I like his development in a defensive role. Has shown tremendous improvement match to match and it’s not a role I’d imagine he’s ever had too much exposure in. Hopefully that improvement continues for the remainder of the season.

In terms of the draft, it’s actually (at least) 5 FS/NGA prospects we could look at. There’s a lot of focus on the big 3 but Lonie and Kerr can’t be dismissed. Difficulty is finding the list spots. Gets even more complicated if we want to retain 1 or both of Steele and Howes, and/or have a trade target in sight. Leppa and Cheesy has an interesting few months ahead of them.

I agree. We have many options. I'd definitely look at Kerr. Apparantely the SKOB president seems to think there is a chance we rookie him.

Re all the Bergman talk, he is an absolute elite defender. Greatat shutting players down as well as providing ball movement from hb.

Has only played in the midfield and has shown plenty of promise. Even when he first started playing footy as a forward he showed signs of being able to adapt to any position.

Definitely wouldn’t mind us giving him a crack in 2 years.

As they did a few weeks ago, the contracts of veterans Scott Pendlebury, Steele Sidebottom, Jeremy Howe, Will Hoskin-Elliott and Jamie Elliott remain the most intriguing watch. All five 2023 premiership players have been critical in the Magpies’ 12-2 run to start this season, and are all deserving of a one-year extension — something that continues to look more and more likely. Seven’s Mitch Cleary reported on Tuesday night that Elliott is in talks for a two-year deal, after a year that has so far yielded 37 goals and sees him sit fifth in the Coleman Medal race.

The retention of Brayden Maynard on a four-year deal was huge for club morale, and allows them more list certainty that may help them decide on the future of fellow senior players Mason Cox, Tom Mitchell and Oleg Markov. The aforementioned trio were all a part of the club’s 2023 premiership side, however injuries and the integration of youth make their futures harder to call than some other premiership teammates.

Still no genuine connections with rival players have been made for the upcoming off-season, and with star Darcy Cameron edging closer to staying at Magpieland as per Seven’s Ryan Daniels, there may be even less list turnover than first thought. His uncapped counterpart Oscar Steene has been particularly impressive at state level this year, and is beginning to prove himself as a genuine AFL player in years to come as he seeks another contract.

Key forward Brody Mihocek remains keen to continue playing at 32 years of age, however, understands a potential extension is unlikely to come before the back end of the year. Billy Frampton, Lachie Sullivan, Wil Parker and Charlie Dean are another out-of-contract quartet among the names who deserve to extend their careers into 2026 in the black and white, with the former recently sidelined with a moderate calf strain. West Australian Ed Allan remains a watch, with foxfooty.com.au understanding rival interest continues to linger out of his home state. The Magpies already don’t have their first-round pick in this year’s draft, so it’s unlikely they’ll bring in any big fish this year via the trade period.

so take 5+ players in the draft? Given it seems expected we'll take our 3 NGAs/FS.

Smit could be our lock down defender hopefully.

I think there's a pretty realistic chance that Zac McCarthy's best AFL position might end up being in defense, despite him playing as a ruck/forward at the moment.

He's not really a big contested marker or the type to bash and crash in the ruck, but he does seem to have a lot of the athletic attributes that have made Darcy Moore a great key defender.

There's no issue with the development of his game, but a bit like Charlie Dean, I'm very skeptical about whether he'll ever develop the physical traits to perform his role consistently in the AFL.

That’s pretty similar to how I’d have worded it and like TRS I have queries over whether he’s got the tools to be an AFL footballer. Right now though he’s the ultimate tweeter, but it’s what that development can do over the next 12-18 months for his game.

That’s pretty similar to how I’d have worded it and like TRS I have queries over whether he’s got the tools to be an AFL footballer. Right now though he’s the ultimate tweeter, but it’s what that development can do over the next 12-18 months for his game.

I assume that was tweener - and yep - that's a tweener at VFL level. AFL tweeners are good at both roles in the VFL. I think he's significantly behind our no longer good enough AFL tweener - Cox - as both a ruck and a forward.

I was shocked when checking the other day that Xerri, the emerging rival to Gawn as the games best Ruckman is 26yo.
He was a very ordinary Ruck in his early 20’s, and my NM mates were concerned he’d never make it.

Steene who is more athletic, has time and he is improving week to week. With more bulk and strength he will be more than serviceable.

Smit is in a tough spot. Ideally you don’t want to carry 4 pure rucks and that 4th one has some positional scope about them. Throwing him behind the ball reads to me like a last shy at the stumps with McCarthy due to join post 2025.

The problem they both have currently though is that Cox is significantly better in both roles. It winds up with Cox at VFL level as our most productive ruck and our most productive ruck forward.

Tue future is then ultimately dependent on our contract plans for 2026 (assuming Cox retires). If we acquire a competent alternative to Cameron (let’s just say Liam Reidy) then Steene will be up against it and Smit no chance as a ruck without a swathe of injuries. Alternatively we could pluck one that’s the right age, but needs development which gives Steene a shot because he’d probably be the next man in with Cox gone.

My belief on the ruck depth chart for 2026 is something like this:

1. Cameron
2/3. Pro scout/ mature option and Steene
4. McCarthy

McCarthy is only 17, surely he'd be years off rucking in seniors?

If that's the case, I suspect he will get grabbed by someone in the draft.

For context Essendon are having a horrific run with their ruck injuries and have reached to their 4th just once. I think we’ve done it once this century (Begg in 2022). Even then in year 1 you’d probably find a way to use someone else be it Frampton or Howes.

I think it’d be unlikely that Smit would get a second chance in 2026 if we delisted him. He’s currently a very poor state league ruckman playing as a KPD which doesn’t exactly scream list spot to an acquiring club.

For context none of this is considering that we’ll have a clear line of sight on Condon’s future this time next year. If we don’t already (although I think we do).

Just looked at the video of best of Oscar Steene on the CFC website, all the highlights showed him taking marks and kicking goals. Nothing in the ruck.
Isn't it possible that they want Oscar to be a centre half forward?
