling was terrible. Seemed to crack under pressure and drop simple marks. I'd give him another go because he did everything else well but this part of his game was terrible.

Cowan - I thought he was good. Will only get better but he was pretty solid out there.

Silvagni - Didn't start well. Failed to read players running through the contest well and cut them off. Came good as the game went on. Just something you may see from an inexperienced defender. Should have been thrown forward this game as we had no forwards.

McKay - How has he come back too light and weak? He's a key forward, not a winger. Got monstered by a 23 year old defender in Blight. Worst on ground.

McGovern - Had a quieter day. Skills look a bit rough and has not hit round 1 the way he would like.

Lord - I didn't notice if he was tagging or not. Not a high possession game but plenty of tackling as expected. Thought he was ok.

Docherty - Came on late and got a lot of it but didn't influence the game all that much.

Fogarty - Did absolutely nothing apart from a few lose ball gets. Another player who is not a real forward.

Cottrell - Also did absolutely nothing after kicking an early goal.

Williams - Also did very little.

Motlop - Did nothing.

Kemp - Did nothing much. Opponents just too big, too good. Got stuck as a deep forward for too long.

Evans - Looks a handy VFL player.

Yes and understand what you are saying. But what have they been doing for the last 4 years if not setting non-negotiables
Exactly.

We had a piss poor finish to the season last year. We’ve had 5 months to reset, work on basic skills, improve game plan and ball movement, and affirm Non-Negotiables.

What we served up last night just felt like a continuation of the crap style and effort put out in the second half of last year, and is an indictment on the players and the coaches.
