I don’t watch enough VFL to be able to counter this bit hopefully he makes the step up. He looked really promising from what I saw early on. A promising apprentice to DC is something we really need in the works
We desperately need to trade a back up ruck in this year.

Am I the only one who thinks Steene will be up against it, doesn’t put up great numbers in vfl. Bulldogs Lachlan Smith is 2 years younger and puts up huge numbers
I'm not sure about up against it per se - we seem to clearly be making a conscious effort to develop him into more of a ruck-fwd hybrid than someone like Smith, who seems to be Moyle-like in being a clear cut above the VFL as a premier ruck (who happens to kick a goal or two).

Steene's games against Brisbane, Essendon & the Bullants have all been promising for me. Primed to take over from Cox's fringe squad role next year I reckon.

He got dominated by a 19 year old Lachlan Smith 2 weeks ago though
I think the argument is that it isn't linear, particularly for talls. Sean Darcy came on much quicker than Tristan Xerri at the same age

Right now I am leaning towards the thought Pies will likely pick up a 24-25 year old ruck thats a lot closer to being AFL ready to cover Cox and McCarthy will replace Steene as the developing Ruck forward

It's very true development isnt linear (a concept foreign to north fans) but I still cant say I am high on him as a ruck prospect as I have big doubts he will ever be competitive at the centre bounce at AFL level based on what I have seen of him in VFL. The example given is a reach imo as Xerri was behind Goldstein for a good while and Darcy has struggled badly with injury

You may be right - god knows I've spent enough time praying for Moyle. I'm just not sure we have the capital to do so given how precarious our KPD stocks are.

He may not be competitive at centre bounce, but structurally I think his ability to cover the ground and mark overhead holds him in good stead. He should get stronger through the core, which will help him hold his space. I don't think many teams roll out with too many genuine 2nd rucks these days - ground level competitiveness and the ability to hit packs seems most important.

McCarthy may well supplant him, but I want to keep him out of the ruck initially. At least until he's filled out and is kicking 40 goals a season as a permanent KPF

I don’t recall Smith winning a tap, then collecting the ground ball, snapping from a pocket to goal as Smit did in the 1st QTR of the VFL game.
The kid is RAW but with outstanding athleticism for his height and a bit of MONGREL which I love in a Ruckman.

I think Smit will definitely be a pie next year..

I agree with this, I think Smit deserves more time, I am not sold on Steene and think he will need to show big improvement over the next few months to stay. I think we need another one with real promise. Maybe the NGA guy will be that
If the game is moving to a 2nd Ruck that can also play fwd, then I think Steene has the potential to fill that role and so worth persisting with - he’s got good hands but Ruck craft needs tweaking.

I don't really think Moyle would be a good option for us anyway, he's 23 and if left he would want a team that needs a number 1 ruck. I can't see Cameron being done for the next 3 years at least, so having Steene and Smit at 21 and 19yo respectively suits us better, Steene has shown some good signs in the VFL this season and I don't really expect too much from Smit this year anyway.

As far as ruck depth goes, I'd be more keen on just keeping on Mason Cox as a backup for next year over delisting him and picking up a state league Ruck. At least with Mason we have a guy that knows our system, can compete up forward if necessary (although his form isn't the best right now), and as a ruck is actually pretty decent. Yeah he's 34 but if he stays for that extra season it may be enough time for Steene to be able to compete in the seniors.

I don't see Moyle fitting either. It is more that a) I want to get one back for Witts, and b) my love for Moyle began prior to Cameron ascending to this incredible level.

I am happy to be patient with Steene & Smit, as I will be when McCarthy joins next year.

I would be happy to retain Cox on chips, but I am prepared for him to retire.

Tend to agree. Needs to come on this year, or, show that he has some special potential. The problem, is that he is not quite big enough for a ruck who is not particularly athletic, and not quite athletic enough for a key forward. Looks like a very good VFL player. Smitt on the other hand, may not be much taller, however is far more athletic. His issue is, he still seems to be working out what professional football is.

Go and get Sam Flanders

Had a terrible preseason and getting absolutely no opportunity with that stacked team.

When he was flying last year he was in the top 2 players.

When the list manager says we look forward to big Oscar's development as part of our future ruck stocks I'd say that's a pretty good endorsement of his ability as a ruckman.

Contracted to 2027 so won’t be cheap.

Cameron or bust at moment. Cox is finished and the other 2 won’t be afl quality rucks
We’re not wasting trade capital on another Ruck - Cox has still got another year, and is far more useful than the narrative offered here by some.

And it’s way to early to judge Smit and Steene.

Sound reasoning.

As just mentioned, if we have spare capital would be far wiser to go after a young mid to complement Daici, Perryman, Long, McGuane, Harrison, Allan and Hayes.

We desperately need to trade a back up ruck in this year.
Max Knobel. With Witts a couple years from pulling up stumps, Moyle on a long term deal and Read looking the perfect fwd/ ruck he’s going to be depth for a while. He’s looked much better than our two as a ruckman, but his marking is a ?.

I wouldn’t think so.

Also, for those discussing the likely exits this year… I think all of them are a chance if they’ve had enough but it sounds like they’ve mostly gone on record saying they’ve been begging Fly for another contract (Mihocek, Elliott) or that their plan was always to play as long as they could contribute (Sidey, Pendles).

I don’t see Mitchell retiring, assuming he isn’t about to have another setback with his foot. Could imagine that would ruin him mentally.

WHE I think we’d be happy enough to keep due to versatility and presumably low cost.

Cox again, low cost, effective ruck and forward backup. It would require Steene coming on strongly to finish the year for us to retire Cox, imo.

I think AJ, Macrae, Smit/Steene, Markov, Dean and one retirement (couldn’t say who yet) will be our changes.

Wouldn’t surprise to see someone like Ryan, Parker, Sullivan or Allan request a trade to a club offering better playing opportunities, also.
If we had to get rid of one of Smit, Steene or Cox for a shot at 2026 who would it be?

I’m struggling to remember any ruckman that was anywhere near ready at 21-22. Gawn, English, Grundy, Xerri etc, etc all really took 4 years plus to be consistent performers. The old fellas are way too cunning at the craft
Our number 1 man is another perfect example. I know you cant give them forever, but the fact is they do take time
