The win against WCE was very good. I know they were bad but we were in real trouble going over there with injury

We played our best football on the back of Lord Binns Kemp Durdin Ollie and a Moir cameo

We played smart running football.

I find it odd that certain players, often McGovern, get singled out for a hammering by punters when the reality was that about 20 of the 23 blokes picked Thursday didn't turn up....

As others have said, that's more likely cultural than about an individual.... and needs to be addressed. Fast.

Pretty sure McG isn’t the only player that’s been singled out for last Thurs debacle.

He along with Haynes were poor last Thurs as many have pointed out. Our forward line players were also practically useless namely Motlop, Harry, Evans, Fogarty and Williams.

I think even the boot studder got a whack on the way through for our players slipping over..

Fcuking up Together should be our new motto this year.

The only thing Lord lacks now is experience and getting used to playing mid minutes for a full game

He has a great engine and is ready. He just needs the time and experience and not much. Keep playing him and it will pay off quickly

But where does he play if Hewett, Walsh, Cripps and Cerra are in the team as well? He’s not quite ready to knock one of those guys out of the team.

I think he’d be better served playing full games in the 2s really well and then coming in replace one of them when the opportunity arises. If he does well then the spot is his.

I really didn’t like him being subbed out on Thursday because it’s not good for his development but I understand why the coaches did it.

Look at Knevitt from Geelong. Made to earn his stripes in the reserves for a good 2 years. Comes into the team in year 3 and he’s ready to make a contribution.

Honestly this team is underachieving.

The list is better than what they're dishing up. Plenty of top end talent and appropriate role players, I had Carlton finishing top 6 and being potentially contenders.

Too early to tell for the flag but I'm tipping GWS or Brisbane at this stage.

I think back to Richmond 13-15 and then the '16 flop prior to '17 flag. Is Carlton able to achieve success with this list? I'd have thought so personally.

I've also been asked about my thoughts so I thought I'd write a little summary of where my head is at based on my own thoughts and what I've seen posted elsewhere.

On the Coaches​

• Michael Voss: Micromanaging to the nth degree. Players aren't allowed to play with natural instinct or flair.
• Line Coaches: Incompetent at every level. Poor communication and instructions that leave players in no man's land.
• Internal Disagreements: There's a clear disconnect between the line coaches and Voss/Hansen. The players seem to align more with Voss and Hansen, which speaks volumes about where the breakdown is happening.

On List Management​

• Lack of Pace & Skill: After last season, Voss asked for more pace and skill. Agresta and Austin responded by drafting Jagga Smith. Nobody’s fault he got injured, but expecting him to be the sole solution was absurd.
• Key Defensive Help: Weitering needed support. Instead, Agresta and Austin identified Haynes—who has the same strengths and weaknesses as McGovern, Kemp, and Silvagni. Not a genuine KPD. A desperate, misguided signing.
• Defensive Void: With Newman's injury, we've lost a reliable medium-small defender. Cowan and Ollie Hollands—while promising—are being asked to do a job they should be growing into over the next year, not forced into immediately.
• List Holes Unfilled: We've lost best-22 talent and haven’t replaced any of them. Austin and Agresta are simply not competent.

On Team Cohesion​

• The list itself isn’t inherently bad. There are plenty of solid AFL-level players.
• The issue? They don’t fit together. The squad lacks the right blend of attributes to compete in the modern game.
• You could put almost any coach in charge of this group, and they’d struggle. It’s not just about effort or tactics—it’s about trying to make incompatible pieces fit together. It doesn’t work.

On the Head of Football​

• The buck stops here.
• Coaching and list management issues are ultimately the responsibility of the Head of Football.
• If there’s rot, it starts at the top. The problems we're seeing aren't new. They’re systemic and stem from leadership failings at the highest level.

• The coach has identified the issues—Blind Freddy could do that—but the solutions have been woeful.

Lloyd has been at the club for 7-8 years over which time we’ve achieved very little. IMO there is no reason not to sack a Head of Football mid season. That way Wright can begin the search now.

Disagree. No team has every position on the field adequately filled. Melbourne haven’t had a genuine quality KPF since 2019. Doesn’t mean their list manager sucks, just means other needs have to be filled beforehand. You can’t fix everything in one go, and you need to have the right players come up and available. Can’t just pick up 4/10 players because they fill a need, cause then they’re just taking up a list spot. Lloyd on the other hand, I completely agree with

Doesn’t mean their list manager sucks, just means other needs have to be filled beforehand. You can’t fix everything in one go, and you need to have the right players come up and available. Can’t just pick up 4/10 players because they fill a need, cause then they’re just taking up a list spot. Lloyd on the other hand, I completely agree with

In his first year as List Manager he got rid of McCreadie, Ben Silvagni, Hugh Goddard and Callam Moore. We then lost Jones at the start of the 2022 season. That’s 5 key position players. He brought in 2 replacement… a busted Oscar McDonald and an unproven Lewis Young. He delisted the right names but he basically cut our key position player stocks by 3 spots. Even if you argue we had 2 too many key position players on the list at the time we were still 1 short. In 2022 acknowledging we were short key defenders he brought in an injury prone Sam Durdin via the MSP.

In the interim we had to re purpose Kemp as a (undersized) key defender to cover mid season after Voss had shown a desire to play him as a half forward in his first pre season. All the time of course he held on to the mis guided hope that Caleb Marchbank wouldn’t break in the hope he could play as a (undersized) key defender. Last season even the media started to cotton about how short we were down back. Austin’s response was to draft Harry O’Farrell but delist Sam Durdin (fair enough) so still no increase in list spots assigned to key position players. Now we are repurposing Silvagni as…you guessed it…another undersized defender.

Couple the above with the absolute failings to improve our small forward stacks and IMO Austin has to go. Voss cops a lot of flak - and a lot of it is fair - but he has been coaching with one arm tied behind his back. Austin should be firmly in the gun.

We had 25 more inside 50s.
We had 7 more scores.
We gifted them 5 goals through atrocious defensive turnovers.

Our pressure really dropped off half way through the 2nd quarter, which was really poor, but it was more our sloppiness that cost us the game.

For the first quarter and a half, Richmond were more than happy to let us dictate terms from the backline. And when Carlton gets to set up the way we want, we’re nearly impenetrable. Weitering was everywhere, picking off intercept marks like it was a training drill.

But the moment Richmond flicked the switch and lifted their tempo, we had no answers. Suddenly, our midfield looked sluggish, and our backline—stacked with talls—felt way too slow to react.

Now, I’m not exactly leading the fan club for Boyd, but right now, he looks like one of the few who can inject some much-needed skill and close that gap. If not against the Hawks, then soon.

When have they played to their ability? Only a few ever do. That is the problem. How can you be considered a good player if your effort and performance is inconsistent and conditional. Having skills doesn’t make you a good player unless you can consistently play at a level that helps your team perform. Too many looking through rose coloured glasses around here.
