I'm not sure why Petracca would be wanting to leave now. Everyone he was upset with are no longer at the club. And he has a new coach.

I wouldn't want us to take on his mega contract.
Maybe being a big Collingwood fan growing up may influence him. Along with all the other perks of playing for a club like ours, compared to a minnow like Melbourne.

Petracca deal could get done relatively easily.

Something like:
  • Petracca for a F1, but Melbourne pay $600k p.a for next 4 years; or
  • Petracca for 2 X 2nd rounders, but Melbourne pay $200k p.a. for next 4 years

While I think we would have the cap space, I don't think we can afford (from a future list planning POV) to take on Petracca's full contract ($1.3-$1.4m/year for 4 years) unless he is willing to spread it over an extra year (e.g. if he is due $5.2m/4 years (average $1.3m), we would need to give him a bit extra ($5.5/5 years (average $1.1m).

Perfect (realistic) scenario would be for us to end up paying less than $900k p.a (Dees pay $400k-$500k p.a.). without giving up a first rounder, which likely means, the deal would be something like:

- Petracca for 2 x 2nd rounders + an ok young player (De Mattea/Parker/Allan).

30 next year, apparently still owed more than $5m for the next 4 years, haven't seen his best footy in 2 seasons now.... As much as I like him I'd be passing on Trac at this point I think.

Too much of a gamble in my eyes and I'd rather focus targeting a Butters or King in 2026

It seems that every time someone looks to leave a club, we go nuts trying to find a way to bring them in.
Also it seems that most of the players we want are not the "difference makers" we need.
Yet some are happy to give up valuable cap space, and or players to get them in.

Do we really have FOMO this badly?

I feel there are posters on our site who just want to be a part of trade time, just for the sake of it and don't look at the bigger picture.

We are on a flag tilt this year and next year, there are some actual "difference makers" available.

How about we cool our jets a little, take the FS and Academy picks this year and save our capital for something big in 2026.

I cant see us trading a good player just for trac.
Robbing peter to pay paul
I would not either BUT I am saying how a Possible Trade might/could get done

With trade season starting to “pre heat” in the oven it’s time to brace yourself for the following:

1. Post random twitter guy called “big bob” with trade news.
2. Post “just spread the contract” to afford a player. Make them play for free
3. Post “ delisted spud “ worth a look?
4. Post “ WhY aRE wE OnLY inTO spUDs WhEN gEEL and HAwkIes aRE aDDiNG StARS!”

The Melbourne football club is not playing big finals games. The Petracca I see is not the one from a few years ago. He seems to select when to go and frequently hesitates. When he was a beast he just went and created. Some of his disposal and decision making is just not where it was. The club would have better observations than mine.

Agree. Proven formula is to fill out the 23 with players who improve the standard of the whole team rather than adding star players, which we've been pretty good at doing.

Look at our bottom 6 vs most of the teams around the league. Parity across the team is the main reason why we're up and about.

A lot of fans from opposing clubs wonder why their clubs aren't challenging when they have elite talent in the top end (cough Carlton cough) but fail to see that their bottom 6 belong in the VFL.

That’s the have your cake and eat it too option. Statue to Leppa type of thing. I don’t see it. If he’s a little less certain he wants to leave, the new coach won’t want to start his career losing their second best player, Melbourne won’t accept garbage picks like 2 second rounders and on top of pay part of his salary. It’s full salary for that price because that’s the only benefit to Melbourne, they’ll get to pull a St Kilda and spend 95% of the cap for multiple years before a big splash.

We need a second banana to support Nick in midfield.

There is a chance to get him for a cut-price deal.

If we can get him back to near his best (and he wasn't bad this year) he would instantly become our second best player.

Also played all 23 games this year, despite a limited preseason and last years horrific injury.
