I was asking that same question to a mate of mine tonight regarding McStay. It was relating to, if he doesn't play any further part in this finals series, and we go onto play in a GF or even a preliminary final, would the club itself shop him around eventhough he has 2 years on a contract left. My mate thought that Melbourne ( need more marking forwards) or West Coast ( with Allen leaving) would snap him up. Could be interesting 🤔....
It’s been a failure and he ain’t getting any better all of a sudden.
Good thing is 650k is about standard now so the moneys not hurting us but I think we should cut ties personally.

If Cox retires, we need him even more. He’s at worst okay backup for ruck and defence as well as being one of our better options for a key forward. Not to mention, he probably has more years left in the legs than Brodie and Tim.

We would really appreciate another good KPF though.

I don't think it's been a failure really

He's the reason (or at least a major reason) we make the Grand Final in 2023.

He was injured for most of 22, a lot of 23, most of 24 and a decent chunk of 25. He just hasn't really had a great run at it. Lots of rotten luck.

Then, when he finally plays a decent amount of games in a season (2025), we throw him every which way and don't let him settle in a role which would be denting his confidence. I suspect he's also carrying something which probably makes it worse.

I wish we'd just play him as a pure key forward and allow him to show his strengths in that role. Even if it means dropping Mihocek for Cox to play the second ruck role. I reckon at anywhere near his best he gives us more than Checkers, even if Checkers is more consistent.

Hasn’t been a failure at all. He’s just horribly out of form. People seem to want players assassinated once their form drops

100%! McStay is a plus for the team. He's not a failure, nor is a trade-out candidate. He's out of form, apparently dealing with shoulder injury, but he'll work through it and come back stronger.

Can we please put a stop to this needlessly negative narrative?

It’s getting depressing the amount of shit we hang on our boys. I’m all for some tongue in check banter but the vitriol some of our lads cop is sad

I don't mind people having a different view on players. I don't think we should always shout down anyone who gives an opinion we don't agree with.

Particularly if they're not necessarily insulting the player being discussed.

As long as people get their points across in a reasonable and respectful manner it should be all good. It's when those who disagree immediately jump to snark and condescension as a reply that threads become a shit show

But you’ve gotta admit, and it only seems to come from us that when a player gets dropped once that means they’ll request a trade, is a really dumb scenario imo

It's probably an overreaction yeah

But I don't begrudge people who sometimes get carried away because in the vast majority of cases it's born from passion

I overreact all the time in game day threads and even at games.

I think the FA compensation formula needs to be altered drastically.

They cannot just base it on contract terms, they really should start factoring in the quality of the player leaving.

Could use the following metrics like : no of AA is the last 3-4 years, average finishing position in Clubs B&f (extra points for winning or finishing in the top 5), league honours, statistically ranking.

There is just no way in hell silvagni is worth a first rounder, even if he is a decent player.

Watched gettable last night, they went through 40 players and not one linked to us.
If Bobby goes home, a good result would be we lose him and pick 33, get pick 2 and Hutchinson.
Use pick 2 and future first to get Butters.
Any chance?

This was a curiosity to me also.
I thought a while back Gettable was stating we were heavily into a "big fish".

I wonder if this was clickbait, has fallen through, or is something still happening behind the scenes.

I think he definitely stays, but you never know with clubs and what their thinking list wise.
I like McStay in our side, but the McStay we saw in the 2023 finals before his injury, not the one we have seen the past 2 months.
You would think if Cox has a decent game tonight, he will be part of the final series going forward, which keeps McStay on the sidelines.
The problem for McStay is that the bar is set so low in terms of his performances, that Coxy only needs a half decent game to hold his place in the side....

"Big fish"...Its all clickbait, because these guys aren't stupid. They know as soon as they say the words, "Collingwood are getting a big fish this trade period" their viewership goes up x10.

are all these blokes any good? With a backline under fire as it has been in the last few weeks, the fact that Dean keeps getting a shot and not one of Ryan/TJ/Cochran etc have been sighted, tells me they aren’t. Is our VFL some sort of long term development squad? HDM, McRae are others who have been on the list for years but not gotten close. Might be a bit harsh though if some of these boys have been injured, but it’s frustrating to keep hearing these names but they are nowhere to be seen at AFL level
I reckon sometimes you just have to chuckle em in.
VFL is played on grounds with more exposed elements softer turf/less drainage so skills are not always on show.
